FOREWORD

In The Brothers Karamazov Dostoevsky makes Alyosha tell the boys at Ilusha's stone that an important part of education is the acquisition of happy memories — that after the years men find themselves being kept good by memories of having been so. M We are older than Ilusha's schoolfellows. But men at college are fm not so old that they miss the disinterested affection, the spontaneous gaiety and the uncomplicated generosity which are the marks of youth. Someday it will be difficult to remember how we were gay and good with so few misgivings. This book is intended to be read on that someday. This book is a hard bound mnemonic for fine times and fine people. The Oaks 1960 makes no attempt to picture the intellectual labyrinth through which the student passes. We assume the effects of it but declare that a yearbook has little relation to it. The Oaks 1960 is a record for the future of what a pleasant place Saint Ambrose was in which to become a man. Some will say that this is to take education too lightly. To them the editors can say only that twenty-five years from now while they are reviewing their scruples, we shall be smiling at old times.

REV. WILLIAM F. LYNCH, PH.D. Professor of Biology Head of the Department of Biology and Geology Chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics At Saint Ambrose College since 1933.

Dr. Lynch achieves an eminence in his field and an excellence in his profession of which the Saint Ambrose community is largely unaware. And only those students in direct contact with Dr. Lynch know the dimension his personality adds to the notion of human sympathy. Natural reticence precludes his becoming a "campus character"; but perhaps no Saint Ambrose professor figures as importantly in the lives of his students as does Dr. Lynch. The Oaks 1960 is dedicated in the hope that the quiet anonymity in which Dr. Lynch is so effective an educator will not disallow his recognition as one of the finest gentlemen Saint Ambrose will know. FRESHMEN

To a senior freshmen are strangers, making him feel old. To a junior freshmen are inferiors, making him feel wise. To a sophomore freshmen are new friends, making him feel comfortable. To the faculty freshmen are new hope, reviving those ideals which seem to wear so thin each May.

Seniors are knowledgeable and quiet. In the senior year responsibility appears on the horizon and the newly formed adult is nervous in his outgrown college cocoon. In the first semester the senior is king. In the second he abdicates and his thoughts are elsewhere.

The students of The Mercy Hospital Nursing School, affectionately and anticipatively known as "the nurses," are the young ladies you see lugging all those books around the campus of this men's college. Some attend Saint Ambrose to meet the science requirements for their R.N. Others have a comprehensive curriculum and graduate from Saint Ambrose with a bachelor's degree. Despite the fact that they carry a load of school work and hospital duties which would flatten any of their male contemporaries, they contribute the advantage of a feminine aspect to all college social activities and to many cultural activities.

88 89 THE SEMINARY

In a loosely connected group of architectural relics called Ambrose Hall the seminarians spend their philosophy days. Removed from the main flow of campus life, they go about their rigid routines for the most part unobserved. The lay student knows the seminarian only as a curve breaker in a philosophy class or as somehow related to the eerie tones of plain chant that issue from the music building in the late afternoon. But the "church department," like the building it bravely inhabits, in principio erat. Seminarians no longer are a significant percentage of the student body; physically, Saint Ambrose no longer centers on the seminary. But the spiritual center of Saint Ambrose still is and must be the seminary. It is obvious that the seminarians represent the principles on which the College is founded in their daily schedule of activities. But, more subtly, their presence on campus as a closed group of scholars living and working together under a discipline closely akin to the classical gives Saint Ambrose an advantage remarkable among modern liberal arts colleges. In a day of scattered, commuting student bodies and of the part-time and the automobile, this stabilizing influence is invaluable.

The Saint Ambrose Glee Club, shown with its Marycrest College counterpart, is one of the most active organizations on campus. In addition to concerts and other choral entertainments, the group presents a musical show every year. In 1959 Kismet was the highlight of the school year and in 1960 Brigadoon played to full houses every night. Father James Greene, director, manages to exact professional performance without sacrificing freshness of attitude and amateur spirit. Not all student clubs are as alive or as accomplished as the Glee Club. But social and non-academic affairs depend exclusively on the sponsorship and support of student organizations.

When talking about college days in later years, the student of 1960 will say: "I was at Ambrose when they dropped football." The team at right is the last to be fielded by the college. In 1960 Saint Ambrose joined smaller colleges all over the country in reluctantly adapting to modern developments in the economics of education. Much has been spoken and written about sports at Saint Ambrose. The arguments have persisted pro and con even to the whipping of a not only dead but buried horse. The arguments are theoretical. In practice there is no question that sports at Saint Ambrose, as considered in the man or in the team, always have been a credit to the institution.

FOOTBALL

This year's football team got off to a very slow start. They dropped the first four games before finally breaking into the win column. And then the Bees could only manage to capture three wins. They finished the season with three wins and seven losses. Everything seemed to go wrong with the grid- men this season: they finished with a poor rec ord, lost the Homecoming game, and went score less for a single game for the first time in sixty games. Lincoln University turned the trick in a double fashion as they defeated the Bees in the Homecoming game and also were the only team to hold Ambrose scoreless. However, there were a few bright spots for the grid team. Bill Bohler, senior guard from Ottawa, Illinois, was drafted by the Denver Rangers of the new American League in profes sional football. The Bees also upset Drake Uni versity. But the highlight of the season came when the Bees defeated arch-rival Loras College of Dubuque. a One big factor overshadowed the poor results of the season and that was the termination of intercollegiate football at Saint Ambrose. After much deliberation, Monsignor Collins announced the decision that football was to be dropped im mediately. He listed finances, poor attendance and difficulties of scheduling as the main reasons. This was met with much discussion not only among the students but among the alumni and public. Each year at the end of the season one of the favorite sayings of sports writers is: "It's all over but the shouting." This statement is all too true at Saint Ambrose.

m^mK Even though this season found the Bees on the short end in the won-lost column, consideration must be made of competi tion. The gridmen played some of the top small colleges in the country, four of the teams being in the top ten in small college rankings. In past years Ambrose has fielded some spectacular teams under such coaches as "Moon" Mullins, Forrest Cotton, Frank Brogger and L. G. Friedrichs. Ambros- ians past and present can be proud of the football tradition which has continued for fifty years at St. Ambrose College. BASKETBALL

The Bees opened the season with a bang, break ing the century mark in the first two games. In the second game they broke two school records: Ron Bohls broke the single scoring record with 44 points and as a team the Bees broke the team scoring record with 121 points. After they downed Saint Mary's in the third game of the season, the bees traveled to Western Illinois for their first road game and suffered their first defeat. They then enjoyed a relaxer as they defeated the alumni in the annual alumni game. Illinois Normal then fell to the high-scor ing Bees. This set the stage for Christmas vacation for the majority of Ambrose students, but the cagers turned their attention to the NIAA Invitational Tournament at Kirksville, Missouri. The Bees tasted success here, too, as they captured fourth place. With only a few days rest the Bees headed to Lewis College and due to Ron Summers they enjoyed a little humor on the court. As he at tempted to dunk a shot Ron shattered the bank- board. Splitting the next two games, the Bees started a three game winning streak, including the first defeat of Loras College in five years. The rest of the season was a seesaw affair with the Ambrose regular season record ending at 13-11. The Bees then downed Central College in the initial round of the Iowa playoffs, but Parsons College knocked off the Bees to end the 1959-60 season. TENNIS

This year's tennis team was forced to play under the superior reputation earned by last year's team which was the most successful team fielded by St. Ambrose during the 1958-59 school year. This team earned the reputation of being one of the top teams in the entire midwest. They finished their season with ten wins and only one loss. But under the leadership of Father Hratz the '60 Bee tennis team lived up to the reputation built by former Ambrose teams. Father Hratz was faced with an almost complete rebuilding of his team with only two lettermen re turning. However, these two men had compiled the best records and their experience was the main fac tor in the success of this year's team. They were also the co-captains of this year's team. Bloom, one of the co-captains, advanced to the semi-finals of the National Tournament and compiled an»18-4 rec ord in the '59 season. Underwood, the other co-cap tain, matched Bloom with an 18-4 record.

'^JgSl^dtT" TRACK

This year's track team opened the season with a convincing victory over the Coe College runners, but then were overpowered by Parsons and Loras College. This year's team depended mainly on the incoming freshmen hopefuls. Bob Jackson led the freshmen in the running dept., while Mike Klestinski was the forerunner in the field events. Ed Kelly, a veteran runner, was the mainstay in distance running for the Bees.

167 Brigadoon was long, hard work. And although curtain time for the show was well past press time for the yearbook, a representation of 1960 at Saint Ambrose would be incomplete without pictures of the cast at work. These are rehearsal pictures. Whatever publicity the yearbook affords this group is nothing like what they deserve. Obviously, it would be unfitting for Brigadoon to go unsung.

Then Rodin, creator of "The Thinker," departed from tradition to introduce a new, rough-hewn look, which soon was universally accepted. In daring to do this, Rodin displayed that kind of courage and creativity for which society always has great need. While Wagners Printers enthusiastically congratulate all 1960 graduates and wish them well, we have a special pal on the back for those few who will dare to be creative. "BUILD UPON YOUR AMBROSE FOUNDATION" ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The publication of this book was a happy experience for the editor. Although that happiness may not shine through its pages it is never theless true that nothing would have been done at all were it not for great kindness on the part of a number of people. Mr. Jack Ruff's long hours, without notable compensation, and the patience of Mrs. Ruff are among the major instances. The many nights spent by Mr. Robert Hogan, Mr. Daniel Shea and Mr. Donald Meismer at dull, routine and unrewarding work can be attributed to nothing but their basic generosity. Mr. John Sciarine pounded the pavements for months to pay for this book. Mr. Charles Steilen readily made available valuable information gained from long experience with publications at Saint Ambrose. Miss Juanita Monholland and Mrs. Florence Delavere displayed the patience of two Jobs at the many questions asked them. Father Charles Shepler tempered his efficiency with cordiality. Mr. David Rater, Mr. Paul Bremhorst and Mr. Robert Corwin supplied many incidental but necessary services. Father James Greene inconvenienced himself on many occasions to allow for the clumsy processes of the yearbook. If the editor should graduate this June, it will be because of the massive blind charity of Father Patrick McCoy, Dr. Helmuth Korn- mueller and Mr. Daniel Cahill. The willingness of Mary Alice Moylan Wolfe to take on less in teresting and more time consuming details of yearbook production is something which will not require these pages for the editor to remember. And for anything good here there is a debt to J.E.K., "loved long since and lost awhile."

WILLIAM WOLFE Editor-in-Chief THE OAKS 1960
