Rosner* In light of the recent controversy surrounding Augusta National Golf Club's exclusionary membership policy, this Article highlights the myriad incentives and disincentives that Augusta and similar clubs havefor reforming such policies. The author acknowledges the economic importance of club membership in many busi- ness communities and addresses the extent to which club members' claims of rights of privacy andfree association are valid. The Article also considers the potential of judicialaction in promoting the adoption of more inclusive membership policy; the state action doctrine and the First Amendment right to freedom of association are discussed as frameworks under which litigants may potentially bring claims against clubs and the author assesses the likelihood of success under each.

Franklin Templeton Shootout Purse Climbs To $2.5 Million NAPLES (April 20, 2004) – The Franklin Templeton Shootout announced that it would raise its purse to $2.5 million for the 2004 event. This is the seventh consecutive year the purse has been signi ficantly increased, and this year the winning team will split a tournament record $600,000. “Through our outstanding corporate partners, most notably Franklin Templeton, we are able to continue raising our purse, thereby attracting a world -class field,” Gr eg Norman said. “That allows us to host a quality event and reach our goal of providing significant funds for charity.” The Franklin Templeton Shootout was founded in 1989 as a result of Laura and Greg Norman's desire to raise money for charity and create a unique experience for PGA Tour players. The 2004 tournament will be held November 10 -14 at the Norman -designed Tiburon Golf Club on the grounds of The Ritz -Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. Tickets will go on sale in early September. This will mark the fourth year the event has called Southwest Florida home, and thanks to the generous support of Franklin Templeton and other supporting sponsors the purse has increased a remarkable 25 percent since relocating to Naples. “The increased purse will continue to attr act the world's best players to Naples,” said Tournament Director Taylor Ives. “The 2003 field was perhaps our strongest to date and we are confident the 2004 field will again raise the bar.” Spectators and a national television audience saw another dramat ic conclusion a year ago.

An Assessment of the Effects of Alterations to the Old Course at St. Andrews on the 2015 Open Championship Charles E. Gaudet∗ Department of Psychology, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI, USA Abstract. The Old Course at St. Andrews Links is one of the world’s most revered golf courses and the Open Championship is the oldest major championship in professional golf. In 2015 the Old Course hosted the Open Championship. Beforehand, several of the course’s holes were altered in an attempt to maintain its difficulty and counteract the rapid advances in professional golfers’ skills and equipment. This study assessed the effects of the alterations to the Old Course in two ways. The aggregate performance statistics for the 2005, 2010, and 2015 Open Championship tournaments, all hosted at the Old Course, were compared. Scoring on the altered holes was compared across the 2010 and 2015 tournaments, as were the differences between the altered and unaltered holes. The analyses took into account the weather conditions. Players’ overall scores improved between the 2010 and 2015 tournaments, but not between the 2005 and 2010 tournaments. Players’ scores only differed between the 2010 and 2015 tournaments for two of the altered holes, indicating that the changes had a negligible overall effect. Strategic factors that might account for the observed differences and the implications of the analysis for efforts to alter courses to maintain difficulty are discussed. Keywords: Golf, St. Andrews, Open Championship, course alterations 1.

  • The Determinants of Attendance at Pga and Pga Tour Tournaments
THE DETERMINANTS OF ATTENDANCE AT PGA AND PGA TOUR TOURNAMENTS A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Chad Rau May 2009 THE DETERMINANTS OF ATTENDANCE AT PGA AND PGA TOUR TOURNAMENTS Chad Rau May 2009 Major: Economics, Minor: History Abstract Previous research has examined factors influencing attendance at various sports leagues, but very little attention has been focused specifically on the PGA and PGA Tour. This study examines the potential factors influencing a fan to attend PGA and PGA Tour tournaments from the 1998-2007 seasons. This study incorporates a regression analysis along with qualitative research to analyze the data. The regression results suggest that income, the type of course the tournament is played on, and the tournament number are all important factors influencing attendance at PGA and PGA Tour tournaments. However, the qualitative research results suggest that Tiger Wood's participation and the strength of the field competing in the tournament are the most important factors impacting attendance. KEYWORDS: (PGA, PGA Tour, Attendance) ON MY HONOR, I HAVE NEITHER GIVEN NOR RECEIVED UNAUTHORIZED AID ON THIS THESIS Signature ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would first of all like to acknowledge and thank Julie Chesley for all of her support and guidance throughout this entire project. Without your advice and expertise this thesis would not have been remotely close to the level of quality it has become. I need to thank all of the respondents who discussed their experiences and opinions on factors impacting attendance at PGA and PGA Tour tournaments.
