Romans 10:15b 2 Highlights April 1, 2016 ASCUI Corner: distracted driver awareness ARIANA SADEGHIPOUR ASCUI SECRETARY April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month and ASCUI wants to raise awareness on the Concordia campus. Campus safety and Dean of Students Dr. Gilbert Fugitt, are working alongside various faculty, staff and students to decrease dis- tracted driving on campus. Distracted driving is not un- common - proof of its existence on Concordia’s campus can even be found in social media post- ings. Distracted driving can be defined as “any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving.” This includes “texting, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, using a GPS system, and adjusting a stereo.” When asked, a group of 20 student drivers all admitted to driving while being distracted. How can the Concordia com- munity decrease the amount of distracted drivers? The Irvine Police Department has the fol- lowing suggestions: “Place your phone on silent, put it in your glove box, or in the trunk to avoid use while driving, pull over and park if you need to make a phone call or text, tell the driver you are uncomfort- able with their cell phone use if you are the passenger, and if you are talking to someone who is on their phone while driving, tell them to call you back when they have parked in a safe loca- tion.” There are key steps that can be taken to minimize the number of distracted driving incidents on campus. Make an effort to keep yourself, your pas- sengers and other drivers on the road safe. THE CONCORDIA INVESTIGATE.INFORM.IGNITE.INVOLVE. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau arrived together in a black Audi R8 Spyder*. Normally, Audi’s Technical Development team conceals their secret prototypes with a special adhesive foil with a camouflaged pattern of black and white swirls. However, this time Audi Design developed a new camouflage foil with a Spider-Man design specifically for the appearance on the red carpet at the world premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. The traditional swirl design has been modified to incorporate spider webs on the vehicle doors and within the signature rings. Even before its official world premiere, the first glimpses of the Audi A8’s can be seen on the big screen in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ – viewers can see parts of the front and side designs in the film. In addition, moviegoers also get to see Audi AI Traffic Jam Pilot in action when Happy Hogan drives Peter Parker and momentarily removing his hands from the wheel.

“WE CAN’T EVEN PLAY OURSELVES”: MIXED-RACE ACTRESSES IN THE EARLY TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES AUGUST 2017 By Valerie M. Lo Dissertation Committee: Robert Perkinson, Chairperson Mari Yoshihara Jonna Eagle Konrad Ng Jonathan Okamura Keywords: Mixed race, Ambiguity, Post-Racial, Color-blind, Film ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project has been a test of my resiliency and grew from my desire to add a small contribution to the ongoing discussion of mixed race representations in film and television. Many people have come into my life in the last several years and encouraged my studies, talked excitedly with me, and subtly (or blatantly) pushed me to continue when I thought the road ahead looked too ominous. In 2005, at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies banquet, my Master’s thesis chair, Wei Ming Dariotis, remarked that a PhD was in the stars for me. Those words stayed close to me during my graduate work at the University of Hawai'i. My first teaching assistantship with Isabelle Peluad at San Francisco State University in Asian American Literature showed me exactly what I wanted to immerse myself in for the rest of my life. Graduate courses with Russell Jeung and Madeline Hsu reaffirmed my desire to work within the field of Asian American Studies and continue on to a doctorate program. My coursework in American Studies was rigorous and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way.

RHETORICAL INQUIRY: FEMINIST ARGUMENTATIVE MODES AND EXPECTATIONS IN DETECTIVE FICTION Eden M. Leone A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2015 Committee: Kristine L. Blair, Advisor Catherine Cassara Graduate Faculty Representative Lee Nickoson Sue Carter Wood ii ABSTRACT Kristine L. Blair, Advisor This dissertation reports my study of knowledge making practices used by characters in two forms of popular detective entertainment media: The popular FOX television series Bones, featuring a team of forensic scientists and FBI agents who solve crimes together, and Agatha Christie’s popular detective novel 4:50 from Paddington, featuring the elderly Ms. Jane Marple, who works with her friends and the police to solve a murder. Using the three “ways of knowing” described in Belenky et al’s Women’s Ways of Knowing as heuristic analytical lenses, I perform content analyses on six episodes of the Bones series and the entire 4:50 from Paddington novel to determine how the main characters in each of these popular media create knowledge on their own and with others to solve crimes. I situate my content analysis findings within recent discussions of feminist theory and pedagogical practice to argue that the process of my study, its emphasis on popular media forms, and my findings can contribute to the broader disciplinary understanding of knowledge making within rhetoric and composition as a field of study. iii DEDICATION For my parents: my dad who believed that anything is possible and my mom who proved it.

The flagship of the premium brand makes a guest appearance in the Marvel blockbuster ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ in theaters worldwide in July . Therefore, movie fans will be the first to catch a glance at the luxurious sedan at the film premiere which takes place in Los Angeles on June 28. In the Marvel blockbuster, Tom Holland plays ‘Peter Parker’ who’s chauffeured around by ‘Happy Hogan’ (Jon Favreau) in the new Audi A8 L. The movie scene allows a first impression of the front and side design of the new sedan. Besides that, moviegoers also get a demo of new innovations such as highly automated driving in traffic jams: while driving ‘Happy’ takes his hands off the steering wheel and, like magic, it continues to turn all on its own. The Audi A8 takes over the task of driving when the Audi AI traffic jam pilot is turned on. In addition to the Audi A8, two other Audi models make guest appearances in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’: ‘Tony Stark’ stays classy with the Audi R8 V10 Spyder*, whereas ‘Peter Parker’ himself drives an Audi TTS Roadster*.
