Emerging Financing Tools for Renewable Energy Investments. Turk J Electr Power Energy Syst, 2021; 1(1): 33-41. ABSTRACT Renewable energy sources (RES) are one of the important sources that can be used for transition to a sustainable low carbon economy. With increasing use of RES, significant contribution can be made to the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping global warming below 2 °C. In recent years, the increase in RES investments has revealed different financing options. Crowdfunding, green bonds, and green loans financing tools are becoming increasingly popular tools for financing RES investments. By using these financial tools, financing opportunities of RES investments have been diversified. In recent years, these financing tools are also being increasingly used in Turkey. To increase the use of crowdfunding in RES investments, dedicated crowdfunding platforms should be established. An important issue in green bonds is external opinion; therefore, introducing a legal obligation will increase investors’ interest in green bonds and their trust in the bond issuer. In addition to the existing opportunities in green loans, tax incentives can be provided to contribute to RES investments. Keywords: Renewable energy, renewable energy finance, crowdfunding, green bond, green loan Introduction RES sources within the installed power plants has been increas- Owing to the dominant role of fossil fuels in meeting global ener- ing.

  • Increasing Foreign Banks' Presence Through M&As: the Case of Turkey
WSEAS TRANSACTIONS on BUSINESS and ECONOMICS Eda Orhun Increasing Foreign Banks’ Presence through M&As: The Case of Turkey EDA ORHUN College of Business Zayed University Khalifa City B, Abu Dhabi, P.O. Box 144534 UAE [email protected] Abstract— Turkey had been a closed economy until the beginning of 1980s. However, this changed once the government adopted liberalization and de-regulation programs at that time. Decreasing entry barriers and approved foreign ownership in the banking sector naturally triggered more foreign bank entry in the coming years. This trend got changed in nature especially after the currency crisis of 2001. Recovering from the crisis stronger with a growing economy, Turkish banking sector with its technologically advanced banks evoked the appetite of foreign counterparts that mostly chose the entry method of M&As. This created the empirical fact that while the number of foreign banks have been increasing, the number of (local) private banks have been decreasing due to these acquisitions in the decade of 2000s. This paper presents data for the mentioned result together with the review of Turkish banking sector starting from 1980s. The paper also examines the major deals that were realized in the last decade and tries to understand the reasons of increased foreign bank presence by outlining the ‘pull factors’ of the Turkish economy. Key-Words: acquisitions, de-regulation, foreign bank entry, globalization, pull factors. 1 Introduction 2 Evolution of the Banking Sector: When the topic comes to foreign banks expansion into emerging markets, there has been a significant 1980-2000s Accordingly, in the 1980s the policymakers started trend towards the Central and Eastern European to re-structure and liberalize the Turkish banking (CEE) markets ever since the beginning of the Cold system.

Bu çalışmada ekonomik ve finansal alanda aktif rol oynayan Türk bankacılık sektörünün kamu, özel ve yabancı sermayeli mevduat bankalarının pandemi döneminde yaşadığı sıkıntıların finansal tablolarına nasıl yansıdığı incelemeye alınmıştır. Pandemi sürecinde sektörün karlılık, net faiz marjı, kredi/mevduat, likidite oranları ile nakit akış tab- loları aracılığıyla faaliyet gelirleri analiz edilmiştir. Pandemi öncesine göre; azalan karlılık, bankacılık esas faaliyetlerinde gerileme ve likidite tutma eğilimleri tespit edilmiştir. Diğer taraftan piyasalarda yaşanan ve yaşanması beklenen olumsuz ekonomik durumların iyileştirilmesi amacıyla bankacılık sektörünün aktif rol oynaması adına yapılan yasal düzenlemeler ve bu düzenlemelerin finansal tablo- lara nasıl yansıdığı incelenmiştir. Buna göre mevduat bankalarının; pandeminin olumsuz etkilerine karşı hane halkı ve reel kesime kredi vermesi, kredi takip vadelerinin uzatılması, yabancı paranın piya- salar üzerindeki etkisini azaltmak amacıyla devlet borçlanma senetlerine yönelmesi ve swap işlemleri yapması şeklinde özetlenebilir. Pandeminin üç çeyrek durum tablosu bu olmakla birlikte salgının hala

This can be attributed either to more global knowledge or more professional tactics in banking transactions. On the other hand, to be familiar with its soci- ety’s culture can be an opportunity for domestic banks. In this study, Turkish banks have been evaluated using finan- cial ratios taking into consideration domestic and foreign ownership. The banks have also been ranked according to performance. To achieve this, the principal components analysis and discriminant analysis have been applied. Due to this aim, financial data of 16 banks of which securities are actively traded in Borsa Istanbul for the years 2009 through 2014 are analyzed through panel data analysis. Seven of these banks are also listed in BIST Corporate Governance Index. The year 2009 is chosen as the beginning year in this analysis in order to evaluate the current financial performance as accurately as possible by ignoring financial performance of banks prior to financial crisis of 2008, since this data is redundant for evaluation planned to be conducted. In this analysis, it is found out that: a) being in corporate governance index has no significant impact on market value of banks; b) there is a significant statistical correlation between market value and Return on Assets (ROA) and amount of loans granted; c) there is a negative statistical correlation between market value and deposit size and d) there is no meaningful statistical relationship between market value and neither equity size and being listed in corporate governance index.
