  • See It Big! Action Features More Than 30 Action Movie Favorites on the Big
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films

The Interview Affair, the Sony Hack, and the Hollywood/Washington Power Nexus Today An early quasi-police procedural showing J. Edgar Hoover’s Federal Bureau of Investigation “smashing” a communist sleeper cell in Boston, Alfred L. Werker’s 1952 docudrama Walk East on Beacon looks at first much like any other Red-baiting Hollywood production of the McCarthy era. On closer inspection, the movie offers us a keen insight into the Hollywood/Washington power nexus during the Cold War. Recently declassified documents reveal that the FBI’s top brass not only helped to inspire Walk East on Beacon but also to cast and market the film. More intriguingly, America’s most powerful military Cold War think tank, the RAND Corporation, was at the heart of the movie’s screenplay. Hollywood scriptwriter Leo Rosten worked as a part-time adviser on social sciences for RAND and based key elements of his plot for Walk East on Beacon on top-secret RAND projects, principally the military uses of satellites and computers.

These spy movies frequently create an assumption that this genre is exclusively masculine, as women have been made oblivious and restricted to either supporting roles or non-spy roles. In 2010 and 2012, portrayal of women in spy movies was finally changed after the release of Salt and Zero Dark Thirty, in which women became the leading spy protagonists. Through the post-nationalist American Studies perspective, this study discusses the importance of both movies in reinventing women’s identity representation in a masculine genre in response to the evolving American society. • Sean Penn 2007)
Journal of American Studies of Turkey 25 (2007) : 99-101 Into the Wild (Sean Penn 2007) Mark Bousquet Hollywood has had a long love affair with the American landscape. Typically focused on the open expanses of the American West (evidenced most prominently in the westerns of John Ford, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Costner), directors have seemingly operated on the principle that intrinsic to any story set against nature is to highlight the bigness and beauty of the land. Sean Penn’s approach (seen through the cinematography of Eric Gautier) to shooting the landscape in Into the Wild operates largely antithetically to the western. Instead of focusing on the largeness of the American wilderness, Penn’s approach owes a stylistic debt to Terence Malick (whom Penn worked with on The Thin Red Line 1998), crafting an intimate relationship with the natural world. Into the Wild is an excellent and effective adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book by the same name, relating the true journey of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), who left American civilization behind to seek a romanticized relationship to the wilderness of his literary heroes Jack London and Henry David Thoreau. After graduating from Emory University, McCandless donates the bulk of his savings ($24,000) to Oxfam America and severs his ties with civilization, both official (destroying his identification and credit cards) and personal (deliberately misleading his family about his plans). Chris heads out on the road in search of his ultimate destination of Alaska. Along the way, McCandless

  • Netflix's Dead to Me Ups Its Game for Season Two with Cooke Optics S7/I
PRESS RELEASE Netflix’s Dead to Me Ups Its Game for Season Two with Cooke Optics S7/i Full Frame Plus Prime Lenses - Cinematographer Toby Oliver, ACS, enhances photography with the ‘Cooke Look - Leicester, UK – 07 May 2020 – The Netflix original series Dead to Me has moved production to Cooke Optics S7/i Full Frame Plus prime lenses for season two to take advantage of the ‘Cooke Look®’ to bring a flattering look for stars Christina Applegate (nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy for season one) and Linda Cardellini. With season two set to air in 2020, the series chronicles the story of a powerful friendship that blossoms between a tightly wound widow and a free spirit with a shocking secret. When series creator and showrunner Liz Feldman wanted her main actresses to look their best on screen for season two, cinematographer Toby Oliver, ACS — who was brought on to lens the second season — decided that the “Cooke Look” would be exactly what was needed. “Liz wanted to maintain as much of the overall look of season one as possible, but she also wanted the main actresses to appear warmer on screen,” said Oliver. “To improve the photography from the first season, I decided that the Cooke S7/i Full Frame Plus prime lenses would give her exactly what she was looking for. I’ve used Cookes a lot over the years, and they are quite flattering, especially with close-ups. There’s just something about the ‘Cooke Look’ that makes actors look really good on screen – it gives the skin a nice glow.” This was to be Oliver’s first full frame project, shooting on Sony Venice cameras in 6K mode, using all of the full-frame sensor, so he did a range of lens tests at camera and lens supplier Alternative Rentals in Los Angeles.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is; what are you doing for others?" -MLK OUR VISION For over a decade, MDC has helped establish rewarding relationships between thousands of individuals, businesses and charities who care deeply about the well-being of others and the community. Through our work (video production, event planning & consulting) we want to share stories that matter, organize events that build bridges, highlight extraordinary individuals, create simple and effective ways of giving back, and act as professional matchmakers. Our mission has always been to connect the people who want to help with the people who need help the most. From the start, we've witnessed heartbreaking scenarios where trauma and hardship causes a child or family to feel isolated and hopeless. Despite what we're taught, time is more precious than gold and we strive to make every day, hour and minute count. The world does not stop when tragedy strikes; but good people can and do. We enlist the help of caregivers across every business sector around the globe and rely on them to help us create special moments in time that bring hope and joy to those suffering through hardship. We've created an Active Response Team; an unofficial team of do-gooders who are willing to step up to the plate when needed. And just like the word "team" signifies, together everyone achieves more. MDC works by cause, not by client -- and in doing so, it allows us to foster collaboration and look after the interests of all involved. The impact we make by working together is more powerful and far-reaching than most individuals can achieve on their own.
