Sena Gates, who won many battles as a community activist and advocate for Hawaii's HIV-AIDS population, lost a private battle with cancer Saturday Sep 5, 1998. Gates 48, directed Hawaii's Community Health Outreach Work (CHOW) project to prevent AIDS for about nine years. She was instrumental with a few others in getting state legislation allowing for a needle exchange program for AIDS prevention -- a program being used as a model in other states, said Peter M. Whiticar, chief of the state Health Department's STD/AIDS Prevention Branch. "She was a woman who spent her professional life fighting for something she believed in -- in public health," he said. "Sometimes it has been a lonely fight. I think we all owe a lot to her. She saved many lives in Hawaii and raised our consciousness about how we deal with drug users, and public health implications of how we deal with these people." An article written by Gates, Whiticar and three others on Hawaii's Statewide Syringe Exchange Program appears in the September issue of the prestigious American Journal of Public Health. It was submitted about eight months ago, Whiticar said. Suzette Smetka, who became acting CHOW director when Gates' health worsened earlier this year, said, "She fought hard for this program and I think it may not have existed and made it through the years without her." Smetka said the needle exchange program "has prevented an HIV epidemic among injecting drug users here. That's been very important work for the entire state . . . She should certainly be remembered for the work she has done." Gates earned a master's degree in public administration about a year ago while running the outreach project and taking care of a family, Whiticar said. "She had a lot going on at the same time." Gates' daughter, Molly Gates of Canada, and son, Jared, of the Big Island, gave up their jobs to help care for their mother over the past months. Also caring for her were her partner, Tony Volage, and his son Brandon. Gates was born in Tallahassee, Fla., and lived there until she was 19, Molly said. "She has always been really brave and out there and she took off and moved to San Francisco. She had never been anywhere." She had founded the Hawaii Women's Political Caucus and was a member of the Community Housing Resource Board, Affordable Housing Alliance and the city's Special Needs Committee. After working briefly at the state Health Department, she ran unsuccessfully for the Honolulu City Council. A longtime Waimanalo resident, she represented the Keolu- Waimanalo-Hawaii Kai-Kahala district on the Democratic ticket. Whiticar said Gates started an outreach project for injection drug users on a two-year federal grant. "She found she was not going to do much for this population unless they got needle exchange." So she and others started drafting legislation for a program, he said. She stopped work at CHOW in February to fight her cancer but "always held the hope she was going to be able to come back," he said. After a private family service, an open reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at her home at 41-912 Laumilo St., Waimanalo. Her body will be cremated and the ashes spread privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Robert Goodman, author, desktop publisher and National Geographic photographer, died Tuesday Oct 13, 1998 in Castle Hospital. He was 65. To the multifaceted Goodman, storytelling and technology were as old as man, whether the message be a stone-chiseled petroglyph in volcanic rock or an image from a click of a computer icon. In a preface to Hawaiian artist Herb Kane's book “Voyagers,” which Goodman published, he noted early Polynesians created chants to preserve their genealogies. “They navigated their double-hulled sailing canoes across thousands of miles of open ocean, guided by the paths of stars, by the waves and swells,” Goodman said. “Both their storytelling and their technology evolved as expressions of harmony with the natural world.” Goodman came to Hawaii in 1959 looking for a balance of technology and inspiration and found it here, he said. He and wife Lorie created an electronic color laboratory in their Nuuanu home that included scanning, typesetting, page layout, image-setting and proofing. “‘Voyagers,' as a demonstration of our new storytelling technology, is part of the history playing out across its pages. It is the first full color art book ever to present both text and images created entirely on the desktop,” Goodman said. Artist Kane said he and Goodman began working together in 1970 with publishing efforts related to Hawaiian music. “He really was a pacesetter in publishing in Hawaii,” Kane said. They published Kane's “Canoes of Polynesia” in 1974 and Kane's “Voyagers” in 1991. Another longtime friend and associate, author-historian MacKinnon Simpson, whose 1986 book “WhaleSong” was also a desktop book put out by Goodman, called Goodman's passing a terrible loss. Simpson noted “The Hawaiians,” a coffee-table book published in 1970, featuring Goodman photographs and text by Ed Sheehan and Gavan Daws, sold 250,000 copies. Altogether, Goodman had a hand in publishing more than 120 books, Simpson said. Before Goodman published Simpson's whaling book, he did things the old- fashioned way. “Prior to that, everything was published traditionally,” Simpson said. “I wrote ‘WhaleSong', and Bob and I designed it and put the whole thing together on a Macintosh.” Goodman was born in Cincinnati and attended Ohio University where he studied photography. He freelanced for publications such as Life, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and Saturday Evening Post, and became the youngest photographer ever employed by National Geographic. His work took him around the world. He left the National Geographic to pursue his own interests, with “The Australians,” his first published book in 1967. Goodman is survived by his wife; son David of Honolulu; daughter Maile Specter of Chicago; and father Winkler Goodman of Cincinnati. Services are pending.

Walton McWilliams Gordon embodied the phrase “heart of gold.” His friends, family and co-workers said they will remember his geniality. His former Farrington High School students remember a man of unyielding dedication to their future. Gordon, 96, who led the Hawaii school system through its first year of statehood, died yesterday Jul 24, 1998 in Portland, Ore., after a long illness. He had spent his last year in a nursing home, his system failing to bring nutrients to his body. “Even when he was in the nursing home for a year, people remarked on his courtesy. He was never in pain and never unhappy,” said his daughter, Rosemary Gordon Kimball. She described her father as an avid and successful gardener. Tourists would stop in front of his Nuuanu home to admire the huge bed of gardenias. Kimball often brought a dozen long-stemmed gardenias to school. “He was deeply loyal to his family, friends, to Farrington and the school system,” she said. Gordon had a career in education in Hawaii that stretched nearly four decades. “He was a true educator and was very interested in Hawaii’s children,” said Ruth Fuji, his secretary for 18 years. Gordon got his first teaching in Hilo in 1925 after leaving his farm in Blanche, Tenn. Hawaii was supposed to be his first stop on a trip around the world. He never left. “He liked his job,” Kimball said. And Hilo liked him, too. “I went to Hilo in 1992, and I was still introduced as Mr. Gordon’s daughter, and I’m 60 years old,” Kimball said. “He was so involved with school sports and dances. In fact, that is the only time I ever danced with my dad, at school dances.” He married a teacher, Mildred Viola Osmundson, in 1927, and moved to Oahu with her. He was principal of Central Intermediate School until 1942, when he became principal of Farrington. “He always told students, ‘This school is for you; it is your property, and it is up to you to take care of your school,’ “ Fuji said. “These kids had pride in their school. They were poor but they had pride.” He became district superintendent of Oahu schools in 1957 and state superintendent in January 1959. He retired in 1962. His ashes will be scattered on the Willamette River in Oregon. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Mildred, who died in 1987. He is survived by his second wife, Laurine; three grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. Memorials may be mailed to the Farrington High School Alumni and Community Foundation, P.O. Box 4261, Honolulu 96812-4261. [SB 25/07/1998]

Her book “Na Pule Kahiko: Ancient Hawaiian Prayers” contains a collection of traditional prayers that go back to before the 1819 overthrow of the kapu system. “A friend called and wanted a prayer that was appropriate for a wedding on the beach,” she once said. “I found it for him—and as we talked, I got the idea of gathering the prayers into a book.” She is survived by sons George Watanabe and William Nelson; daughters Georgia Perkins, Hazel Twelker, Sue Indich, Nancy Volle, Patricia Kaula and Nina Gutmanis-Bauguess; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
