Samplingwas done on 74 plots in four different areasof the peninsula. The total meanregeneration indiceswere satisfactoryin maturestands and varied between0.60 and 14.26;they had their lowest valuesat the upper positionand increaseddescending the hillside, showingstatistically significant differences. The slopewas also found to be an importantfactor determiningnatural regeneration, which wasbest in areaswith a slopeof O-50%. UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Cremation, Society, and Landscape in the North Aegean, 6000
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Cremation, Society, and Landscape in the North Aegean, 6000 – 700 BCE A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Archaeology by MaryAnn Kontonicolas 2018 © Copyright by MaryAnn Kontonicolas 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Cremation, Society, and Landscape in the North Aegean, 6000 – 700 BCE by MaryAnn Kontonicolas Doctor of Philosophy in Archaeology University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor John K. Papadopoulos, Chair This research project examines the appearance and proliferation of some of the earliest cremation burials in Europe in the context of the prehistoric north Aegean. Using archaeological and osteological evidence from the region between the Pindos mountains and Evros river in northern Greece, this study examines the formation of death rituals, the role of landscape in the emergence of cemeteries, and expressions of social identities against the backdrop of diachronic change and synchronic variation. I draw on a rich and diverse record of mortuary practices to examine the co-existence of cremation and inhumation rites from the beginnings of farming in the Neolithic period to the adoption of the Greek alphabet by the eighth century BCE or earlier. Based on my review of the evidence, I also offer suggestions regarding: 1) why cremation is adopted so early in the Neolithic north Aegean, and essentially nowhere else in contemporary southeast Europe and the Near East; 2) why cremation perseveres and re-emerges as a popular burial rite in ii the Early Iron Age in this region; and 3) whether cremation endured in this region in association with kinship-based states attested in the region later in antiquity, or on the basis of social status, gender, age, or personal preference. -

Radiocarbon Dating the 3Rd Millennium BC in the Central Balkans: a Re-Examination of the Early Bronze Age Sequence

RADIOCARBON DATING THE 3RD MILLENNIUM BC IN THE CENTRAL BALKANS: A RE-EXAMINATION OF THE EARLY BRONZE AGE SEQUENCE Aleksandar Bulatovi´c1 • Maja Gori2* • Marc Vander Linden3 1Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade – Prehistory, Kneza Mihaila 35/IV, Belgrade 11000, Serbia 2ISPC-CNR, Institute of Heritage Science – National Research Council, Rome, Italy 3Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, Bournemouth University, Bournemouth, UK ABSTRACT. Long-standing archaeological narratives suggest that the 3rd millennium cal BC is a key period in Mediterranean and European prehistory, characterized by the development of extensive interaction networks. In the Balkans for instance, the identification of such interactions relies solely upon typological arguments associated with conflicting local terminologies. Through a combination of 25 new radiocarbon (14C) dates and re-examination of the existing documentation, this paper defines the absolute chronology for groups which were previously only broadly framed into the 3rd millennium BC central Balkans (modern-day Serbia and North Macedonia). These absolute dates allow us to establish with greater clarity the chronological relations between different cultural groups that represent the main cultural units of the central Balkans sequence for the 3rd millennium cal BC: Coţofeni-Kostolac, Bubanj-Hum II, Beloti´c-Bela Crkva, Armenochori, and Bubanj Hum III. -

Halkidiki Landscape, Archaeology, and Ethnicity
Halkidiki Landscape, Archaeology, and Ethnicity Elisavet (Bettina) Tsigarida Ephorate of Pella Antiquities Ioannis Xydopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Landscape archaeology in the Mediterranean has evolved in recent decades, as the data collected during field surveys in plains and mountains has been turned into solid knowledge about the past. Its interdisciplinary character (e.g., the simultaneous use of archaeology and/or historical geography together with geophysics) has contributed significantly to its success. In his comprehensive work on the Mediterranean, Fernand Braudel argued that in order to understand the region’s history one should ‘dissect [it] into various planes’, suggesting that researchers should ‘divide historical time into geographical time, social time, and individual time’.1 He held that concentrating on the deeds of certain individuals, where they kings or generals (l’histoire événementielle) was leading us away from a sound understanding of the Mediterranean world. In order to do so, one must take into account the slow unfolding of geomorphological, climatic, and environmental changes, as well as the history of institutions, economic systems, and ideologies. His work inspired the Annales School but was neglected by archaeolo- gists for a long time. In the 1980s new forms of cultural history appeared, yet it was difficult for anyone to suggest that ‘the study of the Mediterranean should return to pre- Braudelian models’.2 It has been argued that writing history from the artefacts found during excavations is inadequate,3 since archaeologists generally think that in this way the material record becomes equivalent (or quasi-equivalent) to the literary sources available. Ian Morris is right when writing that the “great contribution of archaeology to 1 Fernand Braudel, I Mesogeios kai o mesogeiakos kosmos tin epochi tou Philippou B' tis Ispanias [La Méditer- ranée et le monde méditerranéen à l’époque de Philippe II], transl. -
