Welcome to Our Weeklong Celebration of Undergraduate Research At URC ’07 A welcome to participants and attendees elcome to our weeklong celebration of undergraduate research at the University of New Hampshire. Now in its eighth year, the UNH Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) showcases the remarkable Wwork of our students and their faculty mentors. We take pride in their efforts. Undergraduate research and discovery are hallmarks of a University of New Hampshire education. Extraordinary learning opportunities vary from field studies and empirical research to outreach scholarship and creative works. Our students have the valuable opportunity to partner with faculty and discover the intricacies of their disciplines firsthand, thereby enriching the academic experience and gaining essential skills for pursuing graduate study and meaningful careers. There are also benefits for the faculty, who report that the teamwork essential to these efforts strengthens J. Bonnie Newman instruction and lays the groundwork for future challenges. This conference provides University of New Hampshire undergraduates with a professional venue to present their important research findings. We encourage you to read their posters, listen to their presentations, and ask questions of the student researchers. You will be impressed with their answers and the depth and breadth of their knowledge and understanding. Sincerely, J. Bonnie Newman, Interim President John D. Aber John D. Aber, Vice President for Research 2007 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH CONFERENCE • Measuring the value of the Undergraduate Research Conference Last year, the UNH Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) evaluation committee asked URC participants to complete a survey in order to gain more insight into the URC student experience. Responses indicated student participation in undergraduate research was a highlight of their undergraduate experience at UNH and had a significant and positive effect on their post-graduate experience. URC participation increased student confidence and presentation skills, and in many cases influenced their graduate school and/or career choices. Participants also reported a sense of pride in being able to plan, implement, and report their research to peers, faculty and family members. For many, it was one of the more memorable experiences of their undergraduate career. One student stated: “Sharing my research at the URC and talking with those who attended allowed me to expand certain ideas of my project, giving it greater depth and helping to determine its importance in the bigger picture.” The students overwhelmingly attributed the success of their research and the resulting URC presentation to collaboration with a faculty mentor. One student wrote: “My faculty mentor has been the most influential person in my undergraduate career. He has provided me with more experience, knowledge, and opportunity than any class could offer. I am completely indebted to him for his support and confidence in me.” The students also reported that faculty mentors play an important role in providing connections and opportunities for students to enter graduate programs or the job market. The survey showed that the Undergraduate Research Conference brings the research “My faculty mentor has been experience full circle by providing a professional venue for students to present their work the most influential person in and engage in thoughtful discussions with other members of the University community. my undergraduate career. Excerpted from the manuscript under review titled Intellectual Growth for Undergraduate Students and Faculty: Evaluation Results from an Undergraduate Research Conference, He has provided me with authored by Sharyn Potter, Eleanor Abrams, and Lisa Townson. more experience, knowledge, and opportunity than any class could offer. I am completely indebted to him for his support and confidence.” • UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE URC ’07 Contents Calendar of events 4 Friday, April 7 Events Map 5 Breakfast with UNH Interim President J. • Bab Ii “Menarikan Sang Liyan” : Feminisme Dalam Industri Musik
BAB II “MENARIKAN SANG LIYAN”i: FEMINISME DALAM INDUSTRI MUSIK “A feminist approach means taking nothing for granted because the things we take for granted are usually those that were constructed from the most powerful point of view in the culture ...”

OECD/IMHE project Supporting the Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Regional Development Self-Evaluation Report: Busan, Republic of Korea Jang-soo Ryu, Sung-joon Paik, Dae-shik Lee, Hyun-joong Jun, Eui-soo Cho and Jong-han Kim January 2006 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This self-evaluation report has been created with the help and support of regional partners such as universities in the Busan region, the central government, the regional government, and businesses. There are a total of six authors to this report including a regional co-ordinator and their expertise cover a wide range of fields including economics, education, and sociology. This report would not have been possible without the active help from our regional partners. In preparing the questionnaire the authors referred to many materials, including past OECD reports, and at the same time reflected Busan’s regional characteristics. Questionnaires were distributed to twelve universities in the Busan region to research and analyze each university’s role in regional development. Representatives from all twelve universities participated in the questionnaire review meeting and gave outstanding opinions, and the researchers actively reflected those opinions in creating the final questionnaire. Everybody from the Busan region universities gave sincere answers to the question and provided much data. After creating the self-evaluation report, the authors collected opinions from the regional steering committee, and the regional steering committee authorized the report as Busan’s self-evaluation report. The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MOE) and Busan Metropolitan City gave unreserved support in creating this report. Not only did the MOE judge this project as a means to accurately identify university’s roles for regional development so far, but had plans to promote similar researches in other regions, based on this report.

  • BSE Controversy in Korea
BSE controversy in Korea Hyun Sook Cho Department of Science and Technology Studies Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University College London 1 I, Hyun Sook Cho, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis 2 Abstract This thesis has examined the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) controversy in Korea in terms of civic epistemology conceptualised by Jasanoff. The Korean BSE controversy occurred as a result of uncertainty over BSE being mobilised within complex political and economic contexts between Korea and the US, particularly over the issue of the import of US beef after 2003. The complexity of the interests impeded the Korean government from adopting a clear position on BSE risk in beef, and thus led to public distrust and massive public protests in 2008. The controversy demonstrated what I have called an authoritarian character of civic epistemology in Korea, such as the dominance of the government in knowledge production, public accountability limited to procedural form, and dependence on foreign authority. It can be ascribed to the traces of the development process which had been led by a powerful state and which relied on importing advanced countries’ knowledge and skills. However, simultaneously, the controversy showed that this civic epistemology is in transition, challenged by a growing civil society and an increasing demand for public participation. In light of this, rather than a one-off phenomenon, the BSE controversy in Korea could be defined as a symptom of tension caused by friction between the ingrained approach to policy-making and increasing public awareness of democracy.
