Professor Dominy, the Charles Hansen Professor of Anthropology, is an anthropologist and evolutionary biologist. He studies the behavior, ecology, and functional morphology of humans and nonhuman primates. He has received grants or fellowships from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, Packard Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. He is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Explorers Club, the Royal Geographic Society, and the Royal Anthropological Institute. His research philosophy is to integrate fieldwork with mechanical, molecular, and isotopic analyses in order to better understand how and why adaptive shifts occurred during primate evolution. In 2009, he was named a “Brilliant 10” scientist under the age of 40 by Popular Science magazine. Professor Dominy received his Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong and his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University.

What to Expect This is a moderately active trip for travelers who are flexible, comfortable traveling with a group, and can handle the vagaries of travel with good humor. Japan is normally cold in February with temperatures (outside of Tokyo) that can vary from the single digits to the low 30s (°F) during the day, and from negative temperatures to the low 20s in the early mornings and evenings. There will be walks of up to three miles on this program, sometimes on paths covered in snow. The walk from our hotel to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen (Monkey Park) to see snow monkeys is one mile each way on mostly flat trails with some slopes and stairs. The trail will likely be snow-covered.
