However, the monophyly of these families have been contested and their interrelationships are poorly understood, and this constrains the pos- sibilities for interpreting adaptive tendencies in this very diverse group. In this study we present a higher-level phylogeny and classification for the tracheophone birds based on phylogenetic analyses of sequence data obtained from 32 ingroup taxa. Both mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and nuclear genes (c-myc, RAG-1, and myoglobin) have been sequenced, and more than 3000 bp were subjected to parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses. The phylogenetic signals in the mitochondrial and nuclear genes were compared and found to be very similar. The results from the analysis of the combined dataset (all genes, but with transitions at third codon positions in the cytochrome b excluded) partly corroborate previous phylogenetic hypotheses, but several novel arrangements were also suggested.

E-mail: [email protected] Resumen. – Comportamiento de forrajeo del tijeral (Leptasthenura aegithaloides) en matorral semiárido, centro-norte de Chile. – Hemos estudiado el comportamiento de forrajeo del tijeral (Leptas- thenura aegithaloides) en el matorral del centro-norte de Chile. Se trata de una especie de la familia Fur- nariidae que es insectívora recolectora desde perchas. Frecuenta los arbustos más dominantes y busca presas y alimentos principalmente en el follaje, grupos de flores, pequeñas ramas y masas de líquenes. Los arbustos preferidos incluyen a Porlieria y Baccharis. Se alimentan desde alturas cercanas al suelo hasta arbustos superiores a dos metros de altura. Se los encuentra más frecuentemente en parejas o en grupos pequeños, posiblemente familias, de tres a cinco aves. Las densidades promedio en el matorral (1,49 - 1,69 aves por hectárea) son mayores que las reportadas para otros lugares. Los tijerales en el matorral forman grupos de especies mixtas con facilidad, especialmente en el invierno Austral. Su estrategia de forrajeo y su comportamiento son similares a las del Mito sastrecillo de América del Norte (Psaltriparus minimus) y del Mito común (Aegithalos caudatus), ambos de la familia Aegithalidae, sugir- iendo estrategias ecológicas convergentes en ambientes estructuralmente similares. An overdose of stunning Andean scenery combined with marvelous shows of flowering plants enhanced our explorations of a never-ending array of different and exciting microhabitats for so many special and interesting Andean birds. We were rewarded with a fabulous trip record total of 341 bird species! Combining our two exciting Bolivia tours (Parts 1 and 2) gave us an all-time VENT record, an incredible grand total of 656 different bird species and 15 mammals!     A STUDY OF THE RUFOUS-FRONTED THORNBIRD AND ASSOCIATED BIRDS ALEXANDER F. SKUTCH ANGING from isolated trees in northern Venezuela are compact masses of H interlaced twigs so large and conspicuous that they can hardly escape the attention even of the traveler speeding along the excellent highways of that country. From a Venezuelan companion he may learn that the oblong masses of sticks are nests of the guaiti; but without patient watching he is not likely to see the retiring, wren-like builder of these incongruously large structures. The guaiti bears the English book-name of Rufous-fronted Thorn- bird (Phacellodomus rufifrons) and is a member of a large Neotropical family, the Furnariidae or ovenbirds, second to no other avian family in the world in the diversity of its nidification. The brief accounts that I had read of this remarkable bird, suggesting unusual social habits, whetted my desire to learn more about it. A grant from the Frank M. Chapman Memorial Fund of the American Museum of Natural History provided financial support for an extended visit to Venezuela. Cor- respondence with Paul Schwartz gave hope that we could find a suitable place to live while studying thornbirds. He met us at Maiquetia Airport soon after midnight on 12 March 1966 and, after showing us over the Parque National “Henri Pittier” (Ranch0 Grande), took us to “La Araguata.” This large cattle farm, belonging to the bird artist Walter Arp and his wife Elena, is situated, at an elevation around 1,400 feet, in a basin among low mountains near Pirapira, about 20 miles south of Valencia in the state of Carabobo.

Huertos de San Antonio, Surco, Lima, Peru ABSTRACT: High-resolution satellite imagery that is freely available on Google Earth provides a powerful tool for quantifying habitats that are small in extent and difficult to detect by medium- resolution Landsat imagery. Relictual Polylepis forests of the high Andes are of critical importance to several globally threatened bird species, but, despite growing international attention to Polylepis conservation, many gaps remain in our knowledge of its distribution. We examined high-resolution satellite imagery in Google Earth to search for new areas of Polylepis in south-central Peru that potentially support Polylepis-specialist bird species. In central Apurímac an extensive region of high- resolution satellite imagery contained 127 Polylepis fragments, totaling 683.15 ha of forest ranging from 4000 to 4750 m a.s.l. Subsequent fieldwork confirmed the presence of mature Polylepis forest and all 6 Polylepis-specialist bird species, 5 of which are considered globally threatened. Our find- ings (1) demonstrate the utility of Google Earth for applied conservation and (2) suggest improved prospects for the persistence of the Polylepis-associated avifauna.

    Tropical Birding Trip Report Southeast Brazil: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna, Oct-Nov 2016 SOUTHEAST BRAZIL: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna October 20th – November 8th, 2016 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report and photos by Nick Athanas Helmeted Woodpecker - one of our most memorable sightings of the tour It had been a couple of years since I last guided this tour, and I had forgotten how much fun it could be. We covered a lot of ground and visited a great series of parks, lodges, and reserves, racking up a respectable group list of 459 bird species seen as well as some nice mammals. There was a lot of rain in the area, but we had to consider ourselves fortunate that the rainiest days seemed to coincide with our long travel days, so it really didn’t cost us too much in the way of birds. My personal trip favorite sighting was our amazing and prolonged encounter with a rare Helmeted Woodpecker! Others of note included extreme close-ups of Spot-winged Wood-Quail, a surprise Sungrebe, multiple White-necked Hawks, Long-trained Nightjar, 31 species of antbirds, scope views of Variegated Antpitta, a point-blank Spotted Bamboowren, tons of colorful hummers and tanagers, TWO Maned Wolves at the same time, and Giant Anteater. Pseudasthenes, a new genus of ovenbird, is described for one of these groups. The four species included in the new genus, formerly placed in Asthenes, are P. humicola, P. patagonica, P. steinbachi, and P. cactorum. Most broad taxonomic groups have similar spatial diversity patterns, with greatest densities of species in wet, tropical environments. Although evidently correlated with climate, determining the causes of such diversity differences is complicated by myriad factors: many possible mechanisms exist to link climate and diversity, these mechanisms are not mutually exclusive, and they may overlap in the patterns they generate. Further, the importance of different mechanisms may vary between spatial scales. Generating uneven spatial diversity patterns in regions that are below equilibrium species richness requires either geometric or historical area effects, or regional differences in net diversification. Here, I investigate the global climate correlates of diversity in plants and vertebrates, and hypotheses that could link these correlates to net diversification processes, in particular through climate-linked patterns of molecular evolution. I first show strong climate–diversity relationships only emerge at large scales, and that the specific correlates of diversity differ between plants and animals. For plants, the strongest large-scale predictor of species richness is net primary productivity, which reflects the water–energy balance at large scales. For animals, temperature seasonality is the strongest large-scale predictor of diversity. Then, using two clades of New World passerine birds that together comprise 20% of global avian diversity, I investigate whether rates and patterns of molecular evolution can be linked to diversification processes that could cause spatial diversity patterns in birds.

Brumfield Museum of Natural Science and Department of Biological Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, USA HAND-WING INDEX AND FLIGHT PERFORMANCE IN NEOTROPICAL FOREST BIRDS We investigated the relationship between wing shape and flight distances determined during 'dispersal challenge' experiments conducted in Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal (Moore et al. 2008). During the experiments, birds were released from a boat at incremental distances from shore and the distance flown or the success or failure in reaching the coast was recorded. To investigated the relationship between the hand-wing index and flight distance in Neotropical birds we used data on mean distance flown from table 3 in ref. We estimated hand-wing indices for the 10 species reported in those experiments (Table S1) . Wing measurements were taken by SC for four males of each species at LSUMNS. The relationship between the hand-wing index and distance flown was evaluated statistically using phylogenetic generalized least-squares (PGLS, Freckleton et al. 2002). We generated a phylogeny for the species involved in the experiment or an appropriate surrogate using DNA sequences of the slow-evolving RAG 1 gene from GenBank (Table S2). A maximum likelihood ultrametric tree was generated in PAUP* (Swofford 2003) using a GTR+! model of nucleotide substitution rates, empirical nucleotide frequencies, and enforcing a molecular clock.
