ADDENDUM TO THE SPECIAL FILE ON THE ASSASSINATION OF JOHN F. KENNEDY

The "Special File on the Assassination of John F. Kennedy" consists of original material and xerox copies brought together in 1967 from various White House and Vice Presidential files at the time that William Manchester's book, The Death of a President, was published. In 1966, Jim Bishop sent a draft of his book, A Day in the Life of President Johnson, to the President before publishing.

Early in the history of the LBJ Library, the staff thought of the "Special File" as a body of materials removed from their original locations to serve as a temporary reference file for use in preparing answers to allegations made in the Manchester book. The staff refiled some of the original materials in their original locations. At that time, the staff removed the Bishop material and the material from the "Special File" and maintained it as a separate collection. In 1998, the LBJ Library staff decided that provenance dictated that these materials be reincorporated into the "Special File."

ORAL HISTORIES

Transcripts of oral history interviews may be consulted at the Library or borrowed through interlibrary loan by writing to the Supervisory Archivist, Lyndon B. Johnson Library, 2313 Red River Street, Austin, Texas, 78705. Interviews with the following people contain material on the Kennedy assassination. Those marked with an (A) are available and are open for research. Contact the Supervisory Archivist regarding the procedure. A complete list of oral histories is available and is maintained in a card file in the Reading Room.

The LBJ Library Oral History Collection is composed of interviews conducted for the LBJ Library under four separate projects: those done under the auspices of the National Archives; the White House during the Johnson administration; the University of Texas Oral History Project; and the LBJ Library Oral History Project. The names of interviewees who have participated in more than one of these projects are repeated on this list to highlight this fact. Names of those with multiple interviews done by the same project are repeated when terms of access to their various interviews vary. Otherwise, the name of an interviewee is listed once even though he or she may have given more than one interview.

Interviews which have been completed and accessioned into the Library's collection are followed by an alphabetical symbol in parentheses describing their status and terms of access. Those interviews without a symbol are in various stages of processing and therefore are not yet available for research unless specifically authorized by the interviewee.

Please note that special oral history interviews in the Library's custody are not included on this list. These special interviews include those recorded by researchers, by federal departments

RECORDINGS AND TRANSCRIPTS OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS AND MEETINGS, 1963-69

The collection includes over 5,000 recordings of conversations with members of Congress, other public officials, civil rights leaders, members of the press, friends, and family. JFK assassination-related recordings and transcripts identified by the Library staff from four periods during the administration were opened in increments from September 30, 1993, through April 15, 1994 (please consult the finding aid for that collection for further information). The recordings are available at the Johnson Library, and the JFK Assassination Records Collection, located at the National Archives at College Park, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, Maryland 20740, has copies of these recordings and transcripts.

Since the original opening of JFK assassination-related recordings and transcripts, several conversations have been declassified or opened. On September 18, 1998, the Library opened conversations with and about Mrs. Kennedy which had previously been restricted. Transcripts of JFK assassination-related conversations which were previously closed are also included.

Many of the recordings were NOT TRANSCRIBED. The transcripts that were made were prepared in the White House and during the writing of the President's memoirs, The Vantage Point, published in 1971. Researchers should be cautioned that these transcripts are not always reliable and should never be used without checking them against the actual recordings to assure accuracy.

VANTAGE POINT FOOTNOTES

OFFICE FILES OF WALTER W. JENKINS (SHORTHAND NOTES)

Walter Jenkins began working on Lyndon Johnson's staff in 1939 when Johnson was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Jenkins continued on Johnson's staff through the Senate and Vice Presidential periods. After Johnson became President, Jenkins was named a White House Special Assistant and functioned as Johnson's chief of staff until he left the staff in

October 1964. He worked a wide range of areas including domestic affairs, personnel and budget issues, and congressional liaison. Jenkins spent many hours on the telephone, and he made shorthand notes on his conversations. LBJ Library staff and a former member of the President's staff who could read shorthand, assisted the archives staff in identifying conversations related to the assassination of President Kennedy. A few of the Jenkins notes were transcribed in the White House and were filed in the Office Files of Mildred Stegall and Walter W. Jenkins.
