Global Media Journal - Australian Edition - Media Monitor Vol 3:2 2009 Australian Media Monitor 2009 3:2 Tim Dwyer * GMJ Vol. 3, Issue Two * Australian Media Monitor In this edition of AMM, I highlight some of the key developments in media industries, policy and regulation in the final half of 2009. There have been important changes in several industry sectors, and often we are seeing that these moves on the media monopoly board will ripple out and interconnect with other corporations, directorships, policies, content and access issues for audiences. The sweeping proposals for change to separate Telstra Corporation’s wholesale and retail businesses that emerged in the second half of the year, are a case in point. The potential consequences of this particular law and its related policy and regulatory frameworks intersect most vividly with content and access issues in the potential sale of Foxtel, arising from the Telstra restructuring. Not only are there major ramifications for the rollout of the Rudd Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN), there are crucial flow-on issues for major media corporations such as the Seven Network and Consolidated Media Holdings, for advertisers, for internet service providers (ISPs), content creators, channel packagers and for regulators. And there are implications for the sale of the legacy free-to-air television spectrum in the ‘digital dividend’ as analog television is switched over to digital, and as the shakeout between traditional and new media continues. * Mogul Wars The second half of the year started dramatically (with headlines like “Raid launched on Consolidated Media”, Sydney Morning Herald, Business Day, Steffens, 9 July 2009, “Stokes share grab puts Packer in tight squeeze”, Australian Financial Review, Shoebridge and White, 10 July 2009, and “Seven takes stake in Cons Media to 19.91 percent”, AAP, 16 July 2009) when the papers began reporting that Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network had lifted its stake in James Packer’s Consolidated Media Holdings (CMH) to the maximum level allowed before launching a takeover. -

Monday 20 January promises to be a massive day for Sydney breakfast radio. For those who’ve been living in a cave in Outer Mongolia (or outside Sydney, as the case may be!), that’s the date long-time 2Day FM breakfast DJs Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O start their new show at rival station Mix106.5 FM. It’s also the date Mix106.5 FM will be rebranded as KIIS FM. So will these major changes have the desired effect for Mix, boosting both their audience and advertising revenue? Roy Morgan investigates… The total Sydney radio market comprises almost 3.9 million people. According to data from Roy Morgan Research, market leader 2Day’s total audience comprises 15% of this (568,000 people), well ahead of Mix106.5’s 10% market share (393,000 people). With 506,000 listeners, or 13% market share, Nova 96.9 FM has Sydney’s second-largest commercial audience. Battle of the breakfasters Breakfast (5.30–9am) is traditionally one of commercial radio’s most competitive timeslots, and has been dominated in Sydney by Southern Cross Austereo-owned 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show for years. Dave Thornton Stand Up Comedian / Presenter / Broadcaster Dave Thornton has built a global reputation for his honest, engaging, whip-smart and damn funny comedy. His solo stand-up debut performance at the 2007 Melbourne International Comedy Festival garnered a nomination for ‘Best Newcomer’ for his show Euromission and he has returned to the Comedy Festival each year since, his most recent 2019 show Lean Into It was a smash hit both in Melbourne and around the country. Dave’s TV credentials include hosting a series of Channel 9’s 20 to 1, appearances ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks and Agony Uncles, Network Ten’s Hughesy We Have a Problem and regularly appearing as a fill-in host on The Project. Posen Commons The Military Foundation of U.S. Hegemony Since the end of the Cold War, scholars, commentators, and practitioners of foreign policy have de- bated what structure of world power would follow the bipolar U.S.-Soviet competition, and what U.S. foreign policy would replace containment. Those who hypothesized a long “unipolar moment” of extraordinary U.S. relative power have proven more prescient than those who expected the relatively quick emergence of a multipolar world.1 Those who recommended a policy of “primacy”—essentially hegemony—to consolidate, exploit, and expand the U.S. relative advantage have carried the day against those who argued for a more restrained U.S. foreign policy.2 One can argue that the jury is still out, the Barry R. Posen is Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of its Security Studies Program. During the past academic year, he was a Transatlantic Fellow of the Ger- man Marshall Fund of the United States.
