Without any doubt, the history of vineyards, grown here for thousands of years, and the history of Vaucluse are inex- tricably intertwined. Each in their time, Greeks, Romans, the Popes, the Jews - not to mention the mighty Rhône River, have all had a decisive influence on both. Three appellations cover the area here – Côtes du Rhône, AOC Ventoux, and AOC Luberon. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage has attained international fame and more than half of the villages in Vaucluse make their living from wine. Teams from some 20 countries are expec- ted to attend, some of them newcomers. Teams attending: France, Belgium, Luxem- bourg, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ger- many, the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China, South Africa, Brazil, Venezue- la, Andorra, Quebec, Poland, Argentina and the USA. As in previous years, this challenge will involve blind tasting of 12 wines from all over the world. Teams of Championnat 2014 Maison Ayala en Champagne©J.-C. Gutner four tasters will try them. For each wine, the team must state the main grape variety, country of production, appellation, wine-grower and vintage. The team with the most points will become the 2015 world champions after the Belgians in 2013 and the French in 2014. To make it an entertaining, friendly event, each team will be wearing a special outfit in their country’s colours for this challenge geared around sharing the love of wine. After the competition and the award ceremony, a friendly meal will be organised for all competitors. New The Châteauneuf du Pape’s wine museum in a new look The Wine Museum of the Maison Brotte in Châteauneuf- du-Pape has seen a range of transformations since being founded in 1972. The most recent dates back to spring 2014 and offers, besides a striking set design, a fun and educational insight on the wines of the Rhone Valley, and those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in particular. The idea was to pre-empt any questions from visitors about the wines of this flagship designation, without becoming daunting. Successfully done! The visit ends on a tasting of the wines. Unused to working with metal, equipped with spray cans and brushes, they soon adapted to the support, corrugated iron, wooden slats and rust. Some found inspiration in Nature, others in Greek mythology, yet others worked in the idea of ‘Exquisite Corpses’ borrowed from Surrealism... This yielded the display of some thirty brightly coloured trailers on the village square from early September, for an exceptio- nal opening around the work of these vintner-artist pairs. For the last ©Syndicat des Vignerons de Cairanne three years, forty or so brightly coloured trailers were on show in the village square, before they went back to their most important job, travel- ling round the local roads during the grape harvest. If you follow them, your curiosity will lead you to estates where the winegrowers will welcome you with open arms. The most successful trailers were given awards by a jury of artists. New The Domaine des Peyres in Luberon: Wine, Art de Vivre and Contemporary Art After a long period in the doldrums, this estate boasting 20 hectares of terraced vineyards and a good dozen hectares of forest and scrubland, has now been taken over by Georges Antoun, hote- lier, and Patricia Alexandre (a former contributor to the Gault Millau guides). This time-honoured site, with the former Roman road, the Via Domi- tia, cutting through it, now boasts five prestigious gîtes. Fully renovated, this place combines art gal- lery, tasting-room and state-of-the-art vathouse. The vineyard has been reorganised, tip-top techni- cal facilities have been set up and a «wine resort» has been added in the fully renovated farmhouse. Leveraging the talent of local artisans, the estate has recovered its former glory, giving visitors a chance to taste the wines produced on the estate in©Domaine the newly des Peyre refurbished former stables, and admire the various works of art dotted around the estate and in the galle- ry. Once blossoming has occurred, the rate of ripening is has little room for variation. A grape, after all, can only ripen so fast. But there are factors at work that do effect ripening. Others will be difficult to purchase. Sammy has been in discussions with growers and will let us know February 16, 2011 when he knows more. Red Bordeaux Tasting But this is also a time to think about purchasing barrels. May15th is the deadline for purchasing February 27, 2011 barrels at Bouchard cooperages at a discount and with no shipping cost. They make Damy, Vicard, Argyle Winery Tour Billon and Cadus barrels. All their barrels are quite good, although each provides different component to a wine.

    RHONE VALLEY WINES Red River Valley American Wine Society Wine Tasting - 12 November 2011 HTTP://GREGINND.COM/RRVAWS RHONE WINES From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and produces numerous wines under various Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) designations. The region's major appellation in production volume is Côtes du Rhône AOC. The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern Rhône (referred to in French as Rhône septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (in French Rhône méridional). The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Viognier grapes. The southern sub-region produces an array of red, white and rosé wines, often blends of several grapes such as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. History The first cultivated vines in the region were probably planted around 600 BC. The origins of the two most important grape varieties in the northern Rhone (Syrah and Viognier) are subject to speculation. Some say the Greeks were responsible for bringing the Syrah grape from the Persian city of Shiraz. Others say the grape came 50 years later when Greeks fled from the Persian king Cyrus I. Yet others say the grape came from the Sicilian city of Syracuse, whence circa 280 AD the Romans brought it and the Viognier grape. Meanwhile extensive DNA typing and viticultural research has led scientists to conclude that Syrah originated in the Rhône region itself.     DOMAINE DE LA VERRIERE (France, Ventoux, Goult) BACKGROUND: This beautiful 28 hectares domaine sits above the Luberon Valley across from Bonnieux and Lacoste and benefits from its 250 meter elevation. Historically this estate was a one of the most relevant properties of King Rene of Provence in 1470 who established a permanent art glass exposition coming from Italy and hence giving the name to the estate (verre in French means glass). In 1969 Bernard Maubert fell in love with this privileged site and in 1985 his son Jacques joined him in this life long wine passion. Nowadays fifty-something Jacques and Veronique Maubert hand craft 7500 cases annually (90.000 bottles) while limiting exports to 20% of sales. From vineyard management to bottling all the steps are meticolously followed by Jacques who is a classic demanding vigneron: «Viticulture is part of our family genes as we have been doing this traditional job in the last century». After an internship in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a beautiful hideaway in California, with its new established know how, Jacques finds the helm of the domaine, yet still practicing his father farming methods and combining them with modern techniques. Today, its 28 hectares are now converted to produce organic wine. Its range consists of 4 reds, 3 whites and 3 roses. Special mention deserves his rosé Domaine de la Verrière which is nationally wise praised by wine critics. VENTOUX AOC: Established in 1973 (and known as Côtes du Ventoux AOC until 2008) this wine-growing AOC is located in the southeastern region of the Rhône valley where the wines are produced in 51 communes of the Vaucluse département along the lower slopes of the Ventoux mountain and at the foot of the Vaucluse Mountains.

LES PRODUITS EN CONCOURS Le Concours Général Agricole met en compétition les meilleurs produits des régions françaises : vins, apéritifs, bières, charcuteries, cidres et poirés, confitures, eaux de vie, huiles de noix, huîtres, jus de fruits, miels et hydromels, piment d'Espelette, pommeau, produits issus de palmipèdes gras (foie gras, magret séché…), produits laitiers, produits oléicoles, rhums et punchs, safran, truite fumée, vanilles, vins de liqueur, volaille abattue et découpes de volaille. Chaque année, il s'ouvre à de nouveaux produits : c'est ainsi que les vanilles sont entrées au Concours en 2006, la charcuterie en 2008, la charcuterie fermière en 2012, le safran et les confitures en 2013.
