Ankrah was also the inventor of the Pornstar Martini, of course, a drink that he launched as a ready-serve. He was quoted saying “I called it Pornstar because I thought it was something that a Pornstar would drink, there’s nothing sexual there”. DRINKS LIST 2 COCKTAILS £8.50 ESPRESSO MARTINI Vodka / Tia Maria / Coffee The story goes that British bartending guru Dick Bradsell created the drink—originally called The Vodka Espresso then the Pharmaceutical Stimulant—at Fred’s Club in the late 1980s, when a young model, who Bradsell claims is now world famous, sidled up to the bar and asked for something to “wake me up and f**k me up”. His solution was a combination of vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur and sugar, shaken into a frothy mix of bittersweet addiction. DRINKS LIST 3 COCKTAILS £8.50 FRENCH MARTINI Vodka / Chambord / Pineapple Juice / Raspberry French Martini was invented in the 1980s at one of Keith McNally’s New York City bars. It next appeared on the drinks menu at McNally’s Balthazar in SoHo in 1996. ... The key ingredient that makes a Martini “French” is Chambord, which is a black raspberry liqueur that has been produced in France since 1685. DRINKS LIST 4 COCKTAILS £8.50 COSMOPOLITAN Vodka / Cointreau / Lime Juice / Cranberry Juice Though this drink’s origin is often-disputed, the most recognized creation of the Cosmo is credited to Toby Cecchini, of The Odeon in Manhattan in 1987. According to Kyle Ford, a rep for Cointreau, he was “introduced to the Cosmopolitan by co- worker Melissa Huffsmith. He put a fresh spin on the known South Beach and San Francisco versions [that used Rose’s Lime Cordial].” DRINKS LIST 5 COCKTAILS £8.50 MOJITO Classic / Strawberry / Passionfruit The Mojito has got to be one of the most easily recognisable cocktails. The drink has a very interesting past that links back to the 1500s when it was considered to be a drink for the Cuban working class. The most widely believed story of its origins involves a 16th century Cuban cocktail named ‘El Draque,’ which was named after Sir Francis Drake, which involved an early, more crude version of rum called ‘aguardiente,’ fresh mint, sugar, and lime DRINKS LIST 6 COCKTAILS £8.50 SOUR Whisley / Amaretto / Pisco The combination of base spirit, water, sugar and citrus mean that a sour is basically a scaled down punch. Early sours did not include egg white, however as Robert Vermiere says “Just a few drops of egg improve all sours” and we think he’s pretty spot on. DRINKS LIST 7 COCKTAILS £8.50 DARK N STORMY BRAMBLE Dark Rum / Lime Juice / Bitters Gin / Chambord / Lemon Juice / Blackberry Bermuda, where the Dark ‘n’ Stormy was invented. A highball made of spicy ginger beer and rich Black Seal dark rum, the drink allegedly got its name from an old sailor who compared the drink’s murky hue to the color of storm clouds. It’s an unproven legend, but the drink’s connection to the joys and dangers of seafaring is well-established. DRINKS LIST 8 COCKTAILS £8.50 BRAMBLE Gin / Chambord / Lemon Juice / Blackberry The Bramble is the brainchild of Dick Bradsell, aka ‘The Cocktail King.’ The blackberry drink is arguably the most famous of his creations from his time at Fred’s Club Soho in the 1980’s, and is often compared to that of Jerry Thomas’ Gin Fix, swapping the latter’s raspberry syrup for blackberry liqueur. DRINKS LIST 9 COCKTAILS £8.50 OLD FASHIONED Whiskey / Angostura Bitters The Old-fashioned was created by a bartender at the Pendennis Club in Louisville. The club maintains that the bartender was Martin Cuneo, and that he made the drink for a Kentucky Colonel (and bourbon distiller) named James E. Pepper sometime between 1889 and 1895. DRINKS LIST 10 COCKTAILS £8.50 SINGAPORE SLING Gin / Cherry Brandy / Benedictine / Grenadine Created by Bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore, this is widely regarded as the country’s national drink. At the time, women could not be seen to consume alcohol in public and so the talented bartender seeing a niche in the market, created this drink ressembling fruit juice.
