  • Today Is: National Cold Cuts Day
Today Is: National Cold Cuts Day Dagwood, eat your heart out. March 3rd is National Cold Cuts Day. Call them lunch meats, deli meats, sandwich meats or cold cuts. Some like them thick, while others stack them mile high. Others still just like them with cheese and crackers. However you like them, National Cold Cuts Day was made for sandwich and snack makers. Dagwood sandwich A Dagwood is a tall, multi-layered sandwich made with a variety of meats, cheeses, and condiments. It was named after Dagwood Bumstead, a central character in the comic strip Blondie, who is frequently illustrated making enormous sandwiches. Wikipedia There are the deli staples like the humble turkey and ham. Then there are the culinary delights like salami and prosciutto and flavors that require a more acquired taste like head cheese and braunschweiger. Whatever your taste, there is a cold cut for everyone. Well, everyone except the vegetarian. Every nationality has a flavor all their own when it comes to seasoning, curing and aging a variety of meats. The flavor is altered by spices, smoking and time. When the animal is butchered as well as temperature and air circulation affect the flavor, too. It’s practically an art history lesson all rolled into one and at the end of it all there’s mouth watering food that can be enjoyed with friends and a good beverage. Or, it’s simply a piece of meat meant to make a meal. Breaking bread with friends sounds so much more delightful, though. One of the most well known cold cuts in the United States due to a famous commercial is bologna.

EXPLORING RACE, CLASS, AND CULTURE IN CONTRACTS Madorie Florestal* A superior court in Worcester, Massachusetts, recently determined that a burrito is not a sandwich. Surprisingly, the decision sparked a firestorm of media attention. Worcester, Massachusetts, is hardly the pinnacle of the culinary arts-so why all the interest in the musings of one lone judge on the nature of burtos and sandwiches? Closer inspection revealed the allure of this otherwise peculiar case: Potentially thousands of dollars turned on the interpretation of a single word in a single clause of a commercial contract. A filling or spread combined with bread creates a sandwich. Sandwiches are the most popular lunch food in the United States. Their popularity as a breakfast food is increasing, due the ease at which they’re eaten. John Montagu, also known as Lord Sandwich of 18th century England, was not the inventor of the modern-day sandwich. He did popularize it, however. Being quite a gambler, this form of food allowed him to continue playing cards while eating, without getting his hands greasy. The bread is the basic ingredient of any sandwich. Use the freshest bread available; day-old bread can be used for toasting without loss of quality. The spread has 3 functions: to prevent the bread from soaking up the filling; to add flavor; and to add moistness. Butter and mayonnaise are the most commonly used spreads. The filling provides the main flavor of the sandwich, and the choices are nearly unlimited. Meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs and salads (tuna, chicken, egg) are all common protein fillings. An open-faced sandwich can be hot or cold, and is made from a single slice of bread on the bottom. A canapé (CAN-uh-pay) is a tiny open-faced sandwich served as an hors d’oeuvre (o DERV) (or DERV). These are hot or cold bite-sized finger food that is served before a meal as an appetizer. A tea sandwich is a small cold sandwich, usually served on bread or toast with the crusts removed. They are most commonly cut into shapes, and garnished attractively. A A variety of textures, shapes, colors, and a burst of flavor are appropriate for this finger-food item or very light lunch….
