Queries regarding rights and licensing should be submitted to: [email protected]. iii PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT The FAO Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity for the Near East and North Africa (WSI) was initiated in 2013, in response to a strong request from the 31st Session of the FAO Near East and North Africa (NENA) Regional Conference held in Rome in May 2012, and impacted by outcomes from the Kyoto Framework Agreement 2005–2015, within which lack of water resources is seen as a potential disaster scenario for the region. This document provides results from a WSI sub-project on the use of non-conventional water resources in integrated agriculture - aquaculture (IAA) systems as a means to produce more food per unit of water used, using case studies from three selected countries: Algeria, Egypt and Oman. These countries were identified as representative of cross-regional differences in non-conventional water use for integration of agriculture and aquaculture in the NENA region. Within the three countries National Task Forces (NTFs) where set up and with the support of national partners, initiated country-based reviews, undertaken by NTFs and national consultants. These reviews included a review of IAA activities undertaken in each country, farm visits, questionnaire surveys and interviews. This was supplemented by farmer to farmer visits that enabled sharing of best management practices on IAA. Activity was concluded with a regional workshop held in Cairo, Egypt on 25–26 June 2019. The report summarizes evidence of current IAA activity in the three partner countries participating in the project, with full country reports available as appendices. This document is of relevance to IAA practitioners, industry organizations, farmer associations, aquaculture policy makers and other stakeholders in all countries within the NENA region where there is a need to promote the smart use of water to maximize production of food and improve food security, both agricultural and aquaculture-based, in arid regions, using where possible non- conventional and other sources of water. The document concludes with a roadmap for upscaling of IAA in arid lands, developed by the experts who attended the Cairo workshop that should provide a sound basis for future development of Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture within the NENA region. Received 27 April, 2014; Accepted 13 November, 2014 The botanical and edaphic inventory investigations of the spontaneous flora distribution in the regions of Ouargla and Ghardaïa revealed the presence of 56 taxa of which 32 were ephemeral and 24 vivacious. The sweeping operation of 6 stations over these two regions showed an abundant richness estimated to 39 species localized mainly in the beds of Wadis and distributed as follows: Reg (19), Sebkha (7), Erg (6) and Hamada (5). The average richness of species was about 4, 83 in the beds of Wadis and 0, 83 in Hamadas. The abundance and dominance of plants varied within the same species from one station to another. In fact, severe climato-edaphic conditions gave rise to isolated life. For example, Chamephytes dominate in dry and moderately humid environments as in the Reg of Hassi Ben Abdellah and Wadi N’sa.

In this vein, the study seeks to answer the main question: to what extent the Gulf regimes succeeded in facing the repercussions of the Arab uprisings? To answer this question, the study adopts the theoretical framework of the functional-structural approach, which has been developed by Gabriel Almond. This approach contains four main functional requirements, which are: structure, function, performance style and capabilities. The study has focused on system performance and capabilities in order to analyze the outputs, capabilities and performance of the Gulf regimes, and the extent to which the interaction of these capabilities contributes to the stability of the political system and increase its ability to adapt to changing circumstances and challenges. The study has reached many findings, the most important of which is that the Gulf countries have had the ability to face the repercussions of the popular uprisings, leading to the decline of them.

Egyptian Gardens Alison Daines he gardens of ancient Egypt were an integral component of their religion Tand surroundings. The gardens cannot be excavated like buildings and tombs can be, but archeological relics remain that have helped determine their construction, function, and symbolism. Along with these excavation reports, representations of gardens and plants in painting and text are available (fig. 1).1 These portrayals were frequently located on tomb and temple walls. Assuming these representations were based on reality, the gardens must have truly been spectacular. Since the evidence of gardens on excavation sites often matches wall paintings, scholars are able to learn a lot about their purpose.2 Unfortunately, despite these resources, it is still difficult to wholly understand the arrangement and significance of the gardens. In 1947, Marie-Louise Buhl published important research on the symbol- ism of local vegetation. She drew conclusions about tree cults and the specific deity that each plant or tree represented. In 1994 Alix Wilkinson published an article on the symbolism and forma- tion of the gardens, and in 1998 published a book on the same subject.

Oman is a monarchy in which the Sultan of Oman exercises ultimate authority but its parliament has some legislative and oversight powers. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) listed Oman in November 2010, from among 135 countries of the world, as the most-improved & developed country during the preceding 40 years. As per international indices, Oman is one of the most developed and prosperous countries of the Arab world. Since ancient times India has been the largest producer of spices in the world. Spice became one of the first and most enduring links between Asia and Europe. It was this spice trade that led to intense competition among various European nations. The demand for Indian spices was very high in Europe and elsewhere. India export various spices to different countries of world including Oman. The cuisine of Oman is a mixture of several staples of Asian foods. Most Omani dishes tend to contain a rich mixture of spices, herbs, and marinades.
