Abstract: Historic school buildings were built during the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century, using the traditional and locally available building materials and techniques, and most of them still function as schools. Because of the requirements arising from their constant use, there is an intense interest in their structural and energy integration, while there is limited research on the tangible and intangible values they encompass. In this study, an effort has been made to assess the historical, architectural, constructional and structural aspects of a historic school building located in the town of Arnaia, in the mountainous part of Chalkidiki peninsula, Northern Greece. The study included on-site inspection, architectural overview, determination and mapping of the constructional materials and techniques applied, as well as investigation of the preservation state of the building. Additionally, a structural analysis of the system was performed through a three-dimensional finite element model. All research data was comparatively evaluated, in order to identify the principles governing its physiognomy and structure.

  • Socioeconomic and Environmental Valuation of Some Outputs of Petrenia Irrigation Dam, East Halkidiki
Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology Lemnos island, Greece, 8 – 10 September 2003 Full paper Vol. A, pp. 593 - 600 SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUATION OF SOME OUTPUTS OF PETRENIA IRRIGATION DAM, EAST HALKIDIKI A. E-mail: [email protected] EXTENDED ABSTRACT Water supply in rural and urban areas is an issue of prime concern, especially in developing countries. The objective of this study was to ex ante estimate some socioeconomic and environmental values of Petrenia Irrigation Dam on the east Halkidiki border. The study area characterized, especially during the summer session, by limited water supply for household and municipal purposes. Although the majority of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) studies have been for environmental goods, the method can be applied to public goods in general. It was hypothesized that the satisfaction of consumers about water supply service, their beliefs in the water management system and affordability might influence Willingness to Pay (WTP) more for water. Accordingly, a Contingent Valuation study was planned in six separate municipal districts (Ouranoupoli, Ierissos, Gomati, Nea Roda, Stratoni and Ammouliani), around the Petrenia irrigation Dam, of Halkidiki prefecture. Several outputs were identified and an economic value was estimated for each. Water supply, recreation, health effects, social impacts, environmental sequences and some more outputs were valued using the CVM.

  • Spatial Changes of Forests in a Coastal and a Remote Mountainous Area of Greece Over a 65-Year Period

The first pilot area is Kastoria which is a relatively remote and image classification, mountainous area located north-western on the Greek peninsula, while the GIS second one is Propontida which is a coastal area in the Chalkidiki peninsula (central Macedonia, Greece). High resolution orthorectified aerial images are used to detect the general types (classes) of land use/land cover (LULC) in these pilot areas. The results reveal that during the examined period, a notable spatial growth and thickening of the forest areas was found (10,51%) in the pilot area of Kastoria. The spatial homogeneity of the forested areas in Kastoria decreased only by 2,11%. Regarding Propontida, the forested areas decreased in total about 13,02% while the agricultural and arable land has increased by 12,10%. The publication of the European Journal of Geography (EJG) is based on the European Association of Geographers’ goal to make European Geography a worldwide reference and standard.

N. Tsakaldimi, T. K. Tsitsoni, T. Zagas & P. P. Ganatsas Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Forestry and Natural Environment, 54 124 Thessaloniki, Greece [email protected] Keywords: Aleppo pine, natural regeneration, canopy cover, shrub cover ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is the study of Pinus halepensis natural regeneration, without fire, in the forests of the Kassandra peninsula, northern Greece. Pinus halepensis is a Mediterra- nean serotinous wind-dispersed species that easily regenerates after wildfires. However, in the ab- sence of fire a significant seed release takes place during the hot summer. Considering that the seed release is adequate without fires, the particular stand conditions, where natural regeneration ap- pears, were studied. Seedling density and height were measured. Also, stand and plot characteris- tics recorded included tree age, height, dbh, canopy cover, density and height of shrubs, topogra- phy, slope, aspect and the thickness of litter. The results point out an important effect of the stand conditions on Pinus halepensis regeneration. Thus, keeping in mind the particular stand conditions we can plan appropriate silvicultural treatments in order to accomplish satisfactory regeneration. 1 INTRODUCTION Pinus halepensis is the most widely distributed pine throughout the Mediterranean region. It spreads from sea level up to 600-800 m in Quercetalia ilicis floristic zone. From a silvicultural- biological point of view it is a photophilic, dry-warm, frugal species, preferring alkaline to neutral soils (Quezel 1986), as well as being a serotinous, wind-dispersed species that easily regenerates after wildfires (Trabaud et al.
