Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. He was also a serious jazz enthusiast and collector. Tolley has graciously bequeathed his entire collection of jazz records to Carleton University for faculty and students to appreciate and enjoy. The recordings represent 75 years of collecting, spanning the earliest jazz recordings to albums released in the 1970s. Born in Birmingham, England in 1927, his love for jazz began at the age of fourteen and from the age of seventeen he was publishing in many leading periodicals on the subject, such as Discography, Pickup, Jazz Monthly, The IAJRC Journal and Canada’s popular jazz magazine Coda. As well as having written various books on British poetry, he has also written two books on jazz: Discographical Essays (2009) and Codas: To a Life with Jazz (2013). Tolley was also president of the Montreal Vintage Music Society which also included Jacques Emond, whose vinyl collection is also housed in the Audio-Visual Resource Centre.

Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

    MERRICK WATTS Comedian/Presenter/Broadcaster Merrick first came to Australia’s attention as one half of Merrick and Rosso, as part of the Triple J Drive show with Tim Ross. In 2000 they were the first voices on the NOVA network, launching a new radio brand and coming first in Australia’s toughest radio market – Sydney Breakfast. Merrick and Rosso built a cult fan base with sold out live shows across Australia and TV series’ on Ten, Nine and the Comedy Channel. Over the last few years Merrick has branched out from the double act, demonstrating his versatility as both an actor and comedian. Most notably, Merrick showed his acting chops with roles in Underbelly – The Tale of Two Cities, and Working Dog’s Logie Award winning comedy/drama satire, The Hollowmen on ABC TV. After more than 10 years broadcasting his award winning breakfast radio show on Nova 969, Merrick made the switch to Drive with Triple M hosting the very successful Merrick Watts and the Highway Patrol, which broadcast nationally in 2012 and 2013. Amongst all this, there have been numerous guest appearances in shows for all the major networks, including Thank God You Are Here, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, The Spearman Experiment, Thanks for Listening – The History of Radio, Rove Live, Burke’s Backyard, All Saints, Harry’s Practice, and Bert’s Family Feud. And more recently, Backseat Drivers, The Unbelievable Truth, Mr and Mrs Murder and Have You Been Paying Attention. In 2013, Merrick became a regular face again on our TV Screens, as host of the ABC comedy quiz show Tractor Monkeys.

She has performed on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, Totally Biased with W.Kamau Bell, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Lopez Tonight and Last Comic Standing. She has appeared in Key and Peele and @Midnight. Michelle is a series regular on VH1’s Best Week Ever, MTV’s Walk of Shame, Oxygen Network’s Kiss and Tell, and was Jenny McCarthy’s sidekick on her late-night talk show Jenny. Craig Todaro (One Year Program alum) Craig performed in American Comedy Institute’s 25th Anniversary Show where he was selected by Gotham Comedy Club owner Chris Mazzilli to appear on Gotham Comedy Live. Craig is now a pro regular at Gotham Comedy Club where he recently appeared in Gotham Comedy All Stars. Yannis Pappas (One Year Program alum) Yannis recently appeared in his first Comedy Central Half Hour special. He has been featured on Gotham Comedy Live, VH1's Best Week Ever and CBS. He is currently the co-anchor of Fusion Live, a one-hour news magazine program on Fusion Network, which focuses on current events, pop culture and satire. He tours the world doing stand up comedy and is known for his immensely popular characters Mr. Panos and Maurica. Along with Director Jesse Scaturro, he is the co-founder of the comedy production company Ditch Films. Jessica Kirson is a touring national headliner. She recently made her film debut in Nick Cannon’s Cliques with Jim Breuer and George Lopez.
