2004 PGA TOUR Media Guide / 1-1 Table of Contents A Message to the Media n behalf of the players and staff, welcome to the 2004 PGA TOUR season. We appreciate your continued interest in our sport, and we clearly recognize the extent to which our success is tied to the thorough and professional coverage we receive from a Owide variety of global media outlets. As the PGA TOUR begins another great season, we can truly state that the image and competitive spirit of our players has led to the healthiest state in the history of our organization. The Sports Business Journal recently reaffirmed this when it published the “2003 League Report Card,” a survey of corporate sponsors’ opinions of their investment in sports properties. The PGA TOUR ranked first in overall satisfaction among the 16 major sports. This is important as we continue to raise the exposure of our tournaments, provide significant value to our sponsors and showcase the widespread excellence of our athletes. The competition level on the PGA TOUR in 2003 was at an all-time high, with season-ending honors going down to the wire. Tiger Woods recorded a season-high five victories and the lowest stroke average on TOUR and garnered a fifth consecutive Player of the Year honor. Vijay Singh won four times and captured his first money title. Davis Love III won a career-high four times, includ- ing THE PLAYERS Championship, making 2003 the first time in 30 years where three players won four or more times in a season. However, the depth of the TOUR was never more evident. Eleven players age 40 or older combined to capture 15 PGA TOUR titles. Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel won the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship, respectively, making for a first-timers’ sweep of the major championships for the first time since 1969. The season cul- minated with a fantastic display of great golf and sportsmanship at The Presidents Cup in South Africa, with captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreeing to share the Cup after the match ended in a tie. These highlights offered a unique blend of veterans, young players and an international focus that fans can continue to be excit- ed about. The 2004 season includes 48 official events offering nearly $240 million in prize money and includes new title sponsors such as FBR, Booz Allen and Cialis. The World Golf Championships will hold two events in the United States, one in Ireland and another in Spain. The global reach of TOUR telecasts will extend to more than 140 countries around the world, including all three major networks in the United States and the top cable carriers. This exposure includes even more feature programming to profile our players and the second year of “PGA TOUR Sunday,” the one-hour preview show each Sunday on USA Network. The competitive accomplishments get most of the attention. But it’s the charitable effort that we cherish most of all. Through 2003, we will have contributed more than $800 million to charity since the first donation in 1938. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. It’s players such as Tom Watson donating a portion of his $1-million Charles Schwab Cup annuity to help his longtime friend and caddie Bruce Edwards battle ALS. Or Briny Baird teaming with his sponsor, Canon, to place the picture of a different missing child on his golf bag every week to raise awareness. It’s also the tournaments and volunteers making sure their respective communities benefit from our annual events. We look forward to working with you throughout the year. Our communications department staff at headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and at tournament media centers each week is ready to assist you. Please do not hesitate to ask for our help at any time. Thank you for your interest in the PGA TOUR and best wishes for a great year. Sincerely, Timothy W. HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.
