The Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Baylisascaris

Heckmann2 and Fattaneh Mikaeili3 Abstract Background: Baylisascaris devosi is an intestinal nematode found in several carnivores including fsher, wolverine, Beech marten, American marten and sable in diferent parts of the world, but this nematode has not been reported from Pine marten. Therefore, this study aimed to identify Baylisascaris isolated from a Pine marten in Iran using mor- phological and molecular approaches. Methods: Specimens of B. devosi were collected from one road-killed Pine marten in northern Iran. Morphological features were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and ion sectioning. The molecular characterization was carried out using partial Cox1, LSU rDNA and ITS-rDNA genes. Results: The nematodes isolated from the Pine marten were confrmed to be B. devosi based on the morphological features and the sequence of ribosomal and mitochondrial loci. X-ray scans (EDAX) were completed on gallium cut structures (papillae, eggs, male spike and mouth denticles) of B. devosi using a dual-beam scanning electron micro- scope. The male spike and mouth denticles had a high level of hardening elements (Ca, P, S), helping to explain the chemical nature and morphology of the worm. Based on these genetic marker analyses, our sequence had the great- est similarity with Russian B. devosi isolated from sable. Conclusions: In this study, to our knowledge, the occurrence of B. -

(Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) from Península De Osa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
A NEW LEPANTHES (ORCHIDACEAE: PLEUROTHALLIDINAE) FROM PENÍNSULA DE OSA, PUNTARENAS, COSTA RICA ISLER F. CHINCHILLA,1–3 REINALDO AGUILAR,4 AND DIEGO BOGARÍN1,5,6 Abstract. Lepanthes is one of the most species-rich genera of orchids in the Neotropics, with most of the species found in medium to high elevation forests and few species in lowlands. We describe and illustrate Lepanthes osaensis, a new species from the very wet lowland forest of Península de Osa, Costa Rica. It is similar to Lepanthes cuspidata but differs mostly in the vinous leaves; smaller sepals; the narrower, bilobed petals; and the smaller lip with triangular blades. Notes on its distribution, habitat, flowering, and conservation status, as well as discussion of a taxon with similar morphology, are provided. Keywords: Lepanthes cuspidata, orchid endemism, Pleurothallidinae taxonomy, twig epiphytes, very wet lowland forest Lepanthes Sw. is one of the most species-rich genera of Jiménez and Grayum, 2002; Bogarín and Pupulin, 2007; Pleurothallidinae (Orchidaceae), with over 1200 species Rakosy et al., 2013) and the continued long-term fieldwork from southern Mexico and the Antilles to Bolivia and by the second author (RA). A possible explanation is the northern Brazil (Pridgeon, 2005; Luer and Thoerle, 2012; marked seasonality between dry and wet seasons from Vieira-Uribe and Moreno, 2019; Bogarín et al., 2020). the north toward the central Pacific, contrasting with Lepanthes comprises plants with ramicauls enclosed by the prevailing wet conditions in the Caribbean throughout several infundibular sheaths, named “lepanthiform sheaths,” the year (Kohlmann et al., 2002). Connior Life Sciences, Northwest Arkansas Community College, Bentonville, AR 72712 Abstract: Between May 2013 and September 2015, two amphibian and eight reptilian species/ subspecies were collected from Atoka (n = 1) and McCurtain (n = 31) counties, Oklahoma, and examined for helminth parasites. Twelve helminths, including a monogenean, six digeneans, a cestode, three nematodes and two acanthocephalans was found to be infecting these hosts. We document nine new host and three new distributional records for these helminths. NATURAL HISTORY Taxonomy: There are three recognized subspecies of Fringed Myotis, with some researchers recognizing a fourth 1-3. Two subspecies occur in Wyoming with M. t. thysanodes found across most of the state. A unique subspecies, M. t. pahasapensis is found in the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming 3. Description: Identification of Fringed Myotis is possible in the field by experienced observers. Fringed Myotis is a medium-sized bat overall but large among Myotis species. Pelage color varies across the species’ range. Dorsal fur ranges from yellow-brown to dark olive-brown. Ventral fur is similar in coloration but paler. Appearance of M. t. pahasapensis in the Black Hills is unique. Dorsally, the subspecies is brown ochraceous buff and ventrally it is light ochraceous buff 4. The ears are long (16–20 mm) and very dark in color with a long tragus 3, 5. Wing and tail membranes are very dark and nearly opaque 5, 6. Females are significantly larger than males but are otherwise identical in appearance 3. Juveniles are indistinguishable from adults by around 21 days of age except for open epiphyseal closures 4. -
