FOREWORD

This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the European Film Festival in Lebanon. Thank you for joining us on this special occasion!

Over the years thousands of people from all walks of life have attended hundreds of film screenings showcasing European cinema in Lebanon. The festival has become a landmark in Beirut's cultural agenda and across all major cities in Lebanon. And we are proud of this!

This year this is even more special for us as we mark twenty-five years of the European Film Festival in Lebanon. The world has changed a lot over these years, the European Union has grown and expanded with new countries joining the Union and much change has happened in Lebanon as well. Throughout these years, the festival never ceased to be a platform for dialogue and exchange. Year in and year out, the film festival continues not only to be a cultural appointment but a platform to promote freedom of expression.

With a wide range of films from European Member States, film makers and special visiting guests, the festival allows us to meet and engage on many different subjects relevant to our societies both in Europe and Lebanon. At times this is through laughter, other times it is with tears… Cinema is one thing which undoubtedly has the power to touch us all.

Two or The Dragon is the electro-acoustic duo of Abed Kobeissy and Ali Hout. The project is a result of the duo’s common interest in urban sounds and Arabic music. While approaching Beirut’s urban soundscapes as a local aesthetic and a main component in their work, the duo’s unique sound of processed Buzuq and percussions, combined with their background in traditional Arabic music, takes the sonic, visual, and pseudo- political day-to-day that is Beirut and reflects it onto a hyper-realistic soundscape. They released their first album “Prelude for the Triumphant Man” in 2017, composed many live scores for contemporary dance and theater productions, and are in the process of releasing their 2nd album this year. They’ve performed their work in Lebanon, Germany, Sweden, Norway, UK, France, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, USA, Canada, Chile, UAE, and Egypt.

Two or The Dragon est le duo électroacoustique de Abed Kobeissy et Ali Hout. Le projet est le résultat d’un intérêt commun que partagent les deux hommes dans le domaine des sons urbains et de la musique arabe. Dans leur traitement des paysages sonores urbains de Beyrouth en tant que constituant principal, esthétique et local dans leur travail, ils créent un son unique de Buzuq et de percussions, combiné avec leur background en musique arabe traditionnelle. Ce son est influencé par le quotidien sonore, visuel et pseudo-politique de Beyrouth et exprimé donc dans un paysage sonore hyper réaliste. Les deux hommes ont publié leur premier album « Prelude for the Triumphant Man » en 2017 et composé plusieurs partitions en direct pour des danses contemporaines et des productions théâtrales. Ils travaillent actuellement sur la publication de leur second album cette année. Ils ont présenté leur travail dans les pays suivants: Liban, Allemagne, Suède, Norvège, Royaume-Uni, France, Belgique, Italie, Irlande, États-Unis, Canada, Chili, Émirats arabes unis et Égypte.

Le Festival du Cinéma européen poursuit son initiative en direction des jeunes talents. Comme les années précédentes, le comité du Festival organisera un concours du meilleur court métrage libanais.
