We show that Brown's conclusions are based on a problematic empirical design, which if corrected yields no evidence of a superstar effect. -

Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: We conducted surveys at the 2006 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro and the 2007 Wyndham Championship to determine a spectator golf profile and motivation. We performed regression analysis. Our explanatory variables were past attendance, motivations to attend tournament, importance of player’s names, and participation in peripheral activities. Our dependent variables were overall rating of the tournament and intention to attend a future tournament. Our analysis indicated that the effect of motivation and participation were significant on both dependent variables. The effects of past attendance on the dependent variable were significant only on intention of future attendance and the effects of names of players were found to be mixed. Miles Associate Everts, Head Coach Curley Jacob Cone, Trevor Vincent, Scott Redmond, Blake MacDonald, Marc Moyers, Mikey Jay Hardwick,Head Coach Bryce Chalkley, The 2011-2012 golf team at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech VIRGINIA TECH GOLF HOKIES2012 ON OUTLOOK THE PGA TOUR Newcomers Bolster Hokies’ Lineup The Virginia Tech Golf Team entered this season with the difficult task of replacing three seniors, all of whom had made significant academic and athletic contributions to the golf program. Aaron Eckstein was a two-time captain of the team; Garland Green finished his career ninth on the Tech’s All-Time Scoring list; and Marshall Bailey became only the second Hokie golfer to compete in four NCAA Championships. Head Coach Jay Hardwick’s task has been to continue to develop his returning players while integrating three promising freshmen into the team, all toward the ultimate goal of competing for the national championship. The season began just outside Chicago, Ill., with the Hokies making their first appearance in the Northern Intercollegiate at renowned Rich Harvest Farms, site of the 2009 Solheim Cup. The team finished fourth against a talented field, and junior Mikey Moyers tied for third individually. The Hokies then finished fifth at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club, much closer to home in Richmond, Va. Freshman Scott Vincent led the team, tying for 11th place on the same course that he had won the Valentine Invitational just a few weeks earlier. -

Open, Tom Carter won 3 times on the Nationwide Tour 2004 Pete Oakley won the Senior British Open 2005 Will Reilly was the PGA of America’s “ Junior Golf Leader” and Rich Steinmetz was on the PGA Cup Team 2006 Jim Furyk played on his fifth straight Ryder Cup Team, won the Vardon Trophy and two PGA Tour events 2007 In October the Philadelphia PGA and the Variety Club broke ground on the Variety Club’s 3-hole golf course 2008 Tom Carpus won the PGA of America’s Horton Smith Award and Hugh Reilly received the President Plaque 2009 Mark Sheftic finished second in the PGA Professional National Championship and played on the PGA Cup Team 2000 Jim Furyk won the Doral Open on the Doral Golf Resort’s Blue Course in the first week of March. The course nicknamed the “ Blue Monster” had been toughened in 1996 by adding 27 bunkers, which most of the play- ers didn’t care for. In 1999 the course had been reworked to its original Dick Wilson design, but now most of the players thought the course was too easy. -

Rosner* In light of the recent controversy surrounding Augusta National Golf Club's exclusionary membership policy, this Article highlights the myriad incentives and disincentives that Augusta and similar clubs havefor reforming such policies. The author acknowledges the economic importance of club membership in many busi- ness communities and addresses the extent to which club members' claims of rights of privacy andfree association are valid. The Article also considers the potential of judicialaction in promoting the adoption of more inclusive membership policy; the state action doctrine and the First Amendment right to freedom of association are discussed as frameworks under which litigants may potentially bring claims against clubs and the author assesses the likelihood of success under each. -

Franklin Templeton Shootout Purse Climbs To $2.5 Million NAPLES (April 20, 2004) – The Franklin Templeton Shootout announced that it would raise its purse to $2.5 million for the 2004 event. This is the seventh consecutive year the purse has been signi ficantly increased, and this year the winning team will split a tournament record $600,000. “Through our outstanding corporate partners, most notably Franklin Templeton, we are able to continue raising our purse, thereby attracting a world -class field,” Gr eg Norman said. “That allows us to host a quality event and reach our goal of providing significant funds for charity.” The Franklin Templeton Shootout was founded in 1989 as a result of Laura and Greg Norman's desire to raise money for charity and create a unique experience for PGA Tour players. The 2004 tournament will be held November 10 -14 at the Norman -designed Tiburon Golf Club on the grounds of The Ritz -Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. Tickets will go on sale in early September. This will mark the fourth year the event has called Southwest Florida home, and thanks to the generous support of Franklin Templeton and other supporting sponsors the purse has increased a remarkable 25 percent since relocating to Naples. “The increased purse will continue to attr act the world's best players to Naples,” said Tournament Director Taylor Ives. “The 2003 field was perhaps our strongest to date and we are confident the 2004 field will again raise the bar.” Spectators and a national television audience saw another dramat ic conclusion a year ago. -
