Arn Lands a Huge 42 Nominations As 2015 Acra Finalists Announced MEDIA RELEASE Sunday August 23, 2015 ARN LANDS A HUGE 42 NOMINATIONS AS 2015 ACRA FINALISTS ANNOUNCED Finalists for the 27th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards have been announced, with ARN earning a huge haul of 42 nominations across 25 prestigious categories. Two of ARN’s top on-air talent teams are again set to battle it out for honours in the prestigious Metropolitan Best On–Air category. Can Jonesy & Amanda at WS FM101.7 follow up last year’s victory and make it back to back wins in the coveted Metropolitan Best On-Air Team FM? Or will four-time winners and stablemates Kyle & Jackie O on KIIS 1065 take out the top honour? ARN received three nominations in the Best Producer category, with last year’s winner Laura Viglino again a finalist for her work on WS FM101.7’s Jonesy & Amanda show, along with Nic McClure for The Kyle & Jackie O Show, KIIS 1065 and Joe Gleeson for Scotty & Nige on 104.7 FM, Canberra (JV with SCA). ARN also has three nominations across two Best Newcomer categories with Mark ‘Soda’ Soderstrom on Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 nominated for Metro, and Adam Price on The Edge96.ONE and Katarina Slavich on Mix 106.3 Canberra (JV with SCA) nominated for the provincial category. Not only are there major ramifications for the rollout of the Rudd Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN), there are crucial flow-on issues for major media corporations such as the Seven Network and Consolidated Media Holdings, for advertisers, for internet service providers (ISPs), content creators, channel packagers and for regulators. And there are implications for the sale of the legacy free-to-air television spectrum in the ‘digital dividend’ as analog television is switched over to digital, and as the shakeout between traditional and new media continues. * Mogul Wars The second half of the year started dramatically (with headlines like “Raid launched on Consolidated Media”, Sydney Morning Herald, Business Day, Steffens, 9 July 2009, “Stokes share grab puts Packer in tight squeeze”, Australian Financial Review, Shoebridge and White, 10 July 2009, and “Seven takes stake in Cons Media to 19.91 percent”, AAP, 16 July 2009) when the papers began reporting that Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network had lifted its stake in James Packer’s Consolidated Media Holdings (CMH) to the maximum level allowed before launching a takeover.

With 506,000 listeners, or 13% market share, Nova 96.9 FM has Sydney’s second-largest commercial audience.     MEDIA RELEASE 14 October 2018 Performers, hosts & presenters announced for 30th annual Radio Awards Australian performers Conrad Sewell, Amy Shark, Vera Blue and Cyrus will headline the entertainment at the 30th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (the ACRAs) in Melbourne on Saturday. The artists will perform in front of 1,000 guests at radio’s night of nights, with satirical comedy stars Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen from The Chaser hosting the event for the third year in a row. Brisbane-born Sewell, who is now based in LA, has toured with Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5 and recently released the singles “Healing Hands” and “Come Clean” from his new album “Ghosts & Heartaches”. Sewell enjoyed major international success with his track “Firestone”, in collaboration with Kygo, going 10 times platinum in Australia, clocking up a million sales in the US and achieving platinum certification in Norway, UK, Germany and Sweden. Indie-pop star Amy Shark, nominated this week for nine awards at this year’s ARIA’s, best known for her 2016 single “Adore”, will also perform at the awards. Shark’s debut album “Love Monster” debuted at #1 on the ARIA chart and her single “I Said Hi” went to #1 on the Hot 100. She has performed on national television in the US with Jimmy Fallon and James Corden. ARIA and APRA nominated singer-songwriter Vera Blue will take to the stage for the first live performance of her forthcoming new single. For the second year running, Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold, hosts of NOVA’s number one national drive show, won the Best On-Air Team (Metro FM). Kate, Tim and Marty have been on air since January 2014 and have consistently been the number one national FM drive team. In front of more than 1000 industry peers, Ray Hadley and Amanda Keller were recognised for their outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry by being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Comedian, television producer and Amanda’s long-time friend, Andrew Denton, who recently underwent major heart surgery, made a surprise appearance on the night to present her with the Hall of Fame award. Amanda Keller, co-host of WSFM’s popular breakfast show, Jonesy and Amanda, is the first female on-air presenter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Available from: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2724515 Abstract This paper explores the implications of the militarisation of Australian history and the dilemmas of increasing public support for same-sex marriage in Australia at a time of renewed assaults on Indigenous rights, austerity measures and the silencing of dissent. The paper analyses the celebratory rhetoric which increasingly typifies both marriage equality campaigns and the commemoration of Australia’s First World War or ‘Anzac’ history in popular media and public debate. Against the confluence between ongoing debates on same-sex marriage and the ‘Anzac myth’, I highlight four key challenges: the silencing of dissent; forgetting of the Frontier Wars; untold stories of civil society achievements; and the normalising of same-sex rights. I argue that professed support for a liberal version of ‘gay rights’ exemplified by same-sex marriage, set against a militarized version of Australian history, glosses over past and ongoing injustices. A militarized version of history underpins a nationalism that misrepresents credit for advances in rights recognition, sidelining public representations of Indigenous sovereignties and the contributions of civil society, protest and social justice campaigning to the recognition and maintenance of civil and political rights.
