Inoh’s team investigated coastlines, major roads, and geographical features such as rivers, lakes, temples, forts, village names, etc. The survey was successively conducted ten times from 1800 to 1816. Inoh’s map is known as the first scientific map in Japan using a systematic method. However, the actual survey was conducted only for 75% of the coastlines in Japan and the remaining 25% was drawn by Inoh’s estimation (observation). This study investigated how the non-surveyed (estimated) coastlines were distributed in the map and why the actual survey was not conducted in these non-surveyed coastlines. Using GIS, we overlaid the geometrically corrected Inoh’s map (Digital Inoh’s Map Professional Edition) with the current map published by the Geospatial Information Authority (GSI) of Japan for examining the spatial difference. We found that the non-surveyed coastlines were in places where the practice of actual surveying was topographically difficult because of the limited surveying technology of those days. -

The historiography of Eco City Tokyo: A Neoliberal Sustainable Urban City? Uppsala, Department of Archaeology and Ancient History. Trend of Sustainability is applied to city planning and try to achieve the sustainable development of a city and a town that is generous to people, environment and vitalise the economy at the same time. Initiatives for sustainable city planning in Japan is organized by the national Government, so called, FutureCity Initiative. This initiative enables to local city and representative to participate and act for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) within a city and aim sustainable development. Chiyoda city is one of the cities elected as an Eco-Model City’s FutureCity project. One of their approaches is to cooperate with local businesses group in Otemachi, Marunouchi, Yurakucho district (OMY district) to solve the environmental and social issues and contribute for their city to be sustainable. This thesis focuses on this OMY district that support a huge part of Japanese economy and aim to be the world most sustainable urban city to lead a sustainable earth in the future. When business leaders become main actors of sustainable city making, their business and economic knowledge and the interest to sustainability would be combined and influence the definition and understanding of ‘sustainability.’ It is important to acknowledge that the process of meaning making for sustainability, from a business perspective in capitalism and neoliberal society, has been influenced by historical factors that human beings has been prioritising economic growth and ideology of capitalism and affect the environment and vice versa. -
15 to Enhance and Strengthen Port Functions and Measures for Cargo
To enhance and strengthen port functions and measures for cargo collection, taking into consideration the conditions surrounding the Port of Kawasaki in recent years, such as wide-area linkage of the three Keihin ports (Port of Kawasaki, Port of Yokohama, and Port of Tokyo), and the Port of Kawasaki's selection as a Strategic International Container Port, the City of Kawasaki revised the harbor plan for the Port of Kawasaki, which focuses on the years from 2023 to 2028, in November 2014. This plan plays an extremely important role as a guideline for development, use, and conservation of the Port of Kawasaki, based on the role of this port within the three Keihin ports, as well as demands from port-related personnel, location companies, citizens, and the government. In an aim to increase industrial competitive strength in the metropolis, and protect and develop industries, employment, and livelihood based on reinforcing the linkage among the three Keihin ports, policies for the harbor plan are being established for each function in order to realize a Port of Kawasaki that supports industrial activities and contributes to the stability and improvement of the local economy and civilian life. [Industry/logistics functions] Strengthen logistics functions by reorganizing and expanding port functions [Disaster-prevention functions] Strengthen support functions at times when a large-scale earthquake occurs [Energy functions] Maintain and support energy supply functions [Environment/interaction functions] Enhance amenity space that makes use of the characteristics of the port space 15 Port capabilities are a premise that determines the scale and layout of port facilities, and the cargo amount handled is a basic indicator that represents port capabilities. -

Abstract The relative advantage among industries has changed remarkably and is expected to bring the alternatives of progressive and declining urban structural change. The emerging industries to utilize ICT, AI, IoT, financial and green technologies foster the social innovation connected with reforming the urban structure. The hypotheses of the shrinking city forecast that the decline of main industries has brought the various urban problems including problems of employment and infrastructure. But the strin- gent budget restriction makes limit the region on the social and market system that the government propels the replacement of industries and urban infrastructures. By developing the two markets model of urban structural changes based on Tanaka (1994) and (2013), we make clear theoretically and empirically that the social inno- vation could bring spreading effects within the limited area of the region, and that the social and economic network structure prevents the entire region from corrupting. The results of this model analysis are investigated by moves of the municipal average income par taxpayer of the Tokyo Area in the period of 2011 to 2014 experimentally. Abstract This case study deals with the failed bid by Calgary Olympic Development Association to host the 1972 Winter Olympics in Banff National Park. The bid committee argued that the international exposure garnered by a locality would result in economic growth and amateur athletic development. Opponents to the use of a national park as an Olympic site challenged the importance of the Games to Banff’s identity as a world class destination, and the recreational role of national parks. Through textual analysis of newspaper and archival documents, and interviews, the case of the failed 1972 Winter Olympic bid reveals discourses of the role of national parks in the 1960s.
