NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Published 21 August 2013 ISSN 2153 733X A NEW SPECIES OF TRIPLINERVIAE GOLDENROD IN EASTERN CANADA (ASTERACEAE: ASTEREAE): SOLIDAGO BRENDIAE JOHN C. SEMPLE Department of Biology University of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario Canada N2L 3G1 [email protected] ABSTRACT A new species of Solidago is described from collections made in Maritime Canada. Fernald (1915, 1950) treated some of these plants as S. lepida var. elongata , which is native to far western North America. Comparison of these entire to sharply and coarsely serrate narrower leaved specimens that are sparsely hairy to glabrate with S. canadensis and the broader leaved and sometimes more hairy specimens of the S. lepida complex from Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island indicate that Fernald was correct in recognizing two closely related races native to the Canadian Maritimes that are similar to the mostly western S. lepida, but they are treated here as varieties of S. fallax. Fernald was incorrect in thinking that the narrower leaved race belonged in S. elongata . These three eastern taxa are diploid while the S. lepida infrequently occurring in the Maritimes is hexaploid. All four taxa are usually more stipitate- glandular and have more leafy inflorescences with ascending branches than in sometimes similar S. canadensis . The following new name and combinations are proposed: Solidago brendiae Semple, sp. nov. , Solidago fallax (Fernald) Semple, comb. et stat. nov. , and Solidago fallax var. molina (Fernald) Semple, comb. nov. Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2. -

SIMPLEX AARON FLODEN Herbarium TENN Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Tennessee Knoxville, Tennessee 37996 [email protected] ABSTRACT Solidago simplex subsp. randii var . racemosa is reconfirmed as a member of the Tennessee flora. Solidago arenicola is similarly confirmed although there are minor morphological differences between the Tennessee plants and typical plants from Alabama. Solidago arenicola in Tennessee is disjunct by about 300 kilometers from the type locality in Alabama and by about 370 kilometers from a reported occurrence in Kentucky, the only other known areas of distribution for the species. Solidago simplex and S. arenicola in Tennessee are distributed on two separate river systems of the Cumberland Plateau. KEYWORDS: Solidago arenicola , Solidago racemosa , Tennessee, Obed River, Big South Fork The recent floristic checklist of Tennessee (Chester et al. 2009) reported Solidago arenicola Keener & Kral based on material from two counties, Morgan and Scott, both of the Cumberland Plateau physiographic province where they grow along river-scoured rocky margins or on cobble bars. The present report of S. arenicola in Tennessee is due to the referral of the Tennessee populations to that species by Semple and Cook (2006) and their suggestion that the identity of the plants needs confirmation. Specimens at TENN were annotated to Solidago arenicola by Dwayne Estes based on a presumption of their identity fide Semple and Cook (2006) and their comparison to an isotype at TENN. -

Peirson, [email protected] Abstract Polyploidy is an important evolutionary mechanism in plants, and in some genera (e.g., Solidago in Asteraceae) it is particularly widespread and is hypothesized to have played a major role in diversification. Goldenrods are notorious for their ploidy variation, with roughly 14% and 32% of recognized North American species being polyploid or including multiple cytotypes, respectively. We used traditional chromosome counts and flow cytometry to examine cytogeographic patterns, biogeographic and evolutionary hypotheses, and species boundaries in S. subsect. Humiles. Chromosome numbers and DNA ploidy determinations are reported for 337 individuals, including 148 new reports. Cytotypes show significant geographic struc- turing. Solidago simplex and S. spathulata were uniformly diploid (2n = 18) in western North America, while cytogeographic patterns in eastern North America were regionally complex and included 2n, 4n, and 6n cytotypes. Cytotypes within S. simplex were ecogeographically segregated and mixed-ploidy populations were rare. Data from this study and additional biosystematic data indicate that cytotypes in S. simplex fulfill the requirements of multiple species concepts and should best be treated as distinct species. -
