Therese Busby, died 12th July 2020 Therese and Michael came to Waddesdon 29 years’ ago. They had four children and immersed themselves in village life.Tragically Therese suffered from a serious illness in recent years, earning the admiration and respect of us all, for her forbearance under these circumstances. It was extremely saddening to hear of the passing of Therese. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Michael and the family. Steve Hawkins. A Waddesdon man born and bred, Steve was never a man to seek attention. However, he was best known for his sporting prowess. As a young man he played in the village football team, and for a longer period in the cricket team and tennis club. He will be sadly missed by his friends and relatives, to whom we offer our condolences. Derek Lovell. Derek came to Waddesdon with his brother Tom as evacuees at the start of the Second World War.They lived with Mr and Mrs Levi Evans, and Derek stayed with them until he married village girl, Daisy. Derek was a time-served bricklayer and was never short of work. For a number of years he played football for the village team where he was valued as an accomplished mid-fielder. Daisy and Derek raised their family and have now both passed away. We offer our condolences to the family.

To the Editor My name is Maurice Fowler and I live in Western Australia. I am writing to inform you that Grace Edema [nee Griffin] passed away on the 13 July 2020 aged 92 in Perth WA. Grace was born in Waddesdon on the 20 June 1928 where her parents ran a small shop in the High Street. She married in Perth and lived the remainder of her life here. There is a mention of her in ‘Waddesdon Through the Ages’ on page 284. I was also born in Waddesdon and Grace nominated me to come to Australia in 1962. I think it would be relevant to mention her passing in the parish magazine. Regards, Maurice Fowler OBITUARY 5

Bryan George, died 26th July 2020 Bryan was born in Sheffield and was adopted by Ivy(Chalkie) and Percy (Tucker) George, as a very young boy. Bryan was a pleasant and reserved man. He worked at The Lion as a Kitchen Assistant for some years, and later went on to The Five Arrows until he became too ill to work. His final days were spent in The Florence Nightingale Hospice where he passed away on 26th July. The Waddesdon community have stepped up to help Bryan come back to Waddesdon Churchyard. I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of my childhood friend, Bryan. Marie Norris Community Thanks On behalf of all the villagers who knew Bryan George, I wish to express gratitude to Marie Norris who not only visited him during his illness at home and ensured he was later cared for in The Florence Nightingale Hospice, but with the help of others arranged a moving funeral service at the Watermead Crematorium. Those attending the service were invited back to The Lion where refreshments were provided by Annette and Matthew Webster. Norman Carr, 21st August 2020 To the Editor In your April 2018 edition, Norman Carr noted the passing of Uri Sella, a “Cedars Boy”. Earlier this week, on Monday, 27 July 2020, yet another adopted Waddesdon Man passed away. Hanan (Hans) Bodenheimer came to The Cedars in 1939 with Uri, his friend from Frankfurt. Like Uri, Hanan settled in Israel in the pioneering farm in Beit Hever and they were neighbours — and best friends — for many years. Their lifelong friendship was remarkable to all who were lucky enough to know them.Their boyish banter outlived their chronological ages by many years. Uri was at Hanan’s 90th birthday celebration and shared with the assembled guests the story of their journey from Nazi Germany to Israel via Waddesdon Manor. Hanan was 92 at the time of his passing. In 1973, Hanan married my widowed mother, Gloria, and took her three young sons under his wing. The four of us had recently immigrated to Israel from the United States. With Hanan joining our family we also gained an uncle in Uri. As such, my brothers and I are grateful for the home away from home that the Waddesdon community afforded these young men so that they could rebuild their lives after losing their families in the war. Sincerely, Ari Buchler 6 WADDESDON PARISH COUNCIL

Reopening the house Waddesdon Manor is delighted to be opening its doors to the public again from Wed 16 September, with a special, free, short, Covid-safe ground-floor visitor route. This is the first-time visitors will be invited into the Manor this year – in fact, the room displays hadn’t even been fully set when lockdown hit in March, so Waddesdon's rooms have been safely 'put to bed' for several months longer than usual. Lockdown and the need for creating a safe route for visitors, volunteers and staff has prompted the Manor’s team to think about showing different aspects of the House this autumn. The new route will have a clear one- way flow and so will avoid the pinch points of staircases and narrow doorways. This is an experiment for Waddesdon, so admission is free with pre-booked timed grounds tickets and will be offered on a first come basis between 11.30am-3.30pm. Those with Local Resident passes should select ‘Concessions’ from the options in the online booking https://waddesdon.seetickets.com/timeslots/waddesdon-grounds

Halloween for all the family We’ll be offering pumpkin carving, a Halloween trail and Spooky afternoon teas throughout October half term, Sat 24 Oct – Sun 1 Nov. Online booking will be available mid-September.

We’ve new opening hours this year as the event will be outdoors only – with a winter light trail, illuminations on the Manor, a synchronised light installation in the Coach House, lanterns and stars decorated by local schoolchildren, and the return of giant baubles in the Stables courtyard. We’ll be open Wed-Sun, 12noon-7.30pm Sat 14 Nov until Sun 3 Jan, with additional open days on Mondays, 21 and 28, and Tuesdays 22 and 29 December. (We will be closed Thur 23-Sat 26 Dec.) The Waddesdon Wednesday Club has a new look and a new direction… Could you be the New Manager? For people aged 70+ in Waddesdon,Wednesdays are set to get a whole lot more interesting Maybe you spend so much time looking after grandchildren you could use some adult conversation. Maybe you find yourself a bit lonely and in need of company. Maybe you just fancy a mid-week treat. The new look Wednesday Club is changing to meet the needs of all over 70s, and we’re looking for more members and volunteers. Plus, there’s an exciting job opportunity for a creative and positive person looking for a part-time position. A survey which came through your door last year asked about the provision available to the over 70s in Waddesdon, and gave us a clear message about what was working well and what needed to change. During the lockdown which has affected so much of this year, we have taken the time to instigate changes and register as a charity whilst being an integral part of the Waddesdon Support Group - delivering meals, arranging support phone calls from volunteers and providing home-based activities. The new look club will take more account of what members want, with space and support to devise activities and projects.Alongside activities like quizzes, exercise sessions and live music performances, we will seek to support new ideas suggested by groups of members like gardening/allotment projects, drama productions or local/family history research.Whatever your interest, be it a long-held passion or something new you’d like to try, we’d love to be able to make it happen. Or if you simply want to come along to meet with friends to chat over a brew and a biscuit then this will be the perfect place! Can you start-up with Covid19 around? For now, we won’t be able to meet in person, but we’d love to get up and running with some remote activities.Whether we are hosting an online club-quiz, delivering activities to your door or simply organising a phone call for a chat, we can certainly start to build this new community group, and as things progress we will strive to safely open our doors and welcome people along. So tell me more about this job opportunity Having accessed some initial funding, we now need a part-time manager to oversee the club. As a self-employed person, you will work 10 hours per week: 9am – 3pm on Wednesdays, with the remaining 4 hours to be worked flexibly to suit.We are offering £12.50 per hour and duties will include overseeing creative activities, financial and volunteer management, fundraising and most importantly hosting an enjoyable day for all. If you are interested in receiving a full job description, or would like ask a question or chat to one of the club’s trustees about the role, please e-mail [email protected] can also use this address if you would be interested in offering your services as a volunteer to help with an activity, or if you or someone you know over 70 would be interested in joining us. We’ll have more information in future newsletters about how you can be a part of the changes for the Wednesday Club in Waddesdon and the surrounding villages.

The Future of the Waddesdon Support Group The Waddesdon Support Group (COVID-19) was created on 15/03/20 by a group of residents who were very concerned about the effects of self-isolation and how the lockdown would impact vulnerable people. We believe we have created a positive and friendly group, more like a close family within the community and some of us discovered that our neighbours may be more fragile and worried than we expected and some of us found time for the residents that we may have not acknowledged before. We found new friends, we discovered how important the people around us are and we are all proud that we are part of this wonderful group of people that has done so much for others, such as: weekly shopping; medical prescription delivery, hot meals deliveries; friendly chats and letters. We would like to say BIG THANK YOU to ALL involved! It has been a pleasure to work with you! We are officially closing the COVID-19 Waddesdon Support Group, BUT we will continue our services as: Waddesdon Support Group We believe we will still be needed in our community Our phone number will stay the same 01296 532644 call us if you need any help or assistance The Waddesdon Support Group is not just for Coronavirus - it is here for as long as anyone needs us.We are planning to carry on and support the residents of Waddesdon. If you need help with: • shopping; • dropping off and collecting prescriptions; • gardening; • walking your dog or • maybe would you just like to have a regular chat with someone Call us, we are here to help! We have lots of volunteers so don’t think you’ll be inconveniencing us, we love to help! NEWS 33 Hot Meals & the Rothschild Foundation We find ourselves living in challenging times and in situations like this what matters the most is a caring Community and a good supportive Patron. We are very fortunate that we are living in Waddesdon. When the lockdown started, the Waddesdon Support Group was formed to help anybody in need. Shortly after that, we were contacted by the Rothschild Foundation to offer Hot Meals for vulnerable people in the village. We would like to give a big thank you to the Rothschild Foundation for recognising the needs of the community and for putting in place funding to provide hot meals for the elderly and vulnerable people. Thanks to the following: • Karen, who is acting on behalf of the Foundation and made sure everything was organised smoothly. The funds allowed five brilliant chefs from the Waddesdon Manor Restaurant to cook fresh meals three times a week • Ben, Craig, Harry, Daniel C & Daniel S, who were the wonderful chefs that cooked all the meals. They all worked tirelessly to prepare fresh and high quality meals for delivery on Monday,Wednesday and Friday from 27th April until 10th of July. In total, over 150 people benefitted from this service, which provided hot meals for them as well as the feeling of being cared. For some, this feeling of being looked after had even more meaning; we received phone calls and messages on a daily basis telling us how grateful they are and how much they appreciated it! The hot meals were delivered by several volunteers; one of the Waddesdon Support Group volunteers would pick up all the meals from the Manor restaurant and then bring them to the Five Arrows Car Park. From there, four volunteers loaded their cars with the meals and distributed them to the local people. Overall, 30 adult volunteers were involved with the meal distribution and two students from Waddesdon Secondary School. We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all people involved in the meal scheme from the very top of the Foundation to the troops on the ground. Thank you! The Baron’s Treat This article was written in 1979 and the reader needs to assume that viewpoint in order to keep some aspects in perspective. We are indebted to Alison Welsh for typing this up from the original hand written copy.

In 1874 Baron bought the Waddesdon Estate and soon commenced the building of Waddesdon Manor on Lodge Hill and the landscaping of the grounds. This work of course involved the employment of large numbers of craftsmen and labourers, who must have wondered at the size of the enterprise. Soon after Lodge Hill began to take on its new shape, the Baron initiated a tradition of opening the grounds to the public on one day in each summer, when his workers were also given the day off and provided with refreshments. The writer is not sure why the Baron came to this decision but a hundred years later it appears to have been a particularly brilliant and enlightened strategy, now known as “Industrial Relations”.The workers were encouraged to familiarise themselves with the project and to feel a part of it. Some modern day employers are just awakening to this way of motivating their staff! The open day for the public and workers became combined with the Annual Schools’ Treat and to this day is remembered as the Baron's Treat. By 1880 the tradition was established.Visitors in their hundreds and thousands were welcomed into the Manor grounds to enjoy the sights and sounds of the treat. For many of us it is difficult to imagine what could be so special that the whole population of Waddesdon and Upper Winchendon looked forward to so much. One of the dictionary definitions of the word 'treat' is 'thing that gives rare pleasure' and we would be at a loss to provide a treat that would be sure to give 'rare pleasure' to everyone each year. However, reports indicate that this was achieved without exception. In 1897, (the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee) there is no doubt people were in the mood for celebrations. From early morning, wagons, carts and carriages were converging on Waddesdon for the Baron's Treat, which was held on the Tuesday following August Monday. The village streets were packed with horse drawn vehicles and cyclists. Enterprising villagers were earning themselves extra cash by providing parking spaces for them. Other villagers had put out tables and chairs in their front gardens and sold refreshments. This was Waddesdon's Day and by now the inhabitants knew how to make the most of it. The organisation of the Treat left little to chance. In order to take part as a villager, one had to have a ticket which ensured the holder would enjoy special privileges. Bygone Days 16 35

The distribution of the tickets was largely carried out via the schools. Some time prior to the event each child was asked to find out how many persons would be residing in the family home on the Treat day, and tickets would be issued accordingly. The totals now gave the caterers the necessary information for preparing the tea. (Messrs Dodwell and Franklin did the catering on alternate years). Large numbers of men and women were employed as waiters and waitresses. There are some excellent photographs of some of the groups of helpers. Once again via the schools, each village child was issued with six tickets, entitling the holder to free rides on the various fairground attractions, which were specially hired for the occasion. Races for the children were organised, and the winners were presented with useful prizes such as money boxes or toys, which were treasured for many years. In 1898 the Baron died and was succeeded by his sister, Miss Alice de Rothschild, who to the relief of the children and others, carried on the traditions of the Annual Treat until the outbreak of war in August 1914. It is the treats of this period that are still remembered by some of the older villagers today. The Treat Day was changed to the Thursday before August Monday - having the effect of reducing somewhat the size of the crowd of visitors. However those who experienced the Treats remember the huge crowds of people arriving by 'all manner of means' but most of all they remember the anticipation as they lined up outside each of the two schools, the Waddesdon Temperance Band at the head of one group of children and the 'Old' Band at the head of the other group. At a given signal the parade moved off, marching up the village and into the entrance of the Manor grounds. When the parade reached the field containing Spring Hill, the columns swung into the field and the children made for the fair which was waiting for them at the foot of the hill. The races and tea were taken in the cricket field whilst the bands alternately entertained the crowd with suitable selections and airs. Later in the evening the bands carried on playing but now the music was for dancing on the grass, which must have finished the day in fine style for young and old alike. The last Annual Treat was celebrated just days before the outbreak of the Great War, and in a way this was a fitting end to the tradition, for things were never to be the same again. The Treats were loved and remembered by all who experienced them, and provided highlights in a golden period of Waddesdon's history. Norman Carr August 2020

38 FROM THE MINISTER

Hello! I’d like to introduce myself – I am Reverend Caroline and I am the new vicar of Waddesdon,Westcott and Upper Winchendon. My family and I have recently moved into the Rectory in Waddesdon, having previously lived in Hemel Hempstead, where I have been Curate in the parish of St Mary and St Paul, Hemel Hempstead over the last three years. As you can imagine, due to the Coronavirus situation;the conclusion of my curacy, the selection and interview process, my leaving and starting has all been rather disrupted and difficult. However, I am delighted to say, we are here and starting to settle nicely into the Rectory.Whilst I do not begin my official duties until after my licensing service on 28th September, I have started to go out and about to introduce myself and I may have said hello to some of you already. I am so excited to be beginning my ministry here with you. A little bit about me and my family. I had a long career in secondary education, teaching French for some 25 years before responding to the call to ordained ministry. I trained on the Eastern Region Ministry course whilst working and bringing up our three boys. My husband Chris, previously worked in law, banking and latterly, before his early retirement, as an officer of the diocese of St.Albans. Our sons are all growing up now - Nick is currently studying in Denmark, Jonny will be going into his final year at Coventry university and Bobby, our youngest is starting at Buckinghamshire College in Aylesbury this month. Enough about us – what am I excited about in my new role as Vicar of Waddesdon, Westcott and Upper Winchendon? I am passionate about outreach to the community and making your parish churches central to that community. The three beautiful and historic parish churches each with their own distinctive characters have been a mainstay in these communities for hundreds of years and have played an important part for generations in all those important life events – christenings, marriages, funerals – in times of celebration and sadness. At Christmas, Easter and Harvest………. Whether you usually attend church or not, the church is there for you.As you look at the wonderful buildings, or maybe hear the ringing of a church bell, you are reminded that prayers are being said for you in this place and have been continually over the years. I feel that , never has the need for community, unity and prayer been so important to us, and we want to continue to be there for you and to be as relevant to you now as has ever been. I am passionate about working with schools and our young people and am delighted with the prospect of working in partnership with our village schools. I look forward to welcoming all to the churches and being a visible presence in the community. We have been living in the strangest of times, these last few months. What Covid 19 has taught me personally, is to take joy in the small things. If nothing else, lockdown gave many of us the opportunity to stop and stare. When the world shrinks, things become more beautiful, more striking. When you can only leave the house for an hour a day, small things become more poignant. I found myself noticing the flowers, the sky, the sounds and the smells. At home, suddenly due to enforced captivity under PARISH CHURCH SERVICES lockdown, my teenage sons were suddenly around more often, with nowhere more interesting to go (!) We were given the precious gift of some family time and some wonderful conversations which I think they would normally not have hung around long enough to have. Jesus had the ability to notice the small things, often telling stories about small items such as a mustard seed, a tiny lost coin, or a fig growing at the roadside, and used these to point to the splendour of God’s kingdom. Just as the busyness of daily life can easily get in the way of noticing the small things, it can also get in the way of seeing God’s purpose and work in our lives. As the world expands again for us as we slowly lift out of the restrictions of the pandemic over the next few months, let us continue to find joy in the small things. As from 28th September, please do not hesitate to contact me for whatever reason, for pastoral or spiritual care, to enquire about a wedding, christening or funeral or just to introduce yourself and say hello on 01296-655069 or at [email protected] With every blessing The Revd Caroline Wainman
