ZooKeys 565: 1–28. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.565.6877 Abstract In the last decades, several expeditions were organized in Europe by the researchers of the Hungarian Natural History Museum to collect snails, aquatic insects and soil animals (mites, springtails, nematodes, and earthworms). In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. In addition, a new species belong- ing to the family Pseudococcidae, Brevennia larvalis Kaydan, sp.

  • For Municipal Solid Waste Management in Greece
Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity Article Description and Economic Evaluation of a “Zero-Waste Mortar-Producing Process” for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Greece Alexandros Sikalidis 1,2 and Christina Emmanouil 3,* 1 Amsterdam Business School, Accounting Section, University of Amsterdam, 1012 WX Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2 Faculty of Economics, Business and Legal Studies, International Hellenic University, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece 3 School of Spatial Planning and Development, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +30-2310-995638 Received: 2 July 2019; Accepted: 19 July 2019; Published: 23 July 2019 Abstract: The constant increase of municipal solid wastes (MSW) as well as their daily management pose a major challenge to European countries. A significant percentage of MSW originates from household activities. In this study we calculate the costs of setting up and running a zero-waste mortar-producing (ZWMP) process utilizing MSW in Northern Greece. The process is based on a thermal co-processing of properly dried and processed MSW with raw materials (limestone, clay materials, silicates and iron oxides) needed for the production of clinker and consequently of mortar in accordance with the Greek Patent 1003333, which has been proven to be an environmentally friendly process. According to our estimations, the amount of MSW generated in Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace regions, which is conservatively estimated at 1,270,000 t/y for the year 2020 if recycling schemes in Greece are not greatly ameliorated, may sustain six ZWMP plants while offering considerable environmental benefits. This work can be applied to many cities and areas, especially when their population generates MSW at the level of 200,000 t/y, hence requiring one ZWMP plant for processing.

  • Spatial Changes of Forests in a Coastal and a Remote Mountainous Area of Greece Over a 65-Year Period
European Journal of Geography Volume 11, Issue 4, pp. 093 - 109 Article Info: Accepted: 16/12/2020 Corresponding Author: *[email protected] https://doi.org/10.48088/ejg.s.kol.11.4.93.109 Special Issue: “Selected Papers from 12th International Conference of the Hellenic Geographical Society (ICHGS): Innovative Geographies II, 2019” Spatial changes of forests in a coastal and a remote mountainous area of Greece over a 65-year period Stavros KOLIOS1*, George NTOGAS2, 1 University of Ioannina, Greece 2 Efthimios ZERVAS2 Hellenic Open University, Greece Keywords: Abstract ICHGS-2019, The scope of the study is to detect spatial changes in the forested areas over forest changes, six decades (1945 - 2010) of two completely different landscapes in Greece spatial analysis, (pilot areas). The first pilot area is Kastoria which is a relatively remote and image classification, mountainous area located north-western on the Greek peninsula, while the GIS second one is Propontida which is a coastal area in the Chalkidiki peninsula (central Macedonia, Greece). High resolution orthorectified aerial images are used to detect the general types (classes) of land use/land cover (LULC) in these pilot areas. The results reveal that during the examined period, a notable spatial growth and thickening of the forest areas was found (10,51%) in the pilot area of Kastoria. The spatial homogeneity of the forested areas in Kastoria decreased only by 2,11%. Regarding Propontida, the forested areas decreased in total about 13,02% while the agricultural and arable land has increased by 12,10%. The publication of the European Journal of Geography (EJG) is based on the European Association of Geographers’ goal to make European Geography a worldwide reference and standard.

N. Tsakaldimi, T. K. Tsitsoni, T. Zagas & P. P. Ganatsas Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Forestry and Natural Environment, 54 124 Thessaloniki, Greece [email protected] Keywords: Aleppo pine, natural regeneration, canopy cover, shrub cover ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is the study of Pinus halepensis natural regeneration, without fire, in the forests of the Kassandra peninsula, northern Greece. Pinus halepensis is a Mediterra- nean serotinous wind-dispersed species that easily regenerates after wildfires. However, in the ab- sence of fire a significant seed release takes place during the hot summer. Considering that the seed release is adequate without fires, the particular stand conditions, where natural regeneration ap- pears, were studied. Seedling density and height were measured. Also, stand and plot characteris- tics recorded included tree age, height, dbh, canopy cover, density and height of shrubs, topogra- phy, slope, aspect and the thickness of litter. The results point out an important effect of the stand conditions on Pinus halepensis regeneration. Thus, keeping in mind the particular stand conditions we can plan appropriate silvicultural treatments in order to accomplish satisfactory regeneration. 1 INTRODUCTION Pinus halepensis is the most widely distributed pine throughout the Mediterranean region. It spreads from sea level up to 600-800 m in Quercetalia ilicis floristic zone. From a silvicultural- biological point of view it is a photophilic, dry-warm, frugal species, preferring alkaline to neutral soils (Quezel 1986), as well as being a serotinous, wind-dispersed species that easily regenerates after wildfires (Trabaud et al.
