Global Media Journal - Australian Edition - Media Monitor Vol 3:2 2009
Global Media Journal - Australian Edition - Media Monitor Vol 3:2 2009 Australian Media Monitor 2009 3:2 Tim Dwyer * GMJ Vol. 3, Issue Two * Australian Media Monitor In this edition of AMM, I highlight some of the key developments in media industries, policy and regulation in the final half of 2009. There have been important changes in several industry sectors, and often we are seeing that these moves on the media monopoly board will ripple out and interconnect with other corporations, directorships, policies, content and access issues for audiences. The sweeping proposals for change to separate Telstra Corporation’s wholesale and retail businesses that emerged in the second half of the year, are a case in point. The potential consequences of this particular law and its related policy and regulatory frameworks intersect most vividly with content and access issues in the potential sale of Foxtel, arising from the Telstra restructuring. Not only are there major ramifications for the rollout of the Rudd Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN), there are crucial flow-on issues for major media corporations such as the Seven Network and Consolidated Media Holdings, for advertisers, for internet service providers (ISPs), content creators, channel packagers and for regulators. And there are implications for the sale of the legacy free-to-air television spectrum in the ‘digital dividend’ as analog television is switched over to digital, and as the shakeout between traditional and new media continues. * Mogul Wars The second half of the year started dramatically (with headlines like “Raid launched on Consolidated Media”, Sydney Morning Herald, Business Day, Steffens, 9 July 2009, “Stokes share grab puts Packer in tight squeeze”, Australian Financial Review, Shoebridge and White, 10 July 2009, and “Seven takes stake in Cons Media to 19.91 percent”, AAP, 16 July 2009) when the papers began reporting that Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network had lifted its stake in James Packer’s Consolidated Media Holdings (CMH) to the maximum level allowed before launching a takeover. -

October 2008 Comedy Channel Highlights
www.comedychannel.com.au OCTOBER 2008 HIGHLIGHTS THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW WORLD PREMIERE Thursday October 2 @ 8.30pm Continues Thursdays at 8.30pm Merrick and Rosso are back on the box where they belong, with the keys to the Foxtel car - and enough fuel in the tank to really cause some chaos! They’ll finally return to their broadcasting birth place at The Comedy Channel with THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW. So what’s on the cards for the new show? Each week the boys will front up before a live studio audience with their unique take on anything and everything. From what’s happening in the world of news to the big questions: Can you deep fry a watermelon? On THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW, celebrities will make regular guest appearances from in-studio interviews to recorded comedy pieces to show you a side of them never before seen. Into the mix will go plenty of studio audience interaction and more mayhem and stupidity than is legal in three states. For perhaps the first time, Merrick Watts and Tim Ross will truly focus the energy and excitement of their legendary sell-out live comedy shows and bring that force to the electric television. It’s hotter than Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen, is sure to top Brendan Nelson’s approval ratings and it’s ‘wronger’ than an Austrian family get-together. THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW will allow nobody to be immune from their parodies and sketch comedy. Finally, as Merrick and Rosso are keen to point out, “Put simply, the show is Morcambe and Wise meets The Star Wars Christmas Special at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting during The French Renaissance… on a weeknight.” Buckle up Australia, for a riotous half hour of THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW. -
THE Hospital Where a Nurse Apparently Killed Herself After Falling Victim of an Aussie Radio Show's Prank Call Have Condemning the Stunt As “Truly Appalling"
News The Sun 8 December 2012 Kate hospital condemns ‘truly appalling’ radio hoax after death of nurse THE hospital where a nurse apparently killed herself after falling victim of an Aussie radio show's prank call have condemning the stunt as “truly appalling". King Edward VII’s Hospital, which was treating Prince William's wife Kate for acute morning sickness, wrote to the chairman of Southern Cross Austereo to protest “in the strongest possible terms” against the “extremely foolish” hoax. Tragic Jacintha Saldanha, who was duped into thinking she was speaking to the Queen, was found dead yesterday two days after the crank call by 2Day FM DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian. Hospital chairman Lord Glenarthur said her death was "tragic beyond words", adding that the station had "humiliated" the unsuspecting nurse. He wrote: “I appreciate that you cannot undo the damage which has been done but I would urge you to take steps to ensure that such an incident could never be repeated." A spokesman for the private London hospital said the letter was sent earlier today. The letter comes after major advertisers began deserting 2Day FM amid public outrage and Australia's media regulator prepared to launch a probe into its conduct. Leading supermarket Coles - the country’s second largest chain - was the first to drop the Sydney- based station following Jacintha's death, which is leading news headlines in Australia. Coles was followed swiftly by Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company, which announced it was pulling all advertising from 2Day FM. CHAIRMAN of King Edward VII's Hospital said he wanted to "protest" against the "extremely foolish" gag And Optus, Telstra's main competitor, said it is reviewing its position. -
