What kind of is Portsmouth Abbey?

Portsmouth Abbey is a Benedictine abbey of the English Benedictine Congregation (EBC). The monastery and the school were founded by coming over from Britain in the 1920’s, though the monastic community here now is entirely American. The community retains its membership in the EBC, linking it to and schools in Britain and the United States.

What does it mean to be a “Benedictine ”?

Benedictines live in monasteries based on the “,” a fifth century document that sets up basic rules and advice for monastic life. The central pillars of the Rule and of Benedictine life are prayer, study, work, and community life. The Rule directs monks to gather for prayer seven times a day, to spend time in study and in work, and provides advice and guidance for a stable and nurturing community life.

How does monastic life affect student life?

The school incorporates the elements of prayer, study, work, and community life in many ways, directing its life according to its mission to “grow in knowledge and grace.” Whether through school Mass, house prayers, classes in Christian Doctrine, or other aspects of residential life, the school culture remains connected to the virtues passed on through the Benedictine monastic tradition.

Is my child required to attend Mass?

All boarding students are required to attend Sunday Mass, and day students are required to join them for Holy Days that fall on a class day. Students of other faiths may attend a different service on Sunday if there is a local available to them. Boarding students also attend in their dorms house daily assembly and prayers, as well as house Mass on a periodic basis.
