  • Socioeconomic and Environmental Valuation of Some Outputs of Petrenia Irrigation Dam, East Halkidiki
Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology Lemnos island, Greece, 8 – 10 September 2003 Full paper Vol. A, pp. 593 - 600 SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUATION OF SOME OUTPUTS OF PETRENIA IRRIGATION DAM, EAST HALKIDIKI A. MICHAILIDIS1, G. ARABATZIS2, M. HADIO3 and M. TSAKIRI1 1Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Agriculture, Faculty of Agricultural Economics, 2Democritus University of Thrace, Department of Forestry-Environmental Management and Natural Resources, and 3Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Information Science. E-mail: [email protected] EXTENDED ABSTRACT Water supply in rural and urban areas is an issue of prime concern, especially in developing countries. The objective of this study was to ex ante estimate some socioeconomic and environmental values of Petrenia Irrigation Dam on the east Halkidiki border. The study area characterized, especially during the summer session, by limited water supply for household and municipal purposes. Although the majority of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) studies have been for environmental goods, the method can be applied to public goods in general. It was hypothesized that the satisfaction of consumers about water supply service, their beliefs in the water management system and affordability might influence Willingness to Pay (WTP) more for water. Accordingly, a Contingent Valuation study was planned in six separate municipal districts (Ouranoupoli, Ierissos, Gomati, Nea Roda, Stratoni and Ammouliani), around the Petrenia irrigation Dam, of Halkidiki prefecture. Several outputs were identified and an economic value was estimated for each. Water supply, recreation, health effects, social impacts, environmental sequences and some more outputs were valued using the CVM.

  • 'Agonistic Pluralism' and 'The Political'
Dispatches from Greece: ‘‘We were sleeping as Individuals and we woke up as Citizens’’ Democracy and Development Revisited: Exploring openings through the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki May, 2015 Master Thesis in International Development and Management Author: Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou Supervisor: Elsa Coimbra Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou LUMID- MSc Thesis Abstract The universalistic understanding of the subject embedded in the Liberal and Marxist traditions together with contrasting accounts of unconstrained agency, fail to explain the contingencies of ground responses that call for social change. The paper makes a case for the opening of the understanding of the human subject when placed in the theoretical terrain of radical political philosophy elaborated by thinkers such as C. Castoriadis, M. Hardt & A. Negri, E. Laclau and C. Mouffe. The conceptualisation of the human subject as both a creative and constrained agent rescues it from deterministic excesses and accounts of unlimited power. Within these confines, the purpose of this paper was to explore the project of autonomy as conceptualised by Castoriadis and relate it to a new articulation of human development. Through a case study of the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki, the democratic openings realised by the creative human praxis and the re-politicisation of individuals, were explored. The self-organised communities call for a creation of public spaces where deliberation and self-reflection can take place, resulting in a re-thinking of the developmental paradigm applied during the years of Greek austerity. The question that remains open is how the new social relations manifested in the area can foster principles of social and individual autonomy in all spheres of social life.

Northern Greece is the least well documented of the regions which were reached by the 8th and 7th c. B.C. Greek colonists. Not only does the study of the Andrian colonies augment the available documentation on the northern Greeks, it also provides an opportunity to examine one mother-city's overall colonization process. Through the sum of ancient sources and archaeological data pertaining to the four Andrian colonies, the study attempts to lay out the socio-economic history of the colonies as a whole and as separate entities. Such aspects as: 1) The foundation dates; the colonization process; 2) the relations with the indigenous populations; and 3) the economic relations with the other Greek colonies in the region, as well as the major centers of the Greek mainland, are examined.
