Mr. Peter Jennings ABC News

Dear Peter:

I wanted to take a moment to comment on your coverage of the President's recent visit to Mexico. Your decision to launch ABC's Mexico City bureau during the trip was an ideal way to frame the story, and helped to provide the "front and center" coverage that helped set you apart from the rest.

You and your colleagues should be proud of the insight and high level of cultural understanding you brought to your newscast, and I wanted you to know that your extia effort did not go unnoticed.

You have my thanks. Sincerely, X

John Kasich veered from the campaign trail, ' stening with admiration to tales from baseball legend Bob Feller. ""This is just so awesome,'' said Kasich, trying on shirts and caps and ^-dming at a brand-new signed autographed baseball. ""I could run this place and be happy.'' Winking at a reporter, Kasich chuckled, ""I told you that if I ran I wouldn't be like all those other turkeys. ""Seriously, if I do this thing will you help me?'' he asked Feller. ""Any way I can,'' said the Hall of Fame pitcher. With that, Kasich plunged back into campaign mode, heading for the latest stop on his ""back in black tour'' where he's seeking to show youthful exuberance as he ponders a bid for the Republican presidential nomination. The tour theme borrows heavily from rock music, and Kasich is already giving himself high marks. ""We're not exactly the greatest tour in the world, but we're a close second to the great Rolling Stones tour,'' said the Ohio Republican. Kasich is in the midst if a five-day swing through the state where precinct caucuses launch the presidential nominating season. Kasich is little known in Iowa and faces long odds in seeking to run from the House, but he was impressing some. ""I think he's got that energetic forceful nature that some people have felt is lacking in some of the people running for president,'' said House Majority Leader Brent Siegrist, a Council Bluffs Republican. ""That will be attractive to a lot of young, conservative Republicans.'' In his effort, Kasich seeks to take credit for helping form a budget agreement with President Clinton that he said has the potential of keeping the economy humming and make voters forget some of the politically painful lecisions that went into the balanced budget effort. ""There's a real cause for optimism,'' said Kasich. ""I've done root canal for a lot of my life where I've forced people to make hard decisions.'' Along the way, Kasich has jousted with his own party, fighting a highway construction measure he labels as pure political pork. ""We went to Washington to change the culture and habits of Washington,'' said Kasich. ""This is a throwback.'' Using an endless stream of sports analogies, Kasich says he'll keep Republican feet to the fire, if nothing else, with his stumping. ""I've been telling the guys we've got to get off the stool and get into the ring and start going at it again,'' said Kasich. ""I don't want to just stay where we are. I want to do a heck of a lot more.'' While Kasich hasn't made a decision about seeking the GOP nomination, he said he's encouraged by his early testing of the waters and that he set aside significant amounts of campaign time for important early states like Iowa. ""There aren't many cynics in Iowa, which is why I like the state so much,'' said Kasich. While Kasich seeks to bring some youthful vigor to the race, he's careful to pay homage to traditional GOP issues. ""Balancing the budget is as old-fashioned an American value as you can find,'' said Kasich. ""We have a real stake in not sliding out of the budget agreement, which is why I am so passionate in terms of defending it, even when I suspect that my own party might be getting a little weak-kneed about it.'' Aides stepped in to end a rapid-fire exchange with reporters, gently suggesting it was time to move along. ""I was just starting to enjoy this,'' Kasich said. ""I could go on for another hour.'' **** filed by:APW-(IA) on 04/07/98 at 15:25EST **** THE WHITE HOUSE
