The fastest M&NW VTTA rider with the best aggregate standard times from both the Nova CC / M&DLCA 25 and the Seamons CC 25 (29/07/17) to hold the VTTA Manchester & North West Group 25 Mile Championship Cup for 12 months. J4/8 Course details: Start – On B5081 (Byley Road) at the 1st field gate after Kings Lane, and in line with the left-hand field gate post approx. ½ mile south of the B5082 (Three Greyhounds Public House). Proceed south along the B5081 to Byley Crossroads 0.7 miles, left along Moss Lane/Byley Lane to join A50 at Cranage 2.8. Left along A50 to Woodside 3.8, left along B5082, straight on at the Three Greyhounds to join A556 at Rudheath 7.9. Left on A556 to King Street Island 8.1, take the 1st exit, A530/B5309 to Centurion Way Traffic Lights 11.7, filter left along Centurion Way via small island to Byley Road Corner 12.3. Left along B5081 via Byley crossroads to Three Greyhounds PH 15.2. Left along B5082 to complete another circuit, Rudheath 18.2, King Street Island 18.3, Centurion Way Lights 21.9, Byley Road Corner 22.4. To Finish on B5081 on the opposite side of the road from a concrete manhole cover in the verge, approx 5 yards beyond the start lay-by, 25.0 miles. Directions to the start Turn left out of HQ through Goostrey village, straight on at Booth Bed Lane crossroads, then next right fork (New Platt Lane). Straight across at A50 to join the course (WITH CAUTION) right onto Pennys Lane, and left at the Three Greyhounds PH (Byley Road). The start is on the left ½ mile south of the Three Greyhounds. Warnings: Care at road junctions: Riders must exercise caution at all junctions. Any competitor whose riding line causes her/him to cross the white line when approaching or leaving a junction will be liable to disqualification from the event and may be reported to the District Committee for further disciplinary action. U turns: Any rider making a U turn in the vicinity of the start or finish will be disqualified. Observers will be used in this event. Parking: No parking at the start or near the timekeeper at the finish. Do not obstruct or distract the timekeepers. A556: Riders must exercise extreme caution when joining the A556. Proceed with caution keeping close to the verge. Any rider who joins the A556 in a manner which causes him/her to cross the dividing line of the 2-lane carriageway will be disqualified from the event and may be reported to the District Committee for disciplinary action. Finish: Riders finishing must take care to stop safely and avoid other riders who may be continuing to ride round the circuit. IN THE INTERESTS OF YOUR OWN SAFETY, Cycling Time Trials and the event promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an internationally accepted safety standard. In accordance with Regulation 15 ALL JUNIOR competitors must wear Protective Hard Shell Helmets. It is recommended that a working rear light, either flashing or constant, is fitted to the machine in a position visible to following road users and is active whilst the machine is in use. The M&DLCA 25 will precede this event.     TheCYCLE Pennells TOURING’S FIRST COUPLE ne day in August 1886, artist and cycling enthusiast Joseph BY DAVE BUCHANAN Pennell fell into conversation with two keen cyclists Oin a tavern in Yorkshire, England. The local wheelmen mentioned a recent magazine article about tricycling in Italy. It was written and illustrated, they explained, by “those Pennells” — the well-known American illustrator who “went around with his wife or his sister or something all over creation.” Joseph nodded politely and changed the subject. Little did the Yorkshiremen know that they were, in fact, talking to one of those very Pennells. This story, told by Joseph’s wife (not his sister), Elizabeth Robins Pennell, in The Life and Letters of Joseph Pennell, speaks to the minor celebrity enjoyed in the mid-1880s by this unconventional husband-and-wife creative duo from Philadelphia. In the final decades of the 19th century, they explored England and Europe by cycle and went on to publish five illustrated books about their trips, including A Canterbury Pilgrimage, An Italian Pilgrimage, and Over the Alps on a Bicycle, and dozens of illustrated magazine articles. The Pennells, with Elizabeth writing and Joseph illustrating, produced some of the earliest and best cycle- travel writing in the 1880s and ‘90s. In the process, they helped invent both leisure cycle touring and couples cycle touring. Unlike their more famous contemporary, Thomas Stevens — who set off on a high wheel bicycle in 1884 on a sensational globe-circling adventure, chronicled in his popular book Around the MUSEUM VICTORIA COURTESY ALBERT AND FREDERICK HOLLYER, World on a Bicycle (1887) — the Pennells didn’t seek high adventure in the remote outposts of the globe.

Most people love to ride and learning to ride a bicycle is a natural part of growing up for most children. It is fun and it is often something that families enjoy doing together. For a child affected by a rare chromosome or gene disorder and having physical and/or learning difficulties it can be a good way of increasing muscle tone and exercising.
