MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 26 November 2019 BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2020 Brisbane Comedy Festival enters its second big decade in 2020, playing in more venues, welcoming more international stars, promoting more local talent and bringing more laughs than ever before. A highlight of the international comedy calendar, Brisbane Comedy Festival 2020 returns for its 11th year with a bumper line-up of 85 acts playing in 14 performance spaces across five Brisbane venues from 21 February to 22 March, 2020. Brisbane Powerhouse is comedy central, hosting performances and gigs across its iconic New Farm space – from its rooftop to its storeroom – with Brisbane City Hall and Newstead Brewing Co again throwing open their doors to entertainers. Joining the fold for the first time are two new Fortitude Valley venues: the old-world charm of The Tivoli and the shiny newness of Fortitude Music Hall. The month-long festival of fun and frivolity begins with the popular Brisbane Comedy Festival Opening Gala, hosted by a soon-to-be-revealed act who will attempt to corral the comedic chaos of more than 9 comedians at Brisbane City Hall on Friday 21 February. The festival again shines the spotlight on top Queensland talent including Mel Buttle, Steph Tisdell, Becky Lucas and Matt Okine; local collectives Act/React, Brisburned and Politics in the Pub; and the dazzling return of a ‘90s icon – Agro with Jamie Dunn. Grin, giggle and guffaw with a slate of national comedy heavyweights such as Dave Hughes, Peter Helliar, Fiona O’Loughlin, Nazeem Hussein, Frank Woodley, Sammy J and the duo we never knew we needed: Paul McDermott and Steven Gates. -

To the best of my knowledge and belief, this dissertation contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the dissertation itself. Abstract This thesis contains a detailed academic analysis of the complete rise and fall of Christopher Skase and his Qintex group mirage. It uses David Harvey’s ‘Condition of Postmodernity’ to locate the collapse within the Australian political economic context of the period (1974-1989). It does so in order to answer questions about why and how the mirage developed, why and how it failed, and why Skase became the scapegoat for the Australian corporate excesses of the 1980s. I take a multi-disciplinary approach and consider corporate collapse, corporate regulation and the role of accounting, and corporate deviance. Cast Biographies RILEY KEOUGH (Christine Reade) Riley Keough, 26, is one of Hollywood’s rising stars. At the age of 12, she appeared in her first campaign for Tommy Hilfiger and at the age of 15 she ignited a media firestorm when she walked the runway for Christian Dior. From a young age, Riley wanted to explore her talents within the film industry, and by the age of 19 she dedicated herself to developing her acting craft for the camera. In 2010, she made her big-screen debut as Marie Currie in The Runaways starring opposite Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. People took notice; shortly thereafter, she starred alongside Orlando Bloom in The Good Doctor, directed by Lance Daly. Riley’s memorable work in the film, which premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2010, earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Milan International Film Festival in 2012. Riley’s talents landed her a title-lead as Jack in Bradley Rust Gray’s werewolf flick Jack and Diane. She also appeared alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which grossed nearly $167 million worldwide. Further in 2011, she completed work on director Nick Cassavetes’ film Yellow, starring alongside Sienna Miller, Melanie Griffith and Ray Liota, as well as the Xan Cassavetes film Kiss of the Damned. As her camera talent evolves alongside her creative growth, so do the roles she is meant to play. Recently, she was the lead in the highly-anticipated fourth installment of director George Miller’s cult- classic Mad Max - Mad Max: Fury Road alongside a distinguished cast comprising of Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz and Nick Hoult. -
Commercial Radio Awards (Acras), Announced This Evening at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane
MEDIA RELEASE 19 October 2019 Jonesy & Amanda win Best On-Air Team FM at Radio Awards Successful WSFM breakfast hosts Jonesy and Amanda (Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller), have been crowned Best On- Air Team (Metro FM category) at the 31st Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs), announced this evening at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane. The win caps off a great year for the much-loved duo, who have notched up 14 years on air together and previously won the coveted award in 2012 and 2014. 2GB’s drive time host Ben Fordham won Best Talk Presenter for the fifth time and 2GB morning presenter Ray Hadley was awarded Best Current Affairs Presenter, bringing his career tally of ACRAs to 33 across all categories. The Best On-Air Team (Metro AM) was won by Afternoons with Erin Molan & Natalie Peters, the first female duo to host a news/talk show on 2GB and the first all-female team to win this award in ACRAs history. NOVA’s popular drive show Kate, Tim & Marty won Best Networked Program and Best Syndicated Australian Program. Best Entertainment Presenter went to Triple M funny man Lawrence Mooney, while Rebecca Morse, half of Hit107 Adelaide’s new breakfast duo Bec & Cosi, won Best Newcomer On-Air. MEDIA RELEASE 20 AUGUST 2017 Digital radio finalists announced for 2017 Radio Awards The finalists in the 29th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) were announced today and Coles Radio (NOVA Entertainment), Buddha Radio (Southern Cross Austereo), Oldskool (Southern Cross Austereo) and Elf Radio (Australian Radio Network) are in the running for the Best Digital Radio Format award. The biggest names in radio will battle it out for the hotly contested Best On Air Team in both the AM and FM (Metro) categories. A less obvious antecedent that The Simpsons benefitted directly and indirectly from was Hanna-Barbera’s Wait ‘til Your Father Gets Home (NBC 1972–1974). This was an attempt to exploit the ratings successes of Norman Lear’s stable of grittier 1970s’ US sitcoms, but as a stepping stone it is entirely noteworthy through its prioritisation of the suburban narrative over the fantastical (i.e., shows like The Flintstones , The Jetsons et al.). 2 . Nelvana was renowned for producing well-regarded production-line chil- dren’s animation throughout the 1980s. It was extended from the 1960s studio Laff-Arts, and formed in 1971 by Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert and Clive Smith. Its success was built on a portfolio of highly commercial TV animated work that did not conform to a ‘house-style’ and allowed for more creative practice in television and feature projects (Mazurkewich, 1999, pp. 104–115). 3 . The NBC US version recast Feeble with the voice of The Simpsons regular Hank Azaria, and the emphasis shifted to an American living in England. The show was pulled off the schedules after only three episodes for failing to connect with audiences (Bermam, 1999, para 3). 4 . MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed October 13, 2012 11.30pm local state time O October 15 Respected radio executive Graham15 October 20Mott11 inducted into Hall of Fame One of radio’s most respected and well-liked executives, Graham Mott, has been inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame at the 2012 Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). Graham was honoured for his outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry at a gala ceremony, attended by 1300 of his industry peers at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Sydney. Most recently General Manager of Fairfax Radio Network, Graham began his radio career as a talk radio panel operator at 2GB in 1969. He went on to hold many positions at talk and music stations over the next 42 years including program producer, production manager, operations manager, music director, program director and general manager. He worked at a variety of radio stations including 2SM, 2GB, 3AW, 2WS and 2UW.. Graham was also a Commercial Radio Australia Board member for many years as well as Chairing the industry Research Committee at various times. Married with four children, Graham and his wife live in Melbourne. Graham was honoured by some of the industry’s biggest names at tonight’s ACRAS including Neil Mitchell, Derryn Hinch and Ross Stevenson. Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer, Joan Warner said: “Graham Mott has been a staunch supporter of commercial radio for many years and has contributed greatly to its growth and development on many levels.” The Hall of Fame recipients are nominated by industry peers and are selected by a high level judging committee. -

Monday 20 January promises to be a massive day for Sydney breakfast radio. For those who’ve been living in a cave in Outer Mongolia (or outside Sydney, as the case may be!), that’s the date long-time 2Day FM breakfast DJs Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O start their new show at rival station Mix106.5 FM. It’s also the date Mix106.5 FM will be rebranded as KIIS FM. So will these major changes have the desired effect for Mix, boosting both their audience and advertising revenue? Roy Morgan investigates… The total Sydney radio market comprises almost 3.9 million people. According to data from Roy Morgan Research, market leader 2Day’s total audience comprises 15% of this (568,000 people), well ahead of Mix106.5’s 10% market share (393,000 people). With 506,000 listeners, or 13% market share, Nova 96.9 FM has Sydney’s second-largest commercial audience. Battle of the breakfasters Breakfast (5.30–9am) is traditionally one of commercial radio’s most competitive timeslots, and has been dominated in Sydney by Southern Cross Austereo-owned 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show for years. This article examines the relationship between genre-mixing and cultural commentary in four documentary series produced for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that centre on established comedians. These series are Lawrence Leung’s Choose Your Own Adventure (2009), Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey (2011), Judith Lucy is All Woman (2015) and Luke Warm Sex (2016). Each series combines the documentary and comedy genres by centring on a comedian’s investigation of a theme such as spirituality, gender or sex. While appearing alongside news satire, these docucomedies depart from the latter by eschewing politics in favour of existential themes. Embracing conventions of personalized documentaries, these series use performance reflexively to draw attention to therapeutic discourses and awkward situations. Giving expression to uncertain and questioning views of contemporary spirituality, gender and mediated intimacies, the docucomedies of Lawrence Leung, Judith Lucy and Luke McGregor stage interventions in contemporary debates that constitute forms of public pedagogy. Documentary comedy These series can be identified as documentary comedies, or docucomedies, which combine humour and non-fiction representation without adhering primarily to either genre. Although the relationship between comedy and factual screen works has received little sustained attention, notes Paul Ward, a program can combine both genres (2005, 67, 78–9). -

ZOOS VICTORIA’S SUBMISSION TO SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY AFFAIRS Inquiry into the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labeling Laws) Bill 2009 FROM THE COMEDIANS OF AUSTRALIA Thank you for considering this submission on the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labeling Laws) Bill 2009. We want to know whether the food we buy is fuelling an environmental crisis in South East Asia. Australia’s food labeling laws are preventing us from making an informed choice, but shouldn’t every single Australian have the right to know what is in our food? Here’s what we do know: that loss of virgin rainforest to make way for the production of palm oil accounts for the death of more than 50 orang-utans a week. 1 Rainforest is destroyed at a rate equivalent to 300 soccer fields every hour to make way for palm oil plantations. 2 The destruction is only going to get worse. By 2020, Indonesia’s oil palm plantations are projected to triple in size to 16.5 million hectares – an area the size of England and Wales combined.3 And we have absolutely no idea if we are contributing to this environmental crisis, because it’s not compulsory to label palm oil in our food products. We are prepared to send a delegation to appear before the Senate Committee on Community Affairs.
