Box 1125-30100, Eldoret, Kenya *Corresponding Author: [email protected] [Accepted: 22 April 2017] Abstract: A total of 150 bacterial strains were isolated from the root nodules of Prosopis juliflora growing in soils collected from Marigat area of Kenya. Soil samples from representative colonized zones of Tortilis, Grass and Prosopis were used in trapping the microsymbionts. A physiological plate screening allowed the selection of 60 strains which were characterized based on morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. Tolerance to salinity, acid and alkaline pH and resistance to antibiotics were studied as phenotypic markers. Morphological characteristics allowed the description of a wide physiological diversity among tested isolates. Establishing mutualistic interactions in novel environments is important for the successful establishment of some non-native plant species. The associations may have negative impact on the interaction networks of the native species whereby non-native species becoming dominant. Our study suggests that P. juliflora may have led to the diversity of N-fixing microsymbionts observed in the study area. The study provides basis for further research on the phylogeny of rhozobial strains nodulating P. juliflora, as well as their use as inoculants to improve growth and nitrogen fixation in arid lands of Kenya. -

Gresshoff and Brett Ferguson Received: 12 February 2017; Accepted: 21 March 2017; Published: 26 March 2017 Abstract: Most species in the Leguminosae (legume family) can fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) via symbiotic bacteria (rhizobia) in root nodules. Here, the literature on legume-rhizobia symbioses in field soils was reviewed and genotypically characterised rhizobia related to the taxonomy of the legumes from which they were isolated. The Leguminosae was divided into three sub-families, the Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae and Papilionoideae. Bradyrhizobium spp. were the exclusive rhizobial symbionts of species in the Caesalpinioideae, but data are limited. Generally, a range of rhizobia genera nodulated legume species across the two Mimosoideae tribes Ingeae and Mimoseae, but Mimosa spp. show specificity towards Burkholderia in central and southern Brazil, Rhizobium/Ensifer in central Mexico and Cupriavidus in southern Uruguay. These specific symbioses are likely to be at least in part related to the relative occurrence of the potential symbionts in soils of the different regions. Generally, Papilionoideae species were promiscuous in relation to rhizobial symbionts, but specificity for rhizobial genus appears to hold at the tribe level for the Fabeae (Rhizobium), the genus level for Cytisus (Bradyrhizobium), Lupinus (Bradyrhizobium) and the New Zealand native Sophora spp. (Mesorhizobium) and species level for Cicer arietinum (Mesorhizobium), Listia bainesii (Methylobacterium) and Listia angolensis (Microvirga). -

W. Wight and Trifolium repens L. (Fabales Fabaceae) in natural flora of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Based on extensive field surveys and literature review, it was apparent that these species have not been recorded before in the UAE flora.It might be important to mention that the two new records have great economic and agricultural importance. Both species are spontaneously occurring in the natural habitat and considered as good forage and can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. Specimens of both newly recoded species are deposited in the Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium (SSBH), UAE. Descriptions and photo - graphs of these species are provided. The new records of vascular plants in UAE flora would help ecologists and conservation biologists in more potential scientific research and natural resources exploitations. Leaves with axis usually aculeate, to about (min. 5.5) 9.5-29.5 (max. 35) cm long, 20-100 foliate; stipules linear lanceolate, 5-10 mm long, adaxially pubescent, pilose on margins and above, late caducous; petiole 2-20 mm long; leaflets oblong to oblong linear, 0.75-2 (max. 2.6) cm x 1.5-3 (max. 5) mm, obtuse, mucronate, glabrous on both surfaces, in (min. 10) 20-50 (55 max) pairs; base obtuse; apex obtuse, emarginate, usually apiculate, glabrescent; stipels minute, caducous; inflorescence and pedicels often aculeate; bracts and bracteoles linear, caducous. Raceme (min. 1) 2.5-15 (max. 16.5) cm long, 1-12 (max. 14) flowered; peduncle (min. 0.5) 1.5-4 (max. 6) long, glabrous; flowers 10-12 (max. 13) mm long; pedicels 6-11 mm long; calyx about 3-5 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, glabrous except when puberulent along the margin and inside teeth; teeth triangular 0.5-1 mm long; corolla yellow with brownish markings; vexillum with wedge-shaped, truncate basal appendages within; standard rounded to obovate, 1-1.5 cm x 8-14 mm, pale yellowish, spotted brownish or purplish; wings oblong, 1-1.25 cm x 2.5-3 mm, yellow; keel straight, 1-1.3 cm x 3.5-5 mm; staminal tube up to 12 mm long, free filament parts 2-4 mm long; pistil glabrous; style 2-3 mm long; stigma capitate. -

Interest in green manures has also been revived because of the continuously increasing concern for maintaining long-term soil productivity and ecological sustainability. This interest has led to the identification of lesser known legume plants that have green manuring potential, e.g. Sesbania cannabina. Sesbania has vigorous growth and is adapted to various adverse climatic conditions. Sesbania species fix nitrogen, and produce large no of root nodules for this purpose. Thus, it provides low-cost nitrogen inputs incrop production system. Sesbania cannabina is a multipurpose annual plant which can serve as a green manure, green leaf manure, a biofertilizer and is a good companion crop for wetland rice cultivation. It grows well under water logged or unirrigated conditions, tolerant to high temperatures (36-44°C), high soil alkalinity (pH 10) and establishes during rainy season in a wide variety of soils such as loamy, clayey, black and sandy soils. Sesbania species can play an important role in long-term maintenance of soil fertility and productivity. -

Sequences were obtained from GenBank and analyzed using the maximum likelihood and the maximum parsimony approaches. A maximum likelihood tree was built using sequences of the rbcL plastid gene in order to enable comparison of the results. The GA20ox1 gene presents neutral evolution, levels of homoplasy equivalent to that observed in chloroplast sequences and generated well-resolved phylogenetic relationships. The relationship between Mocots and Eudicots based on the GA20ox1 gene was clear resolved, revealing the evolution of both groups. All these characteristics taken together make the GA20ox1 gene a promissory marker to corroborate as well as to complement and resolve phylogeneticKeywords: relationships among species within one to several genera. Huge efforts have been done to create green spaces across the country including afforestation and urban landscaping. Most of the landscaping designs were inspired from western landscapes comprises mostly of exotic species, which do not reconcile with the environmental conditions of the UAE. The intensive use of exotic species in artificial vegetation, high water requirements for the UAE greenery, coupled with water shortages and salinity, are causing major environmental and ecological challenges. Fortunately, the UAE hosts a unique flora and fauna that show remarkable adjustment to harsh weather conditions. Here we emphasize the use of native plants due to their potential to develop landscapes in saline and water shortage conditions, leading to reduced water usage for landscaping. The preservation of native biodiversity of the UAE will be an added benefit. In this article the main aspects of the UAE landscaping efforts, with the associated water resources using native plants in landscaping, problems in promoting native plants in landscaping and possible solutions are discussed.
