The Catedral “San Ildefonso” located in the main square, and was built with the stones of the original city. DZIBILCHALTUN & PROGRESO Dzibilchaltun “The Place of Writings on Stone” is a Mayan city located only 15 kilometers from Merida. Dzibilchaltun is one of the most impressive astronomical Mayan center where you will also see an underground river (cenote). We will visit the museum, the typical Mayan house, walk along the ecological path, lined with all the trees from the region, as well as the pyramids. The Temple of the Seven Dolls stands out from the rest, this is where each year on March 21 st the equinox gives a show; finally we will visit the natural well Xlacah. Our next stop will be to in the seaport of Progreso to enjoy the beautiful beaches and cooling breezes off the Gulf of Mexico, which are great for swimming. IZAMAL “The city of the hills” located just in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula could be the most ancient colonial city and also it is known as the “City of Three Cultures”, Izamal brings together elements of the pre­Hispanic, colonial and contemporary eras, where we can find five pyramids, the main of them is Kinich Kakmo, there are other buildings as the Rabit, Kabul and Itzamatul. Izamal is considered a colonial jewel because all the buildings are painted with the yellow color and its main attractive is the convent that was built over the Mayan pyramids using the stones of them for its construction. Asimismo, denominamos Puuc al área arqueológica comprendida en esta serranía, la cual incluye decenas de espectaculares sitios arqueológicos que, a su vez, pueden dividirse en dos sectores principales: este y oeste (Figura 2). El primero y más famoso en términos generales, abarca desde Uxmal al norte hasta Ichpich al sur, mientras que el segundo, más destruido y menos conocido, cubre desde Oxkintok en Yucatán hasta Yakal Chuc en Campeche, siendo en este sector donde se encuentran los casos más antiguos conocidos en la región que se remontan al Clásico Temprano (Gendrop 1983:141). Por último, el término Puuc tiene una tercera lectura ya que es también el estilo arquitectónico que exhibe la mayoría de las construcciones de las ciudades Mayas concentradas en esta zona arqueológica. Publications by and about early explorers and scholars are listed in that section, even though they sometimes deal extensively with Puuc architecture. A Abrams, Elliot Marc How the Maya Built Their World: Energetics and Ancient Architecture. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1994. Based on a study of the residential architecture at Copán, the author attempts to demonstrate the usefulness of “architectural energetics” in understanding ancient civilizations. As the author writes: “By converting buildings into the energy and labor expended in their construction, a series of reconstructions concerning social power, labor organization, and economics can be generated.” Thus, the book includes 12 tables with titles such as “Operations, Tasks, and Costs per Task in Construction”, “Cumulative Energy Cost per Major Construction Episode”, and Hierarchic Social structure based on Residential Cost”. The few conclusions reached regarding the Maya at Copån do not seem to need the elaborate structure of the book. For example, the first conclusion states that “in addition to their greater symbolic value, improved 2 residential structures provided their occupants with an enhanced biopsychological quality of life, particularly in terms of health and comfort.

Box 361715, San Juan, PR 00936 USA ABSTRACT.—The status of manatees along the northern and western coasts of the Yucata´n Peninsula is poorly known. The objective of this study was to gather information about the distribution and abundance of manatees in this region. We interviewed local fishermen and authorities along the northern coast of the Peninsula in December 1999 and made three aerial surveys over the northern and western coasts of the Peninsula in March, August, and October 2000. Interviews suggest that manatee abundance was much higher in the past and that possible causes for population decline included hunting for local consumption and increased fishing, which entangled and frightened manatees. None of those interviewed had seen manatees in the last five years and we saw only one adult manatee. Manatee abundance along the northern and western coasts of the Yucata´n Peninsula is very low despite the presence of adequate habitat along the northern coast of Quintana Roo, from El Cuyo to Yalahau Lagoon; along the northern coast of Yucata´n, from Dzilam de Bravo to Rı´o Lagartos; along the western coast of the Peninsula, from Celestu´ n to Champoto´n; and in the Te´rminos Lagoon.
