A Tribute to Rex Evans All who knew him will have been saddened to learn of the death of lifelong villager Rex Evans, and I am sure everyone mirrors our words of condolence to his wife Rosalie and his grieving family. I record below something of my memories of Rex. Rex has been a well-known resident in the village for more than eighty years. His grandfather and father were consecutively the respected proprietors of Evans Garage at the site now occupied by Vale Tyres, and with this background Rex grew up steeped in the disciplines of motor engineering and the provision of good service. As a young man, Rex’s past-times included motorcycle racing, and the regular visits of Rex and his wife Rosalie to The Isle of Man TT Races, influenced their choice of name for their son, Braddan (after Braddan Bridge which features on the TT circuit). Over the years the family made numerous friends from the racing motorcycle fraternity, some of them world renowned.Yet Rex quietly carried on the family tradition of working in vehicle maintenance. An extremely competent yet modest man, whose views were respected by all. Most villagers will remember Rex regularly mowing and caring for the village War Memorial, a task he voluntarily undertook at the demise of the local branch of the Royal British Legion. I well recall asking Rex about this at the time, and was touched by his reasoning; that the men listed on the memorial had given their all, and his work to maintain their memorial illustrated his gratitude. That was my view of Rex Evans, an exemplary man. Norman Carr 2nd January 2021 MACHIN, Kenneth William Passed away at home on 13th December 2020 surrounded by his family. Devoted husband to Norah, loving Father to Alacoque,Wanda, Helen & Robert.A sincere and gentle man.We will miss him so much. Due to current restrictions there will be a private funeral held at Crematorium. Donations in memory of Ken may be made to The Salvation Army. MANY THANKS to all those involved in the organisation and distribution of the Waddesdon Newsletter. Without whose help this year a monthly newsletter delivered to every home in the parishes of Waddesdon, Fleet Marston, Westcott, and Over Winchendon wouldn’t have been possible. Parish Council News January 2021

We hope you enjoyed the Christmas break although it was considerably different this year. By the time you receive this Newsletter it will be 2021. It would be wonderful to say the pain of 2020 is behind us but that will surely not be the case.Whatever 2021 brings please rest assured we will be working hard to continue our support and we ask that you continue to observe the guidelines as you all did so beautifully last year.We hope the vaccination programme will soon be well under way and we can aim for some normality and an opportunity to enjoy our village to the fullest come the summer. All of the Parish Councillors would like to take this opportunity to wish you a healthy and happy New Year. Community Centre: The car park barrier has been installed and will be operational from 2nd January. We ask that you don t park in the overflow car park and you leave one disabled parking space for the exclusive use of the Community Centre. We thank you for your co-operation, the Community Centre is a brilliant asset and we are getting more and more bookings. Waddesdon Vision: We are delighted to be creating a new vision for the fields north of the Community Centre at the end of Frederick Street. We would like to use potential funding to create a new green space to improve the health, happiness, and inclusivity of the local community. The vision is to celebrate the Waddesdon community and create a better space for the whole village to enjoy. Some of these ideas include a new fitness track, nature trail, play areas, a crazy golf course, a grass amphitheatre, wildflower meadows, more allotments, and a community memory garden. We will be delivering leaflets that illustrate our ideas in early January and want to stress that at this stage they are plans for general discussion. Look out for posters in the local community facilities and shops too.We would love to hear what you think and whether you have further ideas for this space! Please tell us what you think by the 31st January 2021 by emailing the [email protected] Street Hygiene: Dog fouling continues to be a problem around the village. Please remember this is an offence and you can be fined, we are monitoring this and we do have ways to identify those perpetrators. There are plenty of dog bins around and in fact you can now dispose of the waste in ordinary litter bins. Can we also remind horse owners to be mindful of any mess they leave behind. Not only is animal waste a health hazard but is incredibly anti-social.We would also ask that you are mindful of general waste and litter as we are seeing an increase around the village. The Waddesdon Wombles do an amazing job keeping this in check but please everyone help to play your part in keeping Waddesdon tidy. Finance: The draft budget for 2021/22 has been agreed and the precept set £108,028 (an increase of 2%).This equates to £146.97 pa for a band D house (£1.63 increase). WADDESDON PARISH COUNCIL 7

Grounds closed until 6 Jan It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that since Waddesdon was put into Tier 4 on 20 December, we have taken the decision to cancel the remaining days of Christmas at Waddesdon and the Winter Light evening events throughout January. However, the slightly brighter news is that we will be opening Waddesdon’s Grounds to give local people an opportunity for exercise in the fresh air from 6 January. All tickets will need to be booked online in advance for a timed admission, local resident pass holders and National Trust members will have free admission. We have adjusted the timing of these January days to Waddesdon's full Wednesday to Sunday, and the timing will be from 12 noon to 7.30pm. We have reduced numbers of visitors yet further, and unfortunately are unable to run our shuttle buses due to covid restrictions. During January, visitors virtually all the Winter Light experience - the When You Wish Upon A Star trail down Miss Alice’s Drive and the Giant Pea-light Baubles at the Stables throughout the day. From dusk, our Winter Light trail and Manor façade illuminations will brighten up your visit and there is no 'event charge' for this. Note: there are no separate timed admissions for the Winter Light trail – please respect other visitors by maintaining social distance and the Tier 4 rules about only interacting with members of your household. Toilets will be open and takeaway outdoor food and drink will be available at both the Manor and the Stables, 12noon-7pm.

We hope to welcome you in January and wish you a very happy new year! LOCAL NEWS 9

36 Bygone Days 49 The Origins of Quainton Road Station In 1835 Sir Henry Verney of , called a meeting at the White Hart Inn, Aylesbury, to enlist support for a railway linking Aylesbury with London and Birmingham.Amongst those involved in this early initiative was another important local landowner, the Duke of and Chandos, whose residence was Wotton House. As a result of this meeting a branch line connecting Aylesbury to the London and Birmingham Railway at , was constructed. It was commissioned in 1839 and enabled the transport of goods and passengers by rail, from Aylesbury to London and Birmingham. This map shows the route taken by the Aylesbury & Buckingham Railway to connect Aylesbury with via Quainton Road station. Due west of this station at a distance of around four miles lies Wotton House, the seat of the Duke of Buckingham, Chairman of the A&BR. A railway connecting to was constructed in 1850.This line had a junction situated between Winslow and (Claydon Junction later re-named Verney Junction), facilitating a branch line to via Buckingham. In 1860 Sir Henry Verney and the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos were instrumental in the formation of the Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway Company, (A&BR).The purpose of the A&BR was to build and operate a railway connecting the Claydon Junction, (later named Verney Junction), with Aylesbury. The most economical route for this railway would have been an almost straight line through the “ Gap”, but the Duke of Buckingham, Chairman of the company, was able to influence the decision in favour of his plans for the future. The Duke intended to construct a tramway from his estate at Wotton to connect with the Aylesbury and Buckingham railway. The resulting convoluted route taken for the A&BR fulfilled the Duke's requirement and a station on the Quainton Road became an important element in the plan. The planned Tramway from his estate at Wotton could now almost entirely lie on his land, and the Duke would not require a Parliamentary Bill in order to proceed. The A&BR line was laid from Verney Junction, first to Winslow Road Station, then to Road Station, on to Quainton Road Station, and finally to Aylesbury in 1868. Here the A&BR met the Great Western line (constructed in 1863), which connected with London Paddington, via High Wycombe. In 1871 the Wotton Tramway was completed, connecting Wotton with Quainton Road station. Norman Carr December 2020 38 FROM THE MINISTER

Happy New Year! After the year we have had, I am sure many of us were quite glad to say good riddance to 2020. I, for one, am looking forward to the prospect of a much better year ahead– a bright new year, a bright new start. Hopefully! Who could have ever predicted all that was ahead, as we blithely celebrated the turn of 2020 last year.Who had even heard of Zoom or the terms “social distancing” or the dreaded C words – “Covid” or “Coronavirus? Who knows what 2021 will hold? I am certain that once the vaccine programme is well underway and people feel confident about going out again, there will be much to catch up on and to celebrate. All those postponed weddings! I predict I will be very busy in 2021 with those! We may actually get to watch Wimbledon and dare I say, go on holiday. In the Old Testament,we read the long and perilous story of God’s chosen people, the people of Israel in their tortuous journey to the promised land. They were defeated and taken captive by their enemies, they were exiled in a foreign land away from home for years. They endured some really rough times. In Isaiah 43:18-19, God speaks to his people:“Do not remember the former things nor consider the things of old. See, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not be aware of it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” God is speaking to His people concerning a bright new future and a promise of hope. I really love an early 20th century poem called the Gate of the Year by Minnie Louise Haskins. It goes like this: And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” Every blessing for a hopeful and joyful 2021 The Revd Caroline Wainman PARISH CHURCH NOTICEBOARD 39
