Lecythidoideae is limited to the Neotropics and is the only naturally occurring subfamily of Le- cythidaceae in the New World. A subset of genera with zygomorphic flowers—Bertholletia, Corythophora, Eschweilera and Lecythis—comprises a group of about 125 species called the Bertholletia clade. A previous study based on plastid ndhF and trnL-F genes supported the monophyly of Corythophora but suggested that Eschweilera and Lecythis are not mono- phyletic. Using this study as a baseline, we sampled more taxa and sequenced more loci to address the taxonomic problems of the ambiguous genera and to determine relationships within the Bertholletia clade. Our results support the monophyly of the Bertholletia clade as previously circumscribed. In addition, Corythophora is monophyletic, and the two accessions of Bertholletia excelsa come out together on the tree. Results of the simultaneous analysis do not support the monophyly of Lecythis or Eschweilera.

    A NEW LEPANTHES (ORCHIDACEAE: PLEUROTHALLIDINAE) FROM PENÍNSULA DE OSA, PUNTARENAS, COSTA RICA ISLER F. CHINCHILLA,1–3 REINALDO AGUILAR,4 AND DIEGO BOGARÍN1,5,6 Abstract. Lepanthes is one of the most species-rich genera of orchids in the Neotropics, with most of the species found in medium to high elevation forests and few species in lowlands. We describe and illustrate Lepanthes osaensis, a new species from the very wet lowland forest of Península de Osa, Costa Rica. It is similar to Lepanthes cuspidata but differs mostly in the vinous leaves; smaller sepals; the narrower, bilobed petals; and the smaller lip with triangular blades. Notes on its distribution, habitat, flowering, and conservation status, as well as discussion of a taxon with similar morphology, are provided. Keywords: Lepanthes cuspidata, orchid endemism, Pleurothallidinae taxonomy, twig epiphytes, very wet lowland forest Lepanthes Sw. is one of the most species-rich genera of Jiménez and Grayum, 2002; Bogarín and Pupulin, 2007; Pleurothallidinae (Orchidaceae), with over 1200 species Rakosy et al., 2013) and the continued long-term fieldwork from southern Mexico and the Antilles to Bolivia and by the second author (RA). A sample consisted of both sexes of Centris (Centris) decolorata, C., (C.) smithii and C. (Hemisiella) lanipes, with the bulk of individuals being males of C. decolorata. The unusual features of the aggregation were its persistence during daylight hours, the presence of multiple species, and the presence of females. The three species are new records for Anguilla. In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. The monophyly of the order is supported strongly by several studies, although interfamilial relationships are still poorly resolved and vary between studies; a situation common in higher level phylogenetic studies of ancient, rapid radiations. In this study, we carried out simulation analyses with previously published matK and rbcL regions. The results of our simulation analyses have shown that Fabales phylogeny can be solved and the 5,000 bp fast-evolving data type may be sufficient to resolve the Fabales phylogeny question. In our simulation analyses, while support increased as the sequence length did (up until a certain point), resolution showed mixed results. Interestingly, the accuracy of the phylogenetic trees did not improve with the increase in sequence length. Therefore, this study sounds a note of caution, with respect to interpreting the results of the “more data” approach, because the results have shown that large datasets can easily support an arbitrary root of Fabales.
