ARCHIPELAGO 3 Vol. 2 No. 4, Winter 1998/99 Contributors Henry Martin was born in Philadelphia and received degrees in English literature from Bowdoin College and New York University, where he also studied Romance languages. He translates contemporary Italian literature and regularly contributes as a critic to a number of international art magazines, including Art News and Flash Art. In addition to his translations of Anna Maria Ortese (THE IGUANA; A MUSIC BEHIND THE WALL, Vols. One and Two) and Giorgio Manganelli (ALL THE ERRORS), he has written extensively about art, including two volumes in collaboration with the Italian artist Gianfranco Baruchello, HOW TO IMAGINE and WHY DUCHAMP, both published by McPherson & Company. Henry Martin lives with his wife, the artist Betty Skuber, and their son, John-Daniel, in the mountains of southern Tyrol not far from Bolzano, Italy. Maria Negroni <[email protected]> was born in Argentina in 1951. She holds a PhD in Latin American literature from Columbia University, and has received Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships. Three books of her poems have been published by Libros de Tierra Firme (Buenos Aires): DE TANTO DESOLAR (1985), PER/CANTA (1989) and LA JAULA BAJO EL TRAPO (1991). Two collections of poetry, ISLANDIA and EL VIAJE DE LA NOCHE were published, respectively, in 1994, by Monte Avila Editores (Caracas) and Editorial Lumen (Barcelona). Bilingual editions are forthcoming of ISLANDIA (Station Hill Press) and LA JAULA BAJO EL TRAPO/CAGE UNDERCOVER (Sun & Moon Press). She has also received a National Book Award for EL VIAJE DE LA NOCHE (which also was first runner-up at the Princeton University Poetry Series) and was first runner-up for the Planeta Prize 1997, for her novel EL SUEÑO de URSULA. She directs a poetry magazine edited in Buenos Aires, Abyssinia. A selection from EL VIAJE DE LA NOCHE/NIGHT JOURNEY appeared in our inaugural issue. Anna Maria Ortese was born in Naples, in 1914. Her first book, a collection of stories published in 1937, was acclaimed as the work of a major new magical realist. (The critical phrase “magical realism" was largely the invention of the writer Massimo Bontempelli, who is also credited with having discovered Ortese.) She has written more than a dozen volumes of stories, novels, and essays, and has been the recipient of Italian literary prizes, among them Strega, the Premio Viareggio, and the Fiuggi. Although for fifty years her writing reached relatively small audiences, her most recent works have appeared on the Italian bestseller lists. In 1986, her novel, THE IGUANA, appeared in an English translation by Henry Martin, published by McPherson & Company <www.mcphersonco.com>, who also publish two volumes of Ortese's stories under the title A MUSIC BEHIND THE WALL, the second volume of which appeared in 1998. "The Great Street," a story, appeared in Archipelago, Vol. 1, No. 1. Anna Maria Ortese died in 1998. Anne Twitty’s <[email protected]> translations of the book-length poems of Maria Negroni are forthcoming in the bilingual editions CAGE UNDERCOVER/LA JAULA BAJO EL TRAPO (Sun & Moon Press) and ISLANDIA (Station Hill Press). A selection of her translations from Negroni’s ISLANDIA appeared in The Paris Review (Spring 1994); another appeared in Mandorla. She has also translated the Cuban poet Magali Alabau (HERMANA/SISTER, Editorial Betania, 1992; LIEBE, La torre de Papel, 1993). Anne Twitty was for some years editor of the Epicycle section of Parabola, which published her essays on myth, creation, and memory. Henry Martin t the beginning of the First World War — the period in which I was born — social discrepancies, in Italy as in many other parts of the world, were not, I Abelieve, as painful as they are today. Above all, they were not so conspicuous. My family, a total of nine persons which included six children, lived a highly modest life, practically in poverty, in the south-central region of the country and was surely no stranger to economic hardship, but we didn’t really notice it. At least the children didn’t. So even in spite of having been born into very uncomfortable circumstances, often sad, and marked above all by a great void of culture and security, I wasn’t aware of it, and perhaps didn’t suffer from it, up until adolescence. And at that point, the center of my life came to be occupied by other problems, which quickly coalesced into a single problem: the problem of self-expression.

This is a very great novel, but one that needs a context in both the past and in so-called post-9/11 America. We can divide the contemporary American novel into two traditions, or two social classes. The Tough Guy tradition comes up from Fenimore Cooper, with a touch of Poe, through Melville, Faulkner and Hemingway. The Savant tradition comes from Hawthorne, especially through Henry James, Edith Wharton and Scott Fitzgerald. You could argue that the latter is liberal, east coast/New York, while the Tough Guys are gothic, reactionary, nihilistic, openly religious, southern or fundamentally rural. The Savants' blood line (curiously unrepresentative of Americans generally) has gained undoubted ascendancy in the literary firmament of the US. Upper middle class, urban and cosmopolitan, they or their own species review themselves. The current Tough Guys are a murder of great, hopelessly masculine, undomesticated writers, whose critical reputations have been and still are today cruelly divergent, adrift and largely unrewarded compared to the contemporary Savant school. In literature as in American life, success must be total and contrasted "failure" fatally dispiriting. But in both content and technical riches, the Tough Guys are the true legislators of tortured American souls.

One of these students, Nicoletta Romano, continued to study these questions with the support of the Lloyd Gardner Fellowship Program 12 ALUMNI REUNION & NEWS in Leadership and Social Policy, under the guidance of Professor Welch. Another 16 FACULTY NEWS Italian major, Mihaela Sanderson, was selected as the author of the “Best Poster” for back cover the Humanities portion of the Aresty Symposium, the result of a research project DEPARTMENT INITIATIVES developed with the support of her mentor Prof. Andrea Baldi. This is the second consecutive time that a student majoring in Italian is recognized in this way. There have been some changes in our department, and we miss our former friends and colleagues, our beloved Carol Feinberg, our kindhearted Robin Rogers, and our former language coordinator Daniele de Feo.

    May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays.

Travel Literature in Italy ITAL-UA 9283 Wednesdays, 10:30-1:15 pm Classroom Location TBA Class Description: This course, taught in English, will focus on the representation of travel experience in Modern Italian Literature and its related media, especially 20th Century Cinema, Modernist and Futurist Art, underground comics, and the way they intersect with each other. Its aim is to offer the student a new pattern in the succession of tendencies, movements and mass cultures, with a broader perspective, spanning from the 19th Century Post-Unification Italian culture and literature (Manzoni) to the 1980s “cult” writers and cartoonists and literary groups from the 1990s and 2000s (Tondelli, Ammanniti, Pazienza). With this pattern the student will be introduced to the dynamics of journey in the Italian culture and literature: not only a spatial journey abroad (in America with Calvino, The Orient with Tabucchi, Africa with Pasolini and Celati) or inland (especially the South of Carlo Levi), but also intellectually, politically and spiritually speaking: a path between the Wars (with Malaparte and Levi), the economic Boom, the Generation of ’68 and ’77, a psychedelic trip in New Age trends, and the so called Pulp Generation or Young Cannibals. To foster the student’s feedback one Site-visit will be proposed (at the Fondazione Casamonti in Florence) and a special Field Trip will be scheduled in Milan, to visit the new “Book Pride” Book Fair and interview a contemporary Italian writer and/or translator and/or editor at Verso Bookshop. Both sections are united by reflecting the difficulties of utilizing past experiences to produce a fixed understanding of lives or provide predictability for the future; all lives and events are in flux and in need of continual reimagining or recharting to provide meaning. The poetry includes a variety of forms, including free verse, sonnets, blank verse, sapphics, rhymed couplets, stanzaic forms including mad-song stanzas and rhymed tercets, variations on regular forms, and nonce forms. Poems are predominantly lyrical expressions, though many employ narrative strategies to a greater or lesser degree. The first of four units begins with a long-poem sequence which serves as prologue by examining general issues of loss through a Freudian lens.

Hubele Classical epic models remind the reader of the sadness, futility, and sterility of living in the past; chapter one of this study illustrates, however, that from Cotton Mather to Walt Whitman, American history is celebrated in epic as an anthropomorphism of the mind of God. Further, classi­ cal poets who knew the glories of Troy also knew that its fate is inexorable to all in the future; from Whitman to Steinbeck, however, there are American epics such as The Octopus and The Grapes of Wrath that fly in the face of that knowledge. Chapter two argues that Moby Dick provides an alter­ native epic polemic to that which follows in the wake of Whitman.

    Wesleyan University – Graduate Liberal Studies course proposal For Spring 2019 Instructor: Jeanne Bonner Italian Women Writers: Before and After #FerranteFever From Grazia Deledda in the early part of the 20th century (the only Italian woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature), Elsa Morante and Natalia Ginzburg of the wartime era to Anna Maria Ortese in the postwar period, and Margaret Mazzantini and Elena Ferrante in more recent times, Italian literature by women, and in particular fiction or fictionalized memoir, provides a window on the times, as well as a portrait of a gender enshrined as Madonna-like on the one hand or sultry, sexual objects on the other but whose ambitions, in any event, have been vigorously policed (to quote playwright and actress Franca Rame, “All home, bed and church”). In this course, we will focus primarily on Italian women novelists and short story writers of the 20th and 21st century, with a few examples of earlier writers as well as two standout poets. And in doing so, we will read not only a Nobel laureate but also multiple writers who have won Italy’s highest literary prize, the Premio Strega. Indeed, the women authors who paved the way for #FerranteFever form a rich canon of literature unto themselves, despite the obstacles placed in their way. We will examine the social and political issues addressed by these works while also paying close attention to the context in which these Italian women writers wrote. That includes the political and social developments in Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries, with an emphasis on issues of special relevance to women.
