Associate Professor , Department of English Language and Literature, Lorestan University, Khorramabad, Iran [email protected] / [email protected] 2.M.A. Student, Department of English Language and Literature, Lorestan University, Khorramabad, Iran [email protected] Abstract A Separation film, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, is a modern and provoking film worth consideration. Asghar Farhadi has always tried to depict conflict ideas and discourses throughout the society, and that's the reason why his movies always penetrate through different social classes and become epidemic; his recent film: A Separation is not an exception. In this article we have carefully examined the term “polyphony” and its application in a descriptive-analytical manner throughout the film, while explaining this term according to Bakhtin. We have tried first to answer the question “what are the components or factors of a polyphonic work and how is it embodied or manifested in the film”. Accordingly, in this article, the emphasis is on the components of polyphony, including the structure of conflict components, polyphony among social strata, change in viewpoint, heteroglossia, Intertextuality, etc. These factors are then examined and analyzed in the film. The result of this article is that the polyphonic film, with the tools it provides to the audience, leads them to a new perception of the text. MEDIA decided to back the project and contributed to distributed it in 24 countries across Europe – a record on its own. La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty, 2013) directed by Paolo Sorrentino (IT) Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film Support: € 491,531 for its development and its distribution across Europe With La Grande Bellezza, Paolo Sorrentino gained international acclaim as a European director who could encapsulate the human dimension of his characters in a perfect shot. Youth (also funded by MEDIA) continued along the same path. In 2016, Sorrentino made a successful foray into television, with The Young Pope which he considers to be a 10 hour-long movie Ida (2013) directed by Pawel Pawlikowski (PL) Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film Lux Prize Support: € 646,282 for its development and its distribution across Europe MEDIA provided seed money for the development of Ida. It also helped foreign distributors to show the film abroad through distribution schemes: Memento Films in France received €29,000 to show Ida to French audiences. France had the highest proportion of admissions for the film across Europe, with 484,000 viewers, one third of its total admissions. Tabu (2012) directed by Miguel Gomes (PT) 18 prizes and 40 nominations Support: € 192,800 for its development and its distribution across Europe Tabu, by Portugese director Miguel Gomes, was developed with the support of MEDIA. -

THE KARLOVY VARY FESTIVAL TO HONOR ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR BARRY LEVINSON At this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter-producer-director Barry Levinson, who won an Academy Award for Rain Man, will accept the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. The Karlovy Vary festival continues its tradition of recognizing the most important personalities of world cinema, the likes of which include directors William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, and Ken Loach, and screenwriter Paul Laverty. In his writing and directing capacity, Academy Award winner and five-time nominee Barry Levinson deftly combines personal stories with an often satirical look at society, and his movies have fundamentally influenced numerous young filmmakers. Barry Levinson established himself as a writer of successful television shows. With his onetime wife, Valerie Curtin, he then wrote the movie script for Norman Jewison’s courtroom drama …and justice for all (1979), which brought them an Oscar nomination. He debuted as a director with the comedy-drama Diner (1982), receiving his second Oscar nomination for the script. Ivan Král, a Czech musician based in the US, co- wrote the film music. Subsequent titles confirmed his reputation with critics and audiences: The Natural (1984) with Robert Redford, Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito, and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) with Robin Williams. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary picture Rain Man (1988), awarded four Oscars (e.g. Best Director for Barry Levinson) and numerous other honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film. -

5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now. -

CinEast 2019 – programme presentation I. GENERAL PRESENTATION Since 2008, the CinEast festival (the Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg) has contributed significantly to cultural diversity in Luxembourg by presenting some of the best films and art that Central and Eastern European countries have to offer. Since its first edition, the festival has grown considerably in its scope and diversity of programmes and has attracted a broader audience each year. In 2018, the festival screenings and other events attracted a total of around 10 400 people. The festival programme is complemented by a variety of special events, bringing together different forms of art (music, photography, literature, etc.), thus promoting cultural exchange and friendship through meetings, debates, food and music. It also presents a rare occasion for audiences in Luxembourg to learn about and experience the cultures of the countries represented in a broader sense. The festival is supported by several partners, including the City of Luxembourg, the Ministry of Culture, Cinémathèque, Neimënster, Kinepolis group, Film Fund Luxembourg, our main sponsors Docler Holding and Kulczyk Investments, as well as the embassies and cultural and film institutes of the countries represented. II. KEY FEATURES IN 2019 The 12th edition of the CinEast festival will take place from 3 to 20 October 2019 and will feature over 120 screenings (65 feature- length films and around 50 short films), as well as numerous accompanying events, including concerts, ciné-debates, two exhibitions, culinary events, special evenings and the CinEast Pro co-production forum. Besides the main festival venues in the City of Luxembourg – the Cinémathèque, Neimënster and Ciné Utopia – screenings will also take place at the Ancien Cinéma in Vianden, and other cinemas around the country (Kulturfabrik in Esch-sur-Alzette, CNA in Dudelange, Rumelange and Mondorf-les-Bains).
