One of the most important Greeks in history, a giant of philosophy with a comprehensive knowledge of all sciences. He was born and raised here, in this land, on this, the Aristotelian mountain, which was named after his own, proud, origin. He walked along these verdant paths, drowned in unspoilt vegetation, gazing at the Aegean Sea, at the Mediterranean. This is the nature that contributed to shaping his world view. This green and blue setting set the foundations for his thought and expression. And, indeed, his ideas and theories were shaped by the identity of this place! ………………………………………………………………………………… Learn about all this by following his footsteps, walking on the Aristotelian Mountain and discovering the ancient Greek origins of the place, experiencing the Aristotelian history and feeling a that you are a part of this land! Go ahead! Our network welcomes you to the future! Mayor_Message Eastern Halkidiki and Aristoteles Municipality consist a unique destination. On the borders of Mount Athos, the only living religious monument in the world, it is a leading pilgrimaging destination with dozens of special routes inside and outside the Holy Community. Following in the steps of Persian king Xerxes, who in antiquity crossed with his fleet through the narrowest piece of Athonian land, to conquer Greece, this route is today a point of reference between the East and the West, as the sole Persian footprint in Europe. Birthplace of the greatest Greek philosopher, Aristotle, the land welcomes thousands of travellers and intellectuals in its archaeological site of exquisite natural beauty. Motherland of the famous Mademochoria, it has been one of the most economically powerful areas in the Ottoman period, a thoroughly alternative natural destination, combining 300 kilometres of coastline with two mountains, it composes an exceptional natural scenery and particular architectural techniques, that shape phenomena and tourist figures hard to find in only one destination! The people born in and serving this unique spot in the world, have mapped seventeen (17) of the dozens of special and branded routes and proudly present them to you. We have created for you, fans of walking, an excellent database, where each route is connected to an international historical uniqueness: Mount Athos and the Byzantine Empire, Philosopher Aristotle - tutor to Alexander the Great, The Persian wars of antiquity, The Ottoman period Mamedochoria, The place in with Alexis Zorbas used to live for many years. This is the difference between walking routes around the world and those in the region around Athos: each one takes visitors to different historical eras and creates an immediate contact with the historical evidence and archaeological findings, thus turning walking - apart from a mere nature-loving activity - to a historical tour through monuments and sites with museum value and identity! Abstract: Historic school buildings were built during the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century, using the traditional and locally available building materials and techniques, and most of them still function as schools. Because of the requirements arising from their constant use, there is an intense interest in their structural and energy integration, while there is limited research on the tangible and intangible values they encompass. In this study, an effort has been made to assess the historical, architectural, constructional and structural aspects of a historic school building located in the town of Arnaia, in the mountainous part of Chalkidiki peninsula, Northern Greece. The study included on-site inspection, architectural overview, determination and mapping of the constructional materials and techniques applied, as well as investigation of the preservation state of the building. Additionally, a structural analysis of the system was performed through a three-dimensional finite element model. All research data was comparatively evaluated, in order to identify the principles governing its physiognomy and structure.

  • Socioeconomic and Environmental Valuation of Some Outputs of Petrenia Irrigation Dam, East Halkidiki
Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology Lemnos island, Greece, 8 – 10 September 2003 Full paper Vol. A, pp. 593 - 600 SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUATION OF SOME OUTPUTS OF PETRENIA IRRIGATION DAM, EAST HALKIDIKI A. E-mail: [email protected] EXTENDED ABSTRACT Water supply in rural and urban areas is an issue of prime concern, especially in developing countries. The objective of this study was to ex ante estimate some socioeconomic and environmental values of Petrenia Irrigation Dam on the east Halkidiki border. The study area characterized, especially during the summer session, by limited water supply for household and municipal purposes. Although the majority of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) studies have been for environmental goods, the method can be applied to public goods in general. It was hypothesized that the satisfaction of consumers about water supply service, their beliefs in the water management system and affordability might influence Willingness to Pay (WTP) more for water. Accordingly, a Contingent Valuation study was planned in six separate municipal districts (Ouranoupoli, Ierissos, Gomati, Nea Roda, Stratoni and Ammouliani), around the Petrenia irrigation Dam, of Halkidiki prefecture. Several outputs were identified and an economic value was estimated for each. Water supply, recreation, health effects, social impacts, environmental sequences and some more outputs were valued using the CVM.

The first pilot area is Kastoria which is a relatively remote and image classification, mountainous area located north-western on the Greek peninsula, while the GIS second one is Propontida which is a coastal area in the Chalkidiki peninsula (central Macedonia, Greece). High resolution orthorectified aerial images are used to detect the general types (classes) of land use/land cover (LULC) in these pilot areas. The results reveal that during the examined period, a notable spatial growth and thickening of the forest areas was found (10,51%) in the pilot area of Kastoria. The spatial homogeneity of the forested areas in Kastoria decreased only by 2,11%. Regarding Propontida, the forested areas decreased in total about 13,02% while the agricultural and arable land has increased by 12,10%. The publication of the European Journal of Geography (EJG) is based on the European Association of Geographers’ goal to make European Geography a worldwide reference and standard.

EXPERT-LED PETER SOMMER ARCHAEOLOGICAL & CULTURAL TRAVELS TOURS & GULET CRUISES 2021 PB Peter Sommer Travels Peter Sommer Travels 1 WELCOME WHY TRAVEL WITH US? TO PETER SOMMER TR AVELS Writing this in autumn 2020, it is hard to know quite where to begin. I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced.
