THE DAY AFTER MLK & BETTY SHABAZZ EDUCATION CENTER - APRIL 24th - MAY 1st, 2015

Harlem, NY - April 2, 2015 - We cordially invite you to relive our historical past, and honor the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X with the live performance art exhibit The Day After MLK at the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial & Education Center, April 24th – May 2nd, 2015.

The Day After MLK is a fictional story based on true events, beginning with the assassination of Malcolm X and continuing through the Civil Rights movement until the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The story centers around three newly converted orthodox Muslims who work closely with Malcolm X and his recently formed Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). We tap into the inner psyche and social constraints of these Muslim men as they endure a shift in their paradigm after the death of the major players in the movement. Through their misfortunes, we embark on an exploration of one’s beliefs and conclusively question the daunting elements of faith, religion and leadership.

Along with the theatrical production, the interactive art exhibition will live in the lobby of the Betty Shabazz Center and serve as a visual contribution to the stage play. The exhibition will force spectators to walk the path of their chosen leader (Malcolm or Martin) and experience their life decisions in a stimulating capacity, leading them to a common meeting point and raising the question “What if Malcolm and Martin’s movement merged into one?”

Our passion and devotion to advocacy will translate through our supplementary programming, and ultimately guiding our audience into the path of educational enlightenment. We seek to dilate your awareness of the Civil Rights era with eye-opening, jaw-dropping artistry. Your culture-cravings will be satisfied with intricate and ingenious content aimed to inspire the inner advocate in us all. On production nights, we will distribute a “Zine” – a self-produced publication containing topics too controversial or niche for mainstream media. Our goal of the ‘Zine is to circulate the message, as well as to provide useful information and resources related to the many layers and conversations associated with the performance piece.

Allow us to captivate your imagination with a sophisticated account of history’s most memorable moments. Join us as we attempt to implement change through a revolutionary movement of the arts, a modern-day Renaissance. We are offering our supporters the opportunity to contribute to an action that will transform our communities from the tainted components of America’s past. We are the authors of our own stories; we are the change we’d like to see in the world – We are The Day After MLK.
