The Korean Wave As a Localizing Process: Nation As a Global Actor in Cultural Production
THE KOREAN WAVE AS A LOCALIZING PROCESS: NATION AS A GLOBAL ACTOR IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Ju Oak Kim May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Department of Journalism Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University © Copyright 2016 by Ju Oak Kim All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. -

Bab Ii “Menarikan Sang Liyan” : Feminisme Dalam Industri Musik
BAB II “MENARIKAN SANG LIYAN”i: FEMINISME DALAM INDUSTRI MUSIK “A feminist approach means taking nothing for granted because the things we take for granted are usually those that were constructed from the most powerful point of view in the culture ...” -

Musical Development of Young Children of the Chinese Diaspora in London
Musical development of young children of the Chinese diaspora in London Yen-Ting Wu Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD at UCL Institute of Education 2018 Declaration I, Yen-Ting Wu, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Signature: Date: 1 Acknowledgements My sincere gratitude is expressed to: Professor Graham Welch, for his continuous guidance, support, encouragement and inspiration throughout my research journey and thesis writing. Professor Adam Ockelford and Angela Voyajolu, for their insightful discussions with me on the SoI-EY framework which was applied in this study. The participant families in this study, for their generous commitment and precious contribution to this study. My family, for their continuous support in every respect of my life. My friends in the UK, Taiwan, and other parts of the world, for their encouragement and companionship throughout my studies. The Taiwanese government, for the award of scholarship that financially supported my studies in the UK. The Buddha, for his blessings and spiritual inspiration in my life. 2 Abstract The thesis investigates the musical behaviour and development of young, pre-school children of the Chinese diaspora in London. There has been rapid growth in the Chinese population in the UK over the last three decades, yet little is known about of the nature and significance of the diaspora in young children’s musical development. Two theoretical frameworks were used to frame the nature of the research. Firstly, pre- school musical behaviour in the home was investigated through the Sounds of Intent in the Early Years framework (Ockelford, 2015; Voyajolu & Ockelford, 2016). -

Undergraduate Research Conference Spring 2020 College of Fine Arts and Communication
Undergraduate Research Conference Spring 2020 College of Fine Arts and Communication MACY BARTELS College of Fine Arts and Communication Music as Protest for Equality During the 1960s and Present-Day Society Abstract: This poster will display the use of music as a protest against inequalities and racism, focusing on two artists from the civil movement and the present day. Childish Gambino and his song “This Is America” (2018) and Nina Simone with her song “Mississippi Goddam” (1964). Multiple scholarly articles exist on each music composition and its interpretations, yet no research compares these two particular pieces and the significance of their similarities. In “Mississippi Goddam” (1964), written during the Civil Rights era, Nina Simone expresses her discontent with the events and mistreatment of African Americans in the United States. Similarily, Childish Gambino’s song “This Is America” (2018) displays racial issues of modern society. The similarities between the songs will be used to display not only how African American artists use their music to protest mistreatment but to also emphasize how these specific songs exhibit the continuation of inequality in society from the 1960s to now. My research reveals the consistent unwillingness of American Society to become equal and prejudice-free. Additionally, it shows how both artists used their lyrics to display to the audience what it was like living in society as an African American during the time the song was written. Regardless of a more than a 50-year difference between the two songs, the racial issues in “Mississippi Goddam” are similar to racial issues seen in “This Is America”. -
The Pyeongchang Olympics and Solving the Korean Crisis with Goodwill Posted on 02 Mar·Ch 2018 Tags
Received by NSD/FAR.t\ Registration Unit 09/26/2018 3:32:49 PM The PyeongChang Olympics and Solving the Korean Crisis with Goodwill Posted On 02 Mar·ch 2018 Tags. diplomacy By Casey Robinson In January, the South Korean government extended its hand to the Kim regime by offering high, level talks to d.iscuss North Korea's possible participation at the Winter Olympics, to which the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un responded positively and ordered a reopening of the Panmunjom hotline. The international community was generally optimistic towards this development. Even President Trump, who has shown a willingness to use force to protect American interests, commented that inter-Korean talks are a good thing and even suggested his willingness to speak with Kim Jong-un himself. Many acts of goodwill came from these high-level talks. North and South Korea agreed to participate as a unified team at the Winter Olympics under one flag with inter-Korean team practices in the North. In additfon, the United States rnay have also displayed a sign of goodwill by decreasing funding for human rights and freedom of information programs in North Korea. Decreasing its budget towards these issues may show the North Korean government thatthe United States is potentially no longer be interested in undermining the Kim regime. However, the Moon administration's attempt at rapprochement with North Korea may only be good for the short0 term, until the closing of the Winter Olympics. Without the incentive of sports diplomacy, all three governments may likely return to provocations as there is no sense of confidence in their respective adversary. -
