Weaving a Legacy of Student Success

33 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

College Reading and Learning Association is a proud member of CAS, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education. CAS has been the pre-eminent force for promoting standards in student affairs and student learning and development programs since 1979.

CAS has developed General Standards (2011 edition) and 43 separate functional area standards through a consensus process of decision-making with more than 40 member organizations. Standards of special interest to CRLA members are the Standards and Guidelines for Learning Assistance Programs and the Standards and Guidelines for TRIO and OEO Programs. Similar high standards have been developed for academic advising, disability services, and other campus programs.

CRLA members use CAS standards and self-assessment guides to prepare for accreditation visits, conduct self-studies, and justify the effectiveness and efficiency of programs. To this end, CAS and CRLA have made the Learning Assistance Program standards and guidelines available to CRLA members on the Members Only page at www.crla.net.

The new 2012 self-assessment guides (SAGs) for Learning Assistance Programs and other campus programs are available for purchase at www.cas.edu, only $35 for the Learning Assistance Programs guide. For additional information, contact Karen Agee ([email protected]), CRLA’s representative on the CAS Board of Directors.

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 45th annual CRLA Conference and 31st annual CASP Conference! This has truly been a collaborative and team effort on the part of the Boards from CRLA, TxCRLA, and TADE plus countless other volunteers. This year’s conference has some of the familiar conference traditions but also some new ones—in the spirit of collaboration and growth!

Hopefully you are joining us Wednesday for an amazing array of Preconference Institutes that allow us to dig deep with our esteemed colleagues on topics of importance. Make sure to come Wednesday evening to the Welcome for First Timers and the All-Conference Welcome, which will feature the smooth music of the Mickey Hobbs Project, light hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar!

Thursday morning features a breakfast keynote by Dr. Victor B. Sáenz on the struggle of men of color in higher education and the induction of two CLADEA Fellows—a red carpet affair for sure! Additionally on Thursday there will be the Townhall meeting with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) as they continue to work with our institutions on the reshaping of developmental education in the State of Texas. Thursday night closes with the always friendly and welcoming “Dinner on the Town,” where volunteers will take small groups to various restaurants all within walking distance of the hotel.

Many concurrent sessions will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday! Friday morning also means taking care of some business at the CRLA Business meeting and hearing CRLA President Norm Stahl give a Presidential Address about the state of our profession and organization. Friday also marks a CRLA tradition of “Lunch with a Mentor”—with a record-breaking 16 mentors hosting tables of 9 colleagues for an intimate lunch conversation on various topics. And Friday wouldn’t be much fun without the Conference Social Hour—which features drawings for the CRLA Scholarship Raffle, snacks, and a cash bar! Make sure to buy your raffle tickets and come see everyone get really excited to see how many hand-knitted scarves Jeanne Higbee will bring to raffle off! And then things really get hopping as we head on down to St. Arnold’s Brewery for a real Texas BBQ and line-dancing good time. Brewery tours are optional but having FUN is not.

Saturday morning has us wrapping up with one more concurrent session, but a longer one (90 minutes) so that we can slow down... And this year everyone’s conference registration fee includes Saturday’s Brunch with a keynote speaker who will challenge us to reflect and digest what we learned—Michelle Cummings. Plus we have our traditional On-To-Boston/Amarillo presentations to get us excited about 2013. And of course, please don’t forget to join us in thePresident: Hospitality Suite Mitchel each Burchfield President: Sharon Miller evening from 8:30pm-10:30pm for late night snacks and beverages! Exploring New Angles on Student Learning & Diversity

CASP WElcome

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the Joint Conference of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and College Academic Support Programs (CASP)! CASP is an organization comprised of three separate Texas organizations: the Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE), the Texas College Reading and Learning Association (TxCRLA), and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

For the past 31 years, CASP has provided quality professional development opportunities to support the efforts of educators in Texas who work with students needing various forms of academic support as they reach for their goals in colleges and universities. Our story is one of successful collaboration that focuses on student success in higher education. We have joined forces with CRLA to bring you a truly memorable experience which combines the 45th Annual CRLA and the 31st Annual CASP Conferences. As presidents of our respective organizations, we offer you our sincere hope that this conference will prove beneficial to your efforts to help students you serve.

Many new initiatives in developmental education and academic support programs are occurring in the state of Texas, and our partnership with the THECB has been spearheading innovative programs in educational redesign. You are invited to participate in the popular “Town Hall” presentation included in the program to learn more. Those of you from Texas will have a chance to find out the latest news directly from the THECB that will impact your institution and those of you from other states will have the opportunity to compare the efforts in your own state with what is happening in Texas.

We are particularly excited and proud to showcase the Houston area to all of the attendees from other states. Rich in history and home to organizations such as NASA, Houston is the perfect location to “explore new angles on learning and diversity.” The local colleges and universities are among the finest in the nation, and we thank them for their help in making the conference a success.

Exploring New Angles on Student Learning & Diversity

CRLA Welcome

Fellow Learning Professionals,

Never before in the history of our field has the concept or value of “Professional Partnership” been more important. Developmental education and learning assistance as a field of both pedagogy and scholarship can be viewed as standing at the threshold of an era that offers great opportunities for new theoretical discussions, research questions, and instructional innovations. On the other hand, it might be postulated that we stand at the edge of the great abyss where outside forces with limited understanding of theory, research, or practice are ready to depower members of the profession and limit the academic opportunities available to ever so many postsecondary students across the nation.

Which direction will this decade ahead take us? It is our decision whether we enter a new and better academic world of promise or whether we fall into a chasm with little future and limited hope. How then do we choose the former over the latter? It’s simple! We must make the concerted decision to build partnerships within a profession and also build both vertical and horizontal partnerships across academic and societal borders rarely crossed in years past.

You are participating in a first step right now. In the days ahead you have the opportunity to benefit from a long-standing partnership between the College Reading & Learning Association and the College Academic Support Programs of Texas. Together we are able to deliver the 45th Annual CRLA Conference and the 31st Annual CASP Conference…a synergistic experience made stronger because of our desire to partner together once again.

Each day you will be able to benefit from an integrated conference program that highlights innovative programming as found on campuses both in Texas and from across the country. You have the opportunity to engage in scholarly dialogue as well as to ask the hard questions about evolving theory and recent research. Finally, you have the opportunity to reunite with old friends and also form lasting partnerships with new friends.

It is through partnerships that we take the steps to be a profession rather than simply a field. It will be through the partnerships that will take seed and flower over the days ahead that we will enter an era of promise for all within the profession and for all whom we serve.

Welcome to the 45th Annual CRLA and the 31st Annual CASP Conferences.

Norman A. Stahl, CRLA President

The Learning Support Services’ tour will include a demonstration of the electronic system used for tutor scheduling and tutor management, incorporating the student information system. Outcome assessment and program evaluation tools will be discussed as well. The tour will highlight the physical layout of a living/learning center, located in room 109 North Cougar Village 1, a freshman residential facility, which is open to all enrolled students.

NASA Johnson Space Center Tour & Kemah Boardwalk Dinner Saturday, November 10, 2012, 2pm-9pm, ($25 registration) Meet in the Hyatt Regency lobby at 1:45pm

EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF MANNED SPACEFLIGHT

Meet Jerry Woodfill, Former Apollo 13 Warning System Engineer, Co-recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 47-year NASA veteran, and National Universal Studios spokesman for the movie Apollo 13, The IMAX Experience.

Your journey into space begins with a tour of ’s Starship Gallery, where your guide, space pioneer Jerry Woodfill, will present a historic recreation of the famous President John F. Kennedy’s (JFK) Rice Stadium Space Race talk. Jerry was attending on a basketball scholarship and was present that day, Sept. 12, 1962. JFK’s inspiring address led to Jerry’s NASA Johnson Space Center presently on-going 47-year career at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Next Jerry will trace the progression of America’s Manned Space Flight with the actual Mercury “Faith 7” capsule flown by Gordon Cooper, the Gemini V Spacecraft piloted by Pete Conrad and Gordon Cooper, a Lunar Rover Training Vehicle. He will explain the rescue of Apollo 13 from one who shared the Presidential Medal of Freedom as a member of the Apollo 13 Mission Operations team and conclude with the Apollo 17 Command Module and the giant Skylab Trainer.

Finally, Jerry will share a parting examination of Armstrong’s Eagle-like lunar landing craft suspended in full-scale high above the enclosed Space Center Houston entry concourse. The next stop for your space adventure will be Jerry “rocketing” you to the huge Saturn 5 facility. There, he will give you an EVA-like explanatory “orbit around the actual 365-foot booster like that which rocketed Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin on their lunar voyage in July of 1969. (Throughout the journey, you will enjoy little-known, often humorous accounts from the Apollo era.)

Following your space adventure, Jerry, a Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE)/CRLA member and his wife Betty, the TADE Membership Chair, will be your hosts for a visit to the Kemah Boardwalk on . There you will be able to tour gift shops, enjoy the amusement park rides, and dine at a restaurant of your choosing (rides and dinner cost not included in the event fee). Kemah Boardwalk The tour of Space Center Houston is planned for two hours, with transportation by bus to the Kemah Boardwalk immediately following. The return bus trip to the hotel will depart Kemah around 8:00 PM.

Thursday’s Opening Session

CLADEA Fellow Induction Ceremony for Rosemary M. Karr and Saundra Y. McGuire

CRLA/CASP Conference Opening Session, Thursday, November 8, 2012, 8: 00 AM Imperial Ballroom The Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA) mission is “to foster mutual support among national and international organizations dedicated to postsecondary learning assistance or developmental education” (www.cladea.org).

Thousands of learning assistance and developmental education professionals are represented on the Council by these five member organizations:

• Association for the Tutoring Profession (ATP) • College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) • National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) • National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) • National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA)

The Council endorses the following certification programs: ATP’s Tutor Certification and Tutor Trainer Certification; CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification and International Mentor Training Program Certification; NADE’s Tutoring Services, Course- Based Learning Assistance, and Developmental Coursework Program Certification; and NCLCA’s Learning Center Leadership Certification.

The Council spurs excellence in another way, too, by recognizing and honoring the most outstanding leaders in the profession. Distinguished researcher and scholar Martha Maxwell conceived of the program. Critical factors for selection as a Fellow include long-term and significant contributions to our field. Selection as a Fellow represents the highest honor conferred upon professionals in learning assistance, tutoring, and developmental education. Individuals selected as Fellows must be nominated by a current Fellow or by a CLADEA member association. Current Fellows review a portfolio of each nominee’s accomplishments and select the new Fellows.

A Very Brief History of CRLA

CRLA’s founders—reading specialists in colleges of the western United States—created the Western College Reading Association to meet the needs of college reading specialists, reading centers, and reading programs. This was in 1966, when colleges and universities were struggling to find space for all the “new” students, achieve equal access, and meet academia’s higher responsibilities.

Western College Reading Association (WCRA): 1966-1983 Gene Kerstiens describes the birth: "At 1:30 A.M., the Saturday before Thanksgiving 1966, in room 202 of the then Holiday Inn, San Bernardino, California, about 20 of those remaining at a 5-½-hour meeting signed the “blood oath” to create a college-level reading association. Within two years the active and dedicated drafted a constitution, elected officers (President Robert Griffin, President-Elect Frank Christ, Secretary Loretta Newman of Los Angeles Harbor College, and Treasurer Gil Williams of San Bernardino Valley College), started a quarterly newsletter (edited by Frank Christ) and placement clearinghouse for college reading teachers, and set annual dues at $5.00.

WCRA held its first conference in April 1968 in Phoenix, where Dr. Robert Shafer, an Arizona State University reading professor, gave the keynote address, “The Practical Critic, the Rhetorician, and a Developing Model of Reading Comprehension.” At that time the organization numbered 144 members representing 12 western states and provinces, with over half of the membership from California. In 1969, the treasurer was bonded, associate memberships were offered to administrators and librarians, and state directors were appointed by the president. Finally, a directory project was initiated to identify college reading teachers, their backgrounds, and their job descriptions to determine a potential standard for the field.

Conference traditions developed early. In 1968 began the tradition of an evening hospitality suite for all members to meet with association officers and fellow members. Later this “informal discussion of vital issues” became known as the Friday Night Literary Society and sometimes Poetry Night.

WCRA grew fast in the 1970s, a period of enormous change in higher education that stimulated rapid growth of learning centers, reading programs, and developmental studies across North America in response to new imperatives. The young WCRA organization incorporated in 1972 and filed its constitution and bylaws with the Corporation Commission of New Mexico. In 1975 the Executive Board established WCRA’s unofficial motto: "the Blue Chip organization for college reading professionals."

Student memberships were initiated at $2.50, the president-elect was made conference program chair, and on-site chairs handled local arrangements. Conference proceedings were edited by Frank Christ, with the first issue featuring papers and addresses from the first three conferences. The position of archivist was created in 1976, and a scholarship fund of $1,000 was set up in 1977 to award a yearly scholarship to graduate students pursuing degrees relevant to the interests of WCRA members. In 1979 the Board instituted an annual service award, too.

In 1977 members voted to hold all WCRA conferences in the western region of the United States, but eventually the W in the name was expanded to mean the Western Hemisphere. WCRA voted in 1978 to hold conferences only in states that had ratified the ERA, a decision that eventually became moot. In 1978, dues took a big leap to $15.

Western College Reading and Learning Association (WCRLA): 1983-1989 In 1983, after years of deliberation and discussion, the membership voted to expand its name to Western College Reading and Learning Association to welcome the many professionals in writing, learning assistance, tutorial programs, mathematics, developmental studies, counseling, and other fields who were finding WCRA conferences and publications beneficial to their professional experience.

WCRLA expanded member services with bigger and more diverse conferences, Special Interest Groups, and elections by mail ballot. In 1983, WCRLA replaced the annual conference Proceedings with the double-blind-juried Journal of College Reading and Learning. To provide continuity, the offices of treasurer and secretary became two-year positions elected in alternate years. A formal liaison relationship was established with the young sister organization of NARDSPE, which later became NADE. continued on pg 94

A Very Brief History of CRLA (continued)

New WCRLA conference features included dinner on the town, newcomers' welcome sessions, and a designated computer room. The first WCRLA conference was held at the Portland (Oregon) Marriott and keynoted by A. Garr Cranney of Brigham Young University. The next five WCRLA conferences (1984-1988) met in San Jose, Denver, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, and Sacramento, continuing the tradition of meeting every other year in California, alternating northern and southern locations.

College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA): 1989 to the present The organization's name was changed in 1989 to College Reading and Learning Association. Although there was sentimental angst about dropping "Western" from the name, the new name acknowledged a membership stretching across the United States, Canada, and overseas.

To better define the training needed by peer tutors, the now-recognized International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC), was created in 1989, followed later by International Mentor Program Certification (IMPC) in 1998.

The 1990s. The organization truly matured in the 1990s, creating an election process that allows new officers adequate time to prepare for new duties; new Board positions of Membership Coordinator and Executive Assistant; contracts with commercial mailing services; more scholarships and awards; a strategic plan; an International Symposium on Teaching and Learning; and the Professional Association Liaison Committee. Annual conferences moved from spring to fall to avoid conflict with spring holy days and NARDSPE/NADE’s spring conference.

Martha Maxwell served as CRLA’s first director on the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, and CRLA helped develop CAS standards for learning assistance programs. In 1996, CRLA was a founding member of the American Council of Developmental Education Associations (ACDEA) to improve communication and facilitate action among associations. Also in the 1990s, a Past Officers’ Council was created to advise the Board, and dues rose from $25 to $40, still the best bargain in professional development. The 2000s. Despite campus funding cuts and travel restrictions in 2001 and another dues increase to $50 in 2003, both CRLA membership and attendance at CRLA conferences increased. The Call to Conference was delivered to members’ electronic mailboxes, and the association continued to meet professional development needs of its members by means of the Journal of College Reading and Learning, the now-electronic NewsNotes newsletter, e-bulletins, and expanded website resources.

The Board and membership adopted a Position Statement on the Rights of Adult Readers and Learners (2002) and Guidelines for Professional Ethics (2003). Eight Guiding Principles were adopted to replace the strategic plan. The number and value of scholarship and travel awards increased, and projects initiated by Special Interest Groups and state/region/ chapter groups were more generously funded to ensure that the association’s resources benefited members’ professional development requests. A new CRLA Tutor Training Handbook was published in 2003.

The association supported the work of ACDEA’s Blue Ribbon Commission and in 2007 helped ACDEA transition into the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA) to take collaborative action for high standards and professional development. CRLA continues to nominate worthy CLADEA Fellows as paradigms of professional practice.

The new decade. CRLA’s training certification programs were renamed International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) and International Mentor Training Program Certification (IMTPC) in 2010. In 2011 the organization contracted with a management company to take over responsibilities of membership services, mailing, and the website. CRLA tutor program certification and new ITTPC pins for trained tutors are sought by more and more programs, and the Handbook for Training Peer Tutors and Mentors was published in 2012.

CRLA offers this 2012 conference in Houston—its 45th annual conference—to celebrate your work as members of the first organization in the field of college reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, mentoring, and student success!
