Sunday Bi-—school Mass at St. Ambrose Open House at both schools

This year St. Ambrose and Marycrest went "Up, Up, and Away" with Homecoming '68. This year's home coming unbelievably surpassed last year's program. Under the direction of Ambrosian Jim Ruder and Sue Putnam from Marycrest, the students of both schools truly went "up and away" for five thrilling days and nights. Homecoming '68 enjoyed the longest parade ever to appear in the Quad-Cities. A Queen's Tea was a very huge success and the addition of a float-building rally proved fruitful and fun. Another "first" was the hilarious greased pig contest. The flag football game with rival Augustana resulted in victory for the Bees. And no one will ever forget the Saturday evening concert with The Happenings, Fred Smoot, and Denny Brooks, or the fabulous atmosphere of the Friday night dance at the Col. The peak of homecoming was reached Saturday night at the Danceland party where students were surpised with the attendance of the Concert entertainers.

As a member of the Student Government Association, and, finally, as its president, Mike has emphasized the importance of each individual student as well as that of the student body in formulating administrative policy. 30 Pat Elliott is known by all at St. Ambrose College as a leader of social reform. Working closely with the Peace Movement on campus, he has helped initiate the Biafran Relief Fund and has been an active supporter of the Catons- ville Nine. Pat has also served on the Student Council during his junior and senior years as Off-Campus Representative. A smiling fellow with a laugh that Patrick B. Elliott catches on can best be described as a man of principle. History Genoa, III.

Due to his unstinting enthusiasm and zest James Grayson is one of the most outstanding personalities of the senior class. His career at St. Ambrose has exemplified student involvement at its best. Besides holding several club and class offices, Jim has been active in Big Brothers, chorus and Theatre III. Currently, he is president of the local Youth Council of the NAACP. This coupling of Jim's dynamic personality and his activist role on campus has culminated in his being elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

James R. Grayson An outstanding guard and co-captain of the 1968-69 History basketball team, Dennis Geraghty is a playmaker who can Washington, D.C remain calm in the tightest of clutch plays. Denny has also maintained a high average in grades as well as in scoring baskets. He has fittingly been awarded membership to the Monogram Club as a result of his fine performance and has been an active member of the Physical Education Department.

Dennis P. Geraghty Physical Education Davenport, la. Service to the college and to the community has been the outstanding quality of John Heidtke. His service has been shown through involvement in one of the most worthwhile organizations on campus—the Big Brother's Club. During the past year he was its president. John has also main Thomas D. Rochford tained an admirable scholastic standing, especially in his Political Science Peoria, III. major field. A likeable man with his devotion and respon sible attitude toward some of our basic problems wins the recognition of the Oaks staff.

Soft spoken but involved is one of the best descriptions of John H. Heidtke Thomas Rochford. During the past four years Tom has Psychology Woodstock, III. served on the Student Council and was responsible for many successful homecomings. This past year he deserves credit for reviving a once dormant Young Democrats Club into an organization aware of the great political and moral questions facing us today. Despite his many commitments, Tom has maintained a very respectable grade average.

31 Jim Ruder-Homecoming 1968; Jim Ruder=Homecoming spirit; Jim Ruder- St Ambrose spirit. Yes, Jim was the cause and the impetus behind this ^homecoming. How good a job did he do? We ail know the answer to that question. Jim in his usual hard working manner has aso.achieved mention in Who's Who Among American College Students for 1969^During Ws four years here at St. Ambrose, Jim has proven by h.s hard work and very vibrant enthusiasm that he is an outstanding Ambros.an and more than thai an outstanding personality. Jim, nobody else will be as weicome as you will be at Homecoming 1969. James D. Schneider Philosophy Magnolia, Ark.

Jim, whose major is Philosophy, has a philoso James P. Ruder phy all of his own—friendliness. His pleasant Business Manteno, III. southern drawl is easy on the ear. He is always ready to lend a hand to help his fellow student. Among the boarders of Hayes Hall there is no better leader than Jim. He has served two years on both the Academic Senate and the Seminary Senate. If the saying "Life is what you make of it" is true, we know that Jim will have a very good life.

The Athletic Department will always be in debted to the dedication and work of Dennis Thiessen. Through his excellent reporting in the weekly sports column and his involvement in the intramural program, our athletic program has enjoyed continued success. Denny has also put his speech major into practical use by par ticipating in the debate team and broadcasting the basketball games. Always willing to be of service, the "Voice of the Bees" deserves special Henry A. Timbrook Economics recognition for his many contributions. E. Moline, III.

Dennis J. Thiessen Speech & Drama Davenport, la.

Henry has been at St. Ambrose for three years now and maintains better than a "B" average. But Henry's specialty is running. He holds the school mile record; he is a member of the four mile and distance medley teams that also hold school records. In cross-country, he holds the school three, four, and five mile records. During his senior season he set seven consecu has clir axe d h s cr S S tive course records at seven different schools. Henry . At the very center of the entire tunc- tionings of the student element of St. Am brose College is the Student Government Association. The leaders elected to fill these posts, especially the Senior representatives, must be truly devoted to the actual ma chinery of running a modern college. So much of their work is taken for granted. These officers and members are the core of a productive and efficient student body. All the students of our college should be ex ceptionally grateful for the dedicated leaders we have.

Physical Education Club

One of the most active clubs on campus is the Physical Edu cation Club. The members of this club provide the backbone for the successful operation of the college's intramural program. Besides organizing the intramural sports, the members of the Phys ical Education Club also provide the officials for the different proj ects. Because these students officiate they are likewise to be recog nized for their patience needed to cope with the explosive mind of an irate player. This group also is prominent among the clubs on campus pro moting inter-school co-operation and activities with Marycrest. Next to be recognized is this club's involvement in the home basketball games. Last year the two Phys-Ed clubs of St. Ambrose and Marycrest combined to bolster their financial status with a carwash. You can bet that more than cars got washed.

Langdon Gilkey is a professor of The ology at Chicago University who holds a Ph.D. degree in Theology. He is an out standing leader among Protestant the ologians. He has studied Catholic the ology in Rome, Italy and did therefore give a revealing insight into contempor ary religion from a layman's viewpoint. Mr. Gilkey is also the author of three books dealing with the need for better understanding of the current religious situation.

Langdon Gilkey spoke on "Faith and Secularity" on March 25,1969.

Lecture series 1968-69

The role of the modern religious woman in the present religious structure was the topic of Sister Mary Schaldenbrand's lecture at the college center. The important need for a flexible religious woman in these times of religious reform was stressed by this Catholic nun who accented the vital role of the individual in the religious structure of modern society. Sister Schaldenbrand has achieved a Ph. D. degree in the field of Philosophy from the Catholic University of America. Sister Schaldenbrand was an instructor of Philosophy and is well known as an essayist of religious topics.

"Faith and the Person" was the title of a lecture given or November 21,1968 by Sister Mary Schaldenbrand.

118 Below: "Forming a Contemporary Christian Identity" was the topic of Dr. Daniel Callahan.

December 10, 1968 marked the appearance of Bruce Henderson, Religious Editor of Time, who reflected the opinion of Secular Communications. As Religion Editor of Time Magazine and a jour nalist of years of experience, Bruce Henderson has surveyed the present situation of religion and theology with an acute awareness of the back ground of this development. Mr. Henderson's lecture revealed his broad ken of knowledge of current religious affairs and more importantly, their complexity. The educated men and women of today must be conscious of their religious responsibilities. Dr. Daniel Callahan is an intelligent Catholic theologian who has taught, authored numerous books and is presently Executive Editor of Com monweal. Despite this intellectual's relative youth, he is one of the most prominent Catholic theologians in the U.S. He has effectively com bined scholarly research and journalism to give a very informative insight into Catholic Theology. In his presentation at the college, Dr. Callahan emphasized the necessity for an educated mem ber of our society to shape some sort of a notion for himself of the essence of a Christian. The 1968-69 East Coast Club

Members of the East Coast Club hail from all parts of the eastern third of the nation from Maine to Washington, D.C. The club is active socially and academically. Among the club's many noteworthy activities is its participation in Homecoming festivities, inter-club, and in setting up a special East Coast scholarship.

The Chicago Club is one of the larger clubs at St. Ambrose. Primarily this club is socially orientated, providing good times for its members and the student body. Besides the social functions it has presented at the college, the Chicago Club throws two or three events a year in Chicago for its mem bers. This club is a great success and its activities are also prosperous. But this club generously contributes to worth while causes and projects of the college.

133 1968-69 offerings

This season did not stop or, for that matter, even slow down for Theatre III. Besides the usual three major productions the St. Ambrose drama enthusiasts prepared two dramatic productions for television. "The Hollow Crown", an innovation in reader's theater, and "The Valiant", a one-act drama were seen on WOC-TV. Highlighting the year's offerings was one of the only American tragedies, "Detective Story." This play by Sidney Kingsley allowed for one of the largest and most efficient casts in the history of Theatre III. TH E ATRE "A Man for All Seasons" opened in March to a tumult of praise and once again Theatre III proved itself to be a compact, professional, and talented group. The successes of Theatre III are, in truth, due to the efforts of one man. Without his earnest and able direction the quality and professionalism of Theatre III would be greatly diminished. Thank you, Mr. James Willaert.

Edward M. Catich, Art Department chairman. But this book is only the second in a series of three devoted to Imperial letters in ancient Rome. Actually this is his fourth book. The importance of the Origin is that it is documentary evidence supporting Father Catich's theory that the serif was brushed upon the stone by a skillful sign-writer and later was chiselled out, including the serif or finishing elements of the letters, carefully by the cutter. Years of research was conducted by Rev. Catich working with actual inscriptions in Europe from the period studied. The entire book was prepared by Catfish Press, another interest of Father Catich's here at St. Ambrose. With his knowledge and skill in printing, Rev. Catich can prepare his own works in calligraphy, paleography, and epigraphy. Junior Rick Moskowitz, Business Mgr, for 'the Paper Sac'
