October 2008 Comedy Channel Highlights
www.comedychannel.com.au OCTOBER 2008 HIGHLIGHTS THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW WORLD PREMIERE Thursday October 2 @ 8.30pm Continues Thursdays at 8.30pm Merrick and Rosso are back on the box where they belong, with the keys to the Foxtel car - and enough fuel in the tank to really cause some chaos! They’ll finally return to their broadcasting birth place at The Comedy Channel with THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW. So what’s on the cards for the new show? Each week the boys will front up before a live studio audience with their unique take on anything and everything. From what’s happening in the world of news to the big questions: Can you deep fry a watermelon? On THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW, celebrities will make regular guest appearances from in-studio interviews to recorded comedy pieces to show you a side of them never before seen. Into the mix will go plenty of studio audience interaction and more mayhem and stupidity than is legal in three states. For perhaps the first time, Merrick Watts and Tim Ross will truly focus the energy and excitement of their legendary sell-out live comedy shows and bring that force to the electric television. It’s hotter than Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen, is sure to top Brendan Nelson’s approval ratings and it’s ‘wronger’ than an Austrian family get-together. THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW will allow nobody to be immune from their parodies and sketch comedy. Finally, as Merrick and Rosso are keen to point out, “Put simply, the show is Morcambe and Wise meets The Star Wars Christmas Special at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting during The French Renaissance… on a weeknight.” Buckle up Australia, for a riotous half hour of THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW. -

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S. -

Will Kyle and Jackie O Give Mix106.5 the KIIS of Life?
Article No. 5379 Available on www.roymorgan.com Link to Roy Morgan Profiles Thursday, 16 January 2014 Will Kyle and Jackie O give Mix106.5 the KIIS of life? Monday 20 January promises to be a massive day for Sydney breakfast radio. For those who’ve been living in a cave in Outer Mongolia (or outside Sydney, as the case may be!), that’s the date long-time 2Day FM breakfast DJs Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O start their new show at rival station Mix106.5 FM. It’s also the date Mix106.5 FM will be rebranded as KIIS FM. So will these major changes have the desired effect for Mix, boosting both their audience and advertising revenue? Roy Morgan investigates… The total Sydney radio market comprises almost 3.9 million people. According to data from Roy Morgan Research, market leader 2Day’s total audience comprises 15% of this (568,000 people), well ahead of Mix106.5’s 10% market share (393,000 people). With 506,000 listeners, or 13% market share, Nova 96.9 FM has Sydney’s second-largest commercial audience. Battle of the breakfasters Breakfast (5.30–9am) is traditionally one of commercial radio’s most competitive timeslots, and has been dominated in Sydney by Southern Cross Austereo-owned 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show for years. In the 12 months to September 2013, 349,000 Sydneysiders (or 9% of the city’s total radio market) listened to the show at least once in any given seven-day period. 2Day, Mix106.5 and Nova 96.9: total vs breakfast audience numbers 600 568 506 IMMEDIATE RELEASE 500 393 400 FOR 349 300 262 Audience ('000) 206 200 100 0 2Day FM Mix 106.5 Nova 96.9 Total Audience Breakfast Show Audience Source: Roy Morgan Single Source (Australia), October 2012-September 2013 (n = 10,135). -

The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21St Century Stand-Up
The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage © 2018 Rachel Eliza Blackburn M.F.A., Virginia Commonwealth University, 2013 B.A., Webster University Conservatory of Theatre Arts, 2005 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Theatre and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness. -
