Developing a Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Island Regions. The case of South Aegean Region in Greece. Apostolos P. Siskos1, Dimitrios Voloudakis1, Dimitrios Lalas1, Nikolaos Gakis1, Grigorios Andronikos2, Dionysios Gkoutis1, Maria Strataki1 1Envirometrics Technical Consultants and Engineers Ltd, 20 Karea str. Athens, 11636, Greece 2South Aegean Region's Managing Authority, 22 Saki Karagiorga str., Ermoupolis, Syros, 841 00, Greece Keywords: Climate change, adaptation, region, island, South Aegean Presenting author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The overall purpose of the Regional Adaptation Plan to Climate Change (RAPCC) of the South Aegean Region (SAR) is to contribute to enhancing the region's resilience to climate change in all sectoral policies as outlined in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. This means increasing preparedness and capacity to address the impacts of climate change at local and regional level, developing a coherent approach and improving coordination. The methodology used to assess the climatic vulnerability of the individual sectors and geographical areas of the SAR and ultimately the climate risk assessment comprised nine solid steps beginning from defining “reference" changes of climatic variables to assess the vulnerability of the different activities and ending with ranking sectors and activities as to the magnitude of the risk. The analysis of the climatic vulnerability and danger and hence risk of the different sectors and activities of the South Aegean Region was carried out for the short and medium term (2021-2050) and long-term horizons (2071-2100) and distinct for the geographical units of Cyclades and Dodecanese. According to these findings the proposed measures in the RAPCC were based on island specific characteristics such as financial-social activities, geomorphology and developed both in horizontal and sectoral actions and classified into High, Medium and Low priority.

  • Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia
Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia (8th – 6th centuries BCE) An honors thesis for the Department of Classics Olivia E. Hayden Tufts University, 2013 Abstract: Although ancient Greeks were traversing the western Mediterranean as early as the Mycenaean Period, the end of the “Dark Age” saw a surge of Greek colonial activity throughout the Mediterranean. Contemporary cities of the Greek homeland were in the process of growing from small, irregularly planned settlements into organized urban spaces. By contrast, the colonies founded overseas in the 8th and 6th centuries BCE lacked any pre-existing structures or spatial organization, allowing the inhabitants to closely approximate their conceptual ideals. For this reason the Greek colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia, known for their extensive use of gridded urban planning, exemplified the overarching trajectory of urban planning in this period. Over the course of the 8th to 6th centuries BCE the Greek cities in Sicily and Magna Graecia developed many common features, including the zoning of domestic, religious, and political space and the implementation of a gridded street plan in the domestic sector. Each city, however, had its own peculiarities and experimental design elements. I will argue that the interplay between standardization and idiosyncrasy in each city developed as a result of vying for recognition within this tight-knit network of affluent Sicilian and South Italian cities. This competition both stimulated the widespread adoption of popular ideas and encouraged the continuous initiation of new trends. ii Table of Contents: Abstract. …………………….………………………………………………………………….... ii Table of Contents …………………………………….………………………………….…….... iii 1. Within the sprawling city of Athens it is easy to imagine the golden age of Greece when Pericles had the Parthenon (the most eminent monument of the ancient Greek architecture) built. Athens is built around the Acropolis and the pinnacled crag of Mt. Lycabettus, which the goddess Athena was said to have dropped from the heavens as a bulwark to defend the city. It is connected to the tradition, religion, art as well as the social and economic life of the inhabitants ever since civilization started leaving its mark on the island. Today, olive orchards constitute one of the most dominant elements in the natural environment of the island, covering 65% of the farming land, and offer employment to almost the majority of its farming families. Oliviculture together with tourism make up two of the most important economic resources in Crete. It offers a significant income to the island and constitutes an interesting and cherished activity to a large part of its inhabitants. The aim of this study was to identify the problems, to come up with ways to take advantage of new possibilities-opportunities and to apply modern proposals – trends in the field of oliviculture. The main topics of this study are: • Identification and study of oliviculture systems.

Papadopoulos, Chair This research project examines the appearance and proliferation of some of the earliest cremation burials in Europe in the context of the prehistoric north Aegean. Using archaeological and osteological evidence from the region between the Pindos mountains and Evros river in northern Greece, this study examines the formation of death rituals, the role of landscape in the emergence of cemeteries, and expressions of social identities against the backdrop of diachronic change and synchronic variation. I draw on a rich and diverse record of mortuary practices to examine the co-existence of cremation and inhumation rites from the beginnings of farming in the Neolithic period
