As part of our continued commitment to sustainability, management of resources and focus on providing the highest quality student provision, it is produced on recycled paper and is a summary report only – further details of the AUCB’s activities may be found on our website aucb.ac.uk Chairman’s Introduction The academic year 2010-11 was challenging for all Higher Education institutions as the government’s planned changes to HE funding were announced and began to be implemented. The headline movement away from grant funding to student fees provided through the Student Loan Company was well signposted, but with all such structural change the devil was in the detail, and there was a great deal of detail, much of it altering as we progressed through the academic year. Sadly the unique position of specialist Nicholas Durbridge institutions often appeared to be considered after the event, as Chairman with the late realisation that recruitment by ‘A’ level results is not a criteria by which we select our students. -
B.RG.S. Young Engineers the 'Engineering in Education' Scheme
B.RG.S. Young Engineers The 'Engineering in Education' scheme is a nation-wide organisation, founded 0 to enable LVI students in Great Britain the opportunity to gain engineering experience in typical industrial situations. Due to the popularity and the demands of such a scheme, both the schools and students who wished to take part were selected to fonn a team rich in motivation, practicality and initiative. For the first time in the school's history, B.R.G.S. was fortunate enough to be one of the nine establishments in Lancashire to be( selected to fonn a young engineers team, sponsored by Lucas Automotive, BumIey. The team was comprised of four individuals who, in order to be selected, underwent rigorous selection processes and eventually comprised Helen 'the vice' Ashton, Philip 'hacksaw' Ham, Chris 'electronics' Lord and Richard 'the tool' Seedhouse. The team was asked to solve a problem which was occuning at the Lucas Plant in Burnley. During the assembly of relays, one of the components - the resistors - which are mounted on feed paper, occasionallyjams the 'Dixon 6' assembly machines. This is caused by folds created in the feed paper due to their packaging. Machine stoppages are costly, time wasting and a nuisan~e, and it was therefore desirable to prevent this from happening. In light of this brief: the team, with the aid of professional advice from on-site engineers at Lacas set out to tackle the problem. After many hours of research, planning, development and gruelling labour, the result was a sophisticated. prototype reeling mechanism, which removed the kinks created in the resistor feed paper by tension createrl through rollers. -

The project asks AUB Alumni and friends of the institution for their advice for success in the creative industries, which is celebrated through a series of illustrations created by AUB Awards 16 Alumnus Natasha Durley. Chairman’s Introduction 4 6 Roger Laughton CBE The Arts University Bournemouth is one of a small number of specialist institutions whose subject offer falls Chairman of Governors exclusively within the disciplines of arts, design, media and performance. Taken as a whole, these specialist universities have more than two thousand years of experience in teaching, learning and research in the subjects they offer. For our part, since our foundation in 1883, we have remained committed to a belief in the value of specialist provision and its outcomes in student achievement, staff research and industry engagement. There is growing public appreciation of the value of the subjects we offer in arts, design, media and performance to the UK creative sector. The creative industries are the fastest growing part of the UK economy and contribute significantly to national income and employment. -

Industry Insight: extended Vanessa Denza, buyer for the 21 Shop at Woollands, founder of Denza International consultancy and founder of Graduate Fashion Week, complete interview. Vanessa’s interview appears in abridged form in Chapter 1, page 29. How did you get into Fashion? I took my ‘A’ levels early and there was nothing in those days at all for somebody like me to study unless I was going to do an academic subject and I knew that I wanted to go into something much more creative, although I am not a designer. And it so happened that my Godfather was the head of Condé Nast, Reggie Williams, so he said why don’t you go and do six months in Paris with Vogue, we will set it up. So I arrived and one of those wonderful French women met me and she said “your typing is disgraceful, we cannot have you,” so that was it, I was out. She said “I think you sell very well,” so she arranged for me to go unpaid as an intern to Jacques Fath, after Jacques Fath had died. The designer there was Phillipe Giborgé who became very well known, and I was put into the new boutique with the ready-to-wear collection and that was being run by the woman who had been head of fashion at Galleries Lafayette, the Princesse de Polignac. Because I had been to a French school in England, my French was pretty fluent, so that was fine, and I was selling to all and sundry including ballerinas who would say things like “don’t put me in front of that mirror I look so fat.” So at the age of 18 I had to learn all about that kind of thing. -
