Digital Radio Sales MEDIA RELEASE 2 October 2019 Digital prophet David Shing and Kyle & Jackie O at Radio Alive 2019 New York-based digital prophet David “Shingy” Shing will feature with radio stars Kyle Sandilands and Jackie “O” Henderson at the Radio Alive 2019 national radio conference, with the full program released today. Australian-born Shing is one of the most recognised and colourful figures on the US speaking circuit, having spent more than a decade at Verizon Media, which includes AOL, Yahoo, HuffPost and other media properties, before departing in August. Forbes described Shing as an artist and “storyteller who identifies emerging trends and inspires clients to think differently”. KIIS FM breakfast duo Kyle and Jackie O, who have spent nearly 20 years on air together, will make a special appearance to talk about their careers, the stars they’ve interviewed, their partnership and how they keep the show at the top of the FM airwaves. The full conference program also features a panel of leading female executive producers hosted by the Head of the Hit Network at Southern Cross Austereo, Gemma Fordham. The panel includes Sacha French, EP of the Hughesy & Kate Show; Nic McClure, EP of Nova’s national drive show Kate, Tim & Marty; and Millie Michael, EP of the Jonesy & Amanda breakfast show on WSFM. The panel will explore the elements that go into creating must-listen to radio. They join previously announced speakers Hedley Thomas, producer of the Teacher’s Pet podcast, as well as radio CEOs Grant Blackley (Southern Cross Austereo), Ciaran Davis (ARN), Cathy O’Connor (NOVA Entertainment) and Adam Lang (Macquarie Media). More than 500 radio and media executives from around Australia will gather in Brisbane for the annual radio conference on Friday, 18 October, followed by the gala 31st Australian Commercial Radio Awards on Saturday, 19 October. “We’re delighted to have such a strong line-up for the conference and we look forward to a big two days for radio,” said Joan Warner, chief executive officer of industry body Commercial Radio Australia. Radio Alive 2019 will be held at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane. Global Media Journal - Australian Edition - Media Monitor Vol 3:2 2009 Australian Media Monitor 2009 3:2 Tim Dwyer * GMJ Vol. 3, Issue Two * Australian Media Monitor In this edition of AMM, I highlight some of the key developments in media industries, policy and regulation in the final half of 2009. There have been important changes in several industry sectors, and often we are seeing that these moves on the media monopoly board will ripple out and interconnect with other corporations, directorships, policies, content and access issues for audiences. The sweeping proposals for change to separate Telstra Corporation’s wholesale and retail businesses that emerged in the second half of the year, are a case in point. The potential consequences of this particular law and its related policy and regulatory frameworks intersect most vividly with content and access issues in the potential sale of Foxtel, arising from the Telstra restructuring. Not only are there major ramifications for the rollout of the Rudd Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN), there are crucial flow-on issues for major media corporations such as the Seven Network and Consolidated Media Holdings, for advertisers, for internet service providers (ISPs), content creators, channel packagers and for regulators. And there are implications for the sale of the legacy free-to-air television spectrum in the ‘digital dividend’ as analog television is switched over to digital, and as the shakeout between traditional and new media continues. * Mogul Wars The second half of the year started dramatically (with headlines like “Raid launched on Consolidated Media”, Sydney Morning Herald, Business Day, Steffens, 9 July 2009, “Stokes share grab puts Packer in tight squeeze”, Australian Financial Review, Shoebridge and White, 10 July 2009, and “Seven takes stake in Cons Media to 19.91 percent”, AAP, 16 July 2009) when the papers began reporting that Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network had lifted its stake in James Packer’s Consolidated Media Holdings (CMH) to the maximum level allowed before launching a takeover.

  • Will Kyle and Jackie O Give Mix106.5 the KIIS of Life?
Article No. 5379 Available on www.roymorgan.com Link to Roy Morgan Profiles Thursday, 16 January 2014 Will Kyle and Jackie O give Mix106.5 the KIIS of life? Monday 20 January promises to be a massive day for Sydney breakfast radio. For those who’ve been living in a cave in Outer Mongolia (or outside Sydney, as the case may be!), that’s the date long-time 2Day FM breakfast DJs Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O start their new show at rival station Mix106.5 FM. It’s also the date Mix106.5 FM will be rebranded as KIIS FM. So will these major changes have the desired effect for Mix, boosting both their audience and advertising revenue? Roy Morgan investigates… The total Sydney radio market comprises almost 3.9 million people. According to data from Roy Morgan Research, market leader 2Day’s total audience comprises 15% of this (568,000 people), well ahead of Mix106.5’s 10% market share (393,000 people). With 506,000 listeners, or 13% market share, Nova 96.9 FM has Sydney’s second-largest commercial audience. Battle of the breakfasters Breakfast (5.30–9am) is traditionally one of commercial radio’s most competitive timeslots, and has been dominated in Sydney by Southern Cross Austereo-owned 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show for years. In the 12 months to September 2013, 349,000 Sydneysiders (or 9% of the city’s total radio market) listened to the show at least once in any given seven-day period. 2Day, Mix106.5 and Nova 96.9: total vs breakfast audience numbers 600 568 506 IMMEDIATE RELEASE 500 393 400 FOR 349 300 262 Audience ('000) 206 200 100 0 2Day FM Mix 106.5 Nova 96.9 Total Audience Breakfast Show Audience Source: Roy Morgan Single Source (Australia), October 2012-September 2013 (n = 10,135).

  • Pinkwashing the Past: Gay Rights, Military History and the Sidelining of Protest in Australia
Oñati Socio-legal Series, v. 6, n. 1 (2016) – Inequality and Austerity after the Global Financial Crisis: Law, Gender and Sexuality ISSN: 2079-5971 Pinkwashing the Past: Gay Rights, Military History and the Sidelining of Protest in Australia ∗ TANJA DREHER Dreher, T., 2016. Pinkwashing the Past: Gay Rights, Military History and the Sidelining of Protest in Australia. Oñati Socio-legal Series [online], 6 (1), 116-136. Available from: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2724515 Abstract This paper explores the implications of the militarisation of Australian history and the dilemmas of increasing public support for same-sex marriage in Australia at a time of renewed assaults on Indigenous rights, austerity measures and the silencing of dissent. The paper analyses the celebratory rhetoric which increasingly typifies both marriage equality campaigns and the commemoration of Australia’s First World War or ‘Anzac’ history in popular media and public debate. Against the confluence between ongoing debates on same-sex marriage and the ‘Anzac myth’, I highlight four key challenges: the silencing of dissent; forgetting of the Frontier Wars; untold stories of civil society achievements; and the normalising of same-sex rights. I argue that professed support for a liberal version of ‘gay rights’ exemplified by same-sex marriage, set against a militarized version of Australian history, glosses over past and ongoing injustices. A militarized version of history underpins a nationalism that misrepresents credit for advances in rights recognition, sidelining public representations of Indigenous sovereignties and the contributions of civil society, protest and social justice campaigning to the recognition and maintenance of civil and political rights.

  • Performance Paradigm 7 (July 2011) 1 Are We So Happy That We've Lost All of the 'Tragic Spectators'? [1] Helena Grehan
Performance Paradigm 7 (July 2011) Are we so happy that we’ve lost all of the ‘tragic spectators’? [1] Helena Grehan Martha Nussbaum argues that to develop or engender a culture of ‘respectful compassion’ we need to take care to instil an ‘education in common human weakness and vulnerability’ in every child. She maintains that childhood should be a space in which children ‘learn to be tragic spectators and to understand with subtlety and responsiveness the predicaments to which human life is prone’ (2003: 24). Taking Nussbaum’s argument as a point of departure I want to explore in this paper whether the desire to develop, engender or indeed participate in this kind of culture still holds relevance in the current highly technologised western world. Do we still care about ‘common weakness and vulnerability’ or has our ability to respond to the pain and suffering of others become compromised by the fact that we are continually bombarded with information and that the moral frameworks of old (of say religion, or a coherent government perhaps) no longer hold as steadfastly as they once did for many western subjects? And given the focus on consumption and exchange that operates in this society of individuals, is it our level of participation in this economy that denotes our level of happiness? This paper draws on the example of a radio chat show competition (aired on 2Day FM and online on July 17 2009), in which the drama hinged on the deliberate humiliation of its contestants. I reflect on whether viewers of the online streaming and listeners to the show might feel that compassion, or indeed any empathic response, is owed to the competition’s participants.
