Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving

Reader: Lord Jesus, you came into this world to reveal the tremendous depth of God’s love for each of us. You invited everyone to follow you. You healed the sick, forgave the guilt-ridden, included the excluded, and taught people how to live and love. Yet a handful of political and religious authorities rejected you and condemned you to die on a cross.

All: Forgive me Lord, for the times I condemn you again by not honoring your presence in others and in myself. Forgive me for the times I judge my brothers and sisters harshly. I am so quick to find fault in others and in myself. Too often I criticize people for how they look or how they act or dress. Too often I see only my weaknesses. Too often I am blind to the goodness you see in us all. Sometimes, Lord, others have rejected and condemned me. It seems like I’m either condemning or being condemned. Surely there must be a better way!

Leader: Let’s take a moment in silent reflection asking: Who are the people – individuals or groups – you look down on and condemn, either in the silence of your mind or in the words that you speak?

All: Jesus, by the power of your spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to look for and find the good in others and in ourselves. Help us to forgive those who have rejected and condemned us, just as we need others to forgive us for the times we have rejected and condemned them. Lead us along the path of acceptance. Help us to respect the uniqueness of each person, for we are all created in God’s image and likeness. Teach us to love. Amen

Lector: Señor salvador y perdonador, te amamos, te necesitamos, y confiamos en ti. Todos: Danos la fuerza para seguir tu forma de vivir y de amar. Lector: Señor Jesús, Veniste a este mundo para revelar la tremenda profundidad del amor de Dios por cada uno de nosotros. Has invitado a todos a seguirte. Sanaste a los enfermos, perdonaste a los culpables, incluíste a los excluídos, y enseñaste cómo vivir y amar. Sin embargo, un puñado de autoridades políticas y religiosas te rechazaron y te condenaron a morir en una cruz. Jesus is Made to Take Up His Cross

Jesús carga con la cruz

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus you did not ask for your cross, yet you picked it up. You did not ask to be mistreated rather than abandon your commitment to nonviolence and unconditional love. Where did you get your strength? Your heart must have been so heavy with sadness, your body so sore from being beaten, your spirit so weak as you wondered why this violence was being done to you.

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the times I take the easy way out. Forgive me for the times I choose to use violent words or actions rather than to take up my cross and suffer for the sake of love. To be honest Lord, I’m afraid to take up my cross. I’m not sure what it means. I think you’re telling me to face the pain in my life – to let go of revenge and to forgive someone who has hurt me, to let go of the fear of befriending someone who is lonely or left out, to deal with my personal problems with courage.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection to ask; what are your crosses? That is, what challenging or difficult situations are you facing?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to trust in your promise to be with us always as we take up our crosses. During our roughest and most challenging times, help us to lean on you and support one another. Remind us of how near you are and how eager you are to help us cope with the pain we each face. Teach us to love. Amen

Lector: Señor salvador y perdonador, te amamos, te necesitamos, y confiamos en ti.

Todos: Danos la fuerza para seguir tu forma de vivir y de amar.

Lector: Señor, Jesús, no pediste la cruz, más, sin embargo, la cargaste. No pediste ser maltratado en lugar de dejar tu compromiso con la no violencia y el amor incondicional. ¿De dónde sacaste tu fuerza? Jesus Falls for the First Time

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, falling seems so weak, so embarrassing, so humiliating. We are taught to stand tall and act strong or risk being laughed at. Is it okay to feel weak? We are sad when we think of you falling under the weight of your cross. Yet sometimes we are secretly happy when certain people fall and fail under the weight of their crosses – crosses that sometimes we give them.

ALL: Forgive me, Lord, for the times I laugh at others and cause them to fall by my thoughtless words and actions. Forgive me for the times I do not even try to walk under the weight of my cross. Please know that I really want to do the right thing. At times I want to forgive, only to find I can’t let go of a grudge. At times I want to speak kindly, only to say hurtful things to someone who just wants the same respect I want.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection and ask: Who do you like to see fall? Whose life are you making harder than it has to be? What good intentions of yours haven’t become actions?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to get up when we fall and fail in life. Give us the strength to try again and again to live the way you taught us to live, no matter how many times we stumble. Help us choose – moment by moment and person by person – not to make life needlessly painful for others by what we say and do. Teach us to love. Amen

Lector Señor salvador y perdonador, te amamos, te necesitamos, y confiamos en ti.

Todos: Danos la fuerza para seguir tu forma de vivir y de amar.

Lector: Señor Jesús, El caer nos parece una debilidad embarazosa y humillante. Se nos enseña a parecer fuertes o arriesgar que se rían de nosotros. ¿Está bien sentirnos débiles? Nos da tristeza cuando pensamos en cuando te caíste bajo el peso de tu cruz. Sin embargo, a veces en secreto estamos felices cuando algunas personas se caen y fallan bajo el peso de sus cruces - cruces las cuales a veces nosotros les hemos dado.

Jesus Meets His Mother

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, what was it like to see the pain in your mother’s eyes? Did your tears mingle with her tears in a quick embrace? Did she whisper, “I love you”? We often see pictures in the news of families who have experienced the horrors of war or who live in poverty. When those parents look at their children, do they feel like Mary did the day she watched you carry your cross? When we are hurting emotionally or physically, do our parents feel as helpless as Mary did? Are they often filled with worry for us as we become more independent?

ALL: Forgive me, Lord, for not appreciating all that my parents try to do for me. Even if it seems like they are going about it in the wrong way, I know they are trying their best. Forgive me for acting as if I don’t need their help. Help me to include them in my life rather than push them away. Forgive me for the hurtful things I sometimes say to them in anger. I hope they know I don’t mean it. I also hope they know how much I love them, even though I sometimes have difficulty saying so.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection and think about one of your parents or another adult who has cared for you. What do you appreciate about him or her? Despite conflicts you may have had with this person, what are his or her good qualities? How can you love him or her more generously?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your Spirit, who lives within each of us, comfort and strengthen all parents throughout the world, especially those living in poverty, as they struggle and grieve for their children. Comfort and strengthen our parents too. Help us to follow the fourth commandment by honoring our parents with respectful words and actions. May we give them the same respect we give our friends. Teach us to say “Thank You”, “I’m Sorry” and “I Love You”. Teach us to love. Amen!

Lector: Señor Jesús, ¿Qué te sentiste al ver el dolor en los ojos de tu madre? ¿Tus lágrimas tal vez se mezclaron con las suyas al darse un abrazo breve? ¿Tal vez ella te susurró "Te amo"? Simon Helps Jesus Carry His Cross

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, you showed us how human you were by needing Simon’s help. Your cross was too heavy for you, just as at times our crosses are too heavy for us to carry alone. Were you surprised when the soldiers pulled Simon out of the crowd to help you? No solider are pulling us out of our groups. Yet you are counting on us to help carry the crosses of those who are struggling in life, even when we would rather remain safely hidden among our friends.

ALL: Forgive me, Lord, for failing to help someone when I have the chance to do so. Forgive me for my reluctant attitude when I am asked to help but don’t want to give up any of my time. You taught us that when we help anyone – friend or foe, parent or peer – we are helping you. Help me speak encouraging words to everyone, starting with a simple hello to someone I normally ignore. Free me from an uncaring attitude and from being too concerned with what my peers may think of me. Give me the courage to carry another’s cross.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection and ask… How willingly do you help others when you are asked to do so? What are some recent examples of how you have demonstrated care and concern for some outside your circle of friends?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your Spirit, who lives within each of us, give us the courage to break free from the chains of negative peer pressure that prevent us from being a friend to someone in need. Help us to stay true to ourselves and to you as we follow Simon’s example. And when we struggle with the weight of our own crosses, don’t let us be too proud to accept another person’s helping hand and heart. Teach us to love!

Lector: Señor salvador y perdonador, te amamos, te necesitamos, y confiamos en ti.

Lector: Señor Jesús, tú nos demostraste cuán humano eras por haber necesitado la ayuda de Simón. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, the mixture of Blood, sweat and dust trickling down your face and stinging your eyes made your painful journey even more difficult. As Veronica wiped your face, perhaps her gentleness in the midst of such brutality reinforced what you already knew and believed: People are basically good and want to do good, but too often fear and selfishness lead them astray.

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the times I fail to act out of my God given goodness. When I take the lesser paths of hate and hurt, I am following Veronica’s example. Forgive me for not loving with the same gentleness and care that Veronica showed you.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection and name some ways you can be gentler with and compassionate towards yourself and others.

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your Spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to act with kindness and compassion as we unite our love with yours in caring for someone who is hurting. We know that acting tough or uncaring is just a put-on. We’re not really that way. Help us to be kind to ourselves and others. Teach us to love. Amen.

Lector: Señor salvador y perdonador, te amamos, te necesitamos, y confiamos en ti.

Todos: Danos la fuerza para seguir tu forma de vivir y de amar.

Lector: Señor Jesús , la mezcla de la sangre , el sudor y el polvo que te corría por la cara y que te ardía los ojos hizo que tu viaje doloroso fuera aún más difícil. Jesus Falls for the Second Time

Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, I wish you had walked straight and strong like some kind of superhero, rather than falling. But then you wouldn’t have been fully human like us – except for sin, of course. You fell because you had been tortured and your body was weak. In that moment you may have felt deep sadness for all those who needed your Abba’s unconditional love but seemed unable to accept it. You wanted – and always will want – people to know how near God’s love and acceptance is. Yet we often stumble and fall through life unaware.

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for sometimes refusing to believe in the tremendous love you have for me. When I walk away from love, I’m like a penniless person who rejects a million dollar gift. Forgive me for thinking I have everything I need without you. Expecting myself to be perfect and thinking I don’t need anyone’s help only makes it harder to get up when I fall. When you fell, the strength you received from your relationship with your Abba gave you the courage to get up and keep going.

Reader: Lord Jesus, in your culture men were expected to be friends with only men, but you didn’t let custom of society prevent you from having friendships with women as well. I’m sure the women you encountered had never met anyone who accepted, loved, listened to, healed and forgave them as you did. So when your time of suffering came, they were understandably devastated. But they did not know then what we know now: Death failed to conquer you. Instead you conquered both evil and death!

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the times I do nothing when I have the chance to do something to make a difference. Like the woman you met, I sometimes feel devastated by the evil in this world. The amount of suffering is truly overwhelming. But though I can’t help everyone, I can help someone. Forgive me for the many times I think only of myself. Forgive me for giving into society’s ways and prejudices – even when I know it is wrong to do so. Help me to see that this is a journey we’re on.

Leader: Take a moment in silent reflection to ask, what suffering do you see that causes you to grieve? What prejudices do you hold – even though you know they are wrong? Who can you help today?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of the Spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to turn our feelings of grief and pity into acts of love. Help us to be brave as we take a path different from the one society says is acceptable. Help us befriend, accept and value everyone. You said to us, “Love one another as I have loved you”. We know that the kind act we do for one of our brothers or sisters is also done for you. Give us the strength to try to make a difference – one person at a time. Teach us to Love. Amen!

Reader: Lord Jesus, what was going on in your heart and mind as you got closer to the horror to come? Surely you knew about – and even likely witnessed – the crucifixion of others. It was a cruel method of torture that the Romans used to terrorize and control people. Did your fear take your breath away and cause you to stumble? Did you somehow sense your Abba’s presence at such a terrifying time? Does the horror, cruelty and suffering in our world today cause you to feel sad?

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the times I am cruel. It is so easy to make hurtful comments that crushes someone’s heart. Sadly, I see that when I am at my worst, I am not that much different from the Roman torturers. But I know you encourage me to forgive myself, apologize, ask forgiveness of those I hurt and try again. I ask forgiveness too Lord, for those who terrorize people and inflict violence on them. Open their eyes to see you in the faces of their victims. Change their hearts.

Leader: Let’s take a moment and ask ourselves: Do you need to apologize to and ask forgiveness from someone for something hurtful or cruel you’ve done or said to them? Do you need to forgive yourself?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of your spirit, who lives within each one of us, help us to recognize our sinful behavior when we hurt someone. Help us to know that you are eager to love and forgive us and help us to try again. Thank you for loving us even when we are at our worst. Call forth the best in each of us. Teach us to love. Amen!

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the many times I don’t treat my body very well. Help those who are tempted by or who use cigarettes, alcohol, drugs or pornography to stay away from these “body strippers”. Forgive me for the many times I have judged people’s worth by their bodies. Forgive me for seeing somebody as a body rather than as a person with a soul, created in your image. Forgive me for making unkind commends – sexual and otherwise – about other people’s bodies and about my own body.

Leaders: Let’s take a moment to reflect silently: How can you be a friend to your body? How can you show more respect for all human beings – body, soul and spirit – by what you do and say or don’t do or say?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of the Spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to walk the path of respect for all people. Give us the strength to make good choices for our bodies and our minds each day. Help us to treat our sexuality as a sacred and awesome gift. And to add to your suffering, some bystanders viciously taunted and insulted you. Did you feel like you had failed in your mission to reveal God’s love for humanity as you suffered from such inhumanity?

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for the times I hurt others by insulting them, gossiping, spreading rumors, or acting like they did not even exist. The potential to destroy that was in the Roman soldiers, in some of the religious authorities and in some of the crowd gathered on that horrible afternoon resides in all of us. But the potential to build up, to create and to love is also within all of us. Forgive me for the times when I have treated another human being inhumanely.

Leader: Let’s take a moment to reflect in silence… Are you hurting someone through your words or actions? What beginning steps can you take to become more kind and loving?

ALL: Jesus by the power of your spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to choose the more challenging and rewarding path of love and nonviolence when we are tempted to hurt or act violently. It is not easy to follow the Gospel these days, when it is obvious that many people in our world do not. You only asked for our sincere efforts, not excuses. Help us to be responsive and responsible to one another. Teach us to love. Amen!

Jesus Dies on the Cross

Reader: Lord Jesus, what a horrible way to die; suffocating while nailed to a cross. Surely your Abba did not want you to die on a cross as repayment for our sins! That’s not the kind of God we believe in. You were just too big a threat to the religious and political authorities. The cross reveals the depth of your love and commitment. You showed by your death on the cross that you will go the distance to be faithful to God’s call.

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for not doing or saying the right thing because I refuse to suffer at all. Sometimes it’s more important to me to be liked than to reach out and love, to remain comfortable than to reach out and comfort. Forgive me for those times when I’m like the authorities of your day – those who didn’t want to change and who refused to pay the price of love. Forgive me for refusing to die to my selfish and petty ways.

Leader: In silence let us reflect on… What actions or attitudes do you need to let die? How can you reach out to love those in need, taking courage from Jesus’ willingness to die on the cross?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of the Spirit that lives within each of us, help us to be brave as we die to selfish ways and as we rise to live more selflessly and generously. Free us from counting the cost of love. Help us to continue to love those who reject us for doing the right thing. You are our God, the one who has given us victory over evil and death. You are the one who will be with us as we pay the price for loving. Teach us to love. Amen!

Reader: Lord Jesus, the Scriptures tell us that a follower named Joseph of Arimathea took your body down from the cross. Tradition has your mother cradling your lifeless body in her arms. How completely shattered your mother and followers must have been as they gazed upon your bruised and bloody body through tear -blurred eyes. They must have felt like their hearts has been ripped out of them as they grieved your death.

ALL: When I think about your death or when I lose someone I love, I feel despair and think death is the end. When I think of my own death, terror instead of faith rises in me. When I hear about the horrible things that happen to people, I lose hope. I forget that after every Good Friday comes an Easter Sunday. Help me believe that you are with me and all of humanity, helping us through all our painful times, including death.

Leader: Close your eyes for a moment, and reflect in silence… Allow Jesus to hold you just as Mary held him at the foot of the cross. Open yourself to the abundant love God has for you; especially when you are struggling with grief, hopelessness, or despair.

ALL: Jesus, by the power of the Spirit, who lives within each of us, give us the strength to deal with our feelings of hopelessness and despair. Help us turn to you, especially during the most painful and difficult times in life. Help us to accept that death is a part of life. Help us to realize that we don’t have to face it alone. May we cling to your promise to be with us every moment of this life, including the hour of our death. Embrace our loved ones when they die and hold each of us deep in your heart now and forever, as we place our hope in your promise of eternal life. Teach us to love. Amen!

Lector: Señor Jesús, las Escrituras nos dicen que un seguidor llamado José de Arimatea bajó tu cuerpo de la cruz. La tradición cuenta que tu madre acuñaba en sus brazos tu cuerpo sin vida. Cuán completamente destrozados tu madre y tus seguidores deben haber sido ya que contemplaban tu cuerpo magullado y ensangrentado a través de ojos llenos de lágrimas. Habían de sentir que sus corazónes habían sido arrancados de ellos de tanto dolor. Todos: Cuando pienso en tu muerte o cuando pierdo a alguien a quien amo, siento la desesperación y pienso que la muerte es el final. Cuando pienso en mi propia muerte, un terror en lugar de la fe nace en mí. Cuando oigo hablar de las cosas horribles que suceden a la gente, pierdo la esperanza. Me olvido de que después de cada Viernes Santo viene un Domingo de Pascua. Ayúdame a creer que estás conmigo y con toda la humanidad, ayudándonos a atravesar todos nuestros momentos dolorosos, incluyendo la muerte. Reader: Saving and forgiving Lord, we love you, we need you and we trust you.

ALL: Give us the strength to follow your way of living and loving.

Reader: Lord Jesus, it must have seemed so final to your friends and followers when your body was laid in the tomb. Death and evil had won. Today when we bury someone we love, we sometimes feel like death has won again. But the truth is that death is not the winner. It’s not even the enemy! Rather, death is part of life and is on the road we all must travel on our journey home to you.

ALL: Forgive me Lord, for failing to recognize what an absolutely precious gift all of life is. Each of us is a unique, irreplaceable child of God. Yet sometimes I am too blind to see the value we all have. Forgive me for taking life for granted, as if people, the world, you, or even life itself owes me something. Life is, after all, a God-given gift. Forgive me for the many times I complain of being bored. Help me choose to get involved and make a difference in the world.

Leader: In silence let us reflect… In what ways do you see life as a gift? In what ways is it a burden? How can you take more responsibility for your life’s direction and happiness?

ALL: Jesus, by the power of the Spirit, who lives within each of us, help us to live each day fully and attentively. Keep us from wasting our life, for our time to make a difference on earth is short. Free us from chronic complaining and help us to see the abundant blessings that surround us. May we live wisely so that when we die, we can greet death as a gentle friend who has come to take us home. Teach us to love. Amen!

Lector: Señor Jesús, les debe haber parecido tan final a tus amigos y seguidores cuando tu cuerpo fue colocado en el sepulcro. Como que la muerte y el mal hubieran ganado. Cuando enterramos a alguien a quien amamos, a veces se siente que la muerte haya vuelto a ganar. Pero la verdad es que la muerte no es el ganador. ¡Ni siquiera es el enemigo! Más bien, la muerte es parte de la vida y está en el camino que todos tenemos que recorrer mientras regresamos al hogar que tenemos contigo. Todos: Perdóname Señor, por no reconocer lo absolutamente preciosa que es toda la vida. Cada uno de nosotros es un hijo único e insustituible de Dios. Sin embargo, a veces soy demasiado ciego para ver el valor que todos tenemos. Perdóname por dar la vida por sentada, como si la gente, el mundo, tú, o incluso la vida misma me debiera algo. La vida es, después de todo, un don de Dios. Perdóname por las muchas veces que me quejo de estar aburrido. Ayúdame a optar por involucrarme y hacer una diferencia en el mundo. Líder: En silencio reflexionemos ... ¿De qué maneras miras a la vida como un regalo? ¿De qué maneras es una carga? ¿Cómo puedes tomar más responsabilidad para la dirección de tu vida y tu felicidad?
