Transfer to Palermo Group 1 (PawPaw, Nonna, Scott, Angelica, Evan, Jennifer, Ian, Jason, Jenna, Alice, Margo, Sofie, Virginia, Christian, Sarah, Kevin) arrives at Hotel La Battigia in Alcamo Marina. Everyone is arranging their own travel but recommend you arrive in Palermo early afternoon at the latest. Rosy is taking us to San Cipirello in the afternoon to meet the Ragusas. We may end up having dinner there, then drive to check into Hotel La Battigia in Alcamo Marina. Days 2 & 3. October 6 – 7. Free Day Nothing planned. The hotel is on the beach and has a pool and restaurant. Day 4. October 8. Bus tour with Rosy Sights to include Trapani, Erice, Sagesta. Day 5. October 9. Bus tour with Rosy Scopello, Monreale, Palermo. Day 6. October 10. Bus tour with Rosy We will check out of Hotel La Battigia. Our bus tour with Rosy includes Marsala, Selinunte, and final destination Agrigento. We check into B&B Bibirria for one night only. Day 7. October 11. Bus tour with Rosy Check out of B&B Bibirria. Sights include Piazza Armerina and final destination Syracusa. Check into Hotel Casa Mia for one night. We will say goodbye to Rosy for a few days. Day 8. October 12. Group 2 Arrives Check out Hotel Casa Mia. Group 1 may spend the morning in Syracusa but by afternoon we plan to be in Taormina and check into Hotel Lido Mediteranee. Group 2 (Debbie, Katharine, Becky, Bobby, Rachel, Matthew) arrives. If you are in Group 2 you should consider coming into Catania (it has an airport) and figure out how to get to the hotel. I will try to look into transportation, but you should plan to work something out. Taormina is close by so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Also, we will probably have a new tour guide/transportation agency. This is being worked out still – update to come. Day 9. October 13. Free Day Hotel is on a beach. Half-day tour of Taormina could be arranged for those interested so please speak up. Day 10. October 14. Mt Etna Check out of Hotel Lido Mediteranee, Tour Mt Etna. Spend day at mountain and check in Tenuta Don Ruggero (the farmhouse) near Castelbuono. Day 11. October 15. Free Day The farmhouse has a pool and lots of land to wander and a national park is near. Town Center is not far away. We will have a chef to cook for us. Day 12. October 16. Bus tour with Rosy Cefalu, other locations TBD. Also visit San Cipirello so those in Group 2 can meet the Ragusas. We may stay there for dinner. Day 13. October 17. Optional bus tour with Rosy, TBD. We could also invite the Ragusas to join us for dinner at the farmhouse. Day 14. October 18. Depart Sicily Check out of farmhouse. It’s Friday and many of us are probably headed home. We may all go back to Palermo as a group and start staging for departure and saying goodbye. Think about your plans and whether or not you are staying one last night – if so, let me know. Look at departing flights and get an idea for when departures back to mainland start. However, it is generally difficult to study such an effect while controlling for other specific com- ponents of habitat structure. Here, temperate fish assemblages were studied in artificial reefs in localities differing chiefly in connectivity among complex habitat patches. Total fish abundance and biomass were higher in localities with high habitat connectivity, while species evenness followed the opposite trend. In most cases, the assemblages can also be distinguished by composition and relative abundance of species, as well as multispecies variability. Species responses were related to specific ecological profiles. Small species and those with restricted mobility were associated with high habi- tat connectivity. By contrast, medium-sized, off-reef foragers and vagile species were associated with reef isolation. The abundance ratio between 2 representative families of both groups of species, labrids and sparids, confirmed this finding. The temporal consistency of the observed patterns was also studied. The assemblages differed between periods of the year in terms of species composition and relative abundances. Total fish abundance, number of species and evenness were higher during the cold period than the warm, due to the presence of transient species.

INTERPELLANZA (a risposta scritta urgente) N. - Notizie sullo stato di abbandono e degrado in cui versa il golfo di Castellammare e sugli eventuali provvedimenti da assumere nei confronti dei responsabili degli Uffici regionali preposti al controllo ed al rilascio delle relative Concessioni Demaniali. Al Presidente della Regione, all'Assessore per il territorio e l'ambiente premesso che: Le spiagge e i litorali, in ogni Paese civile, sono considerati giustamente il bene più prezioso di cui si dispone, data la loro utilità pubblica, sociale ed ecologica, per il turismo, la vacanza e il tempo libero di masse sempre più numerose, e quello di tutelarle e valorizzarle è un obiettivo prioritario. Questo atteggiamento mentale è il frutto di quella lungimiranza e capacità di previsione che mancano spesso in Sicilia, dove da anni assistiamo alla sistematica distruzione delle coste e della natura, cioè della stessa materia prima del turismo, a causa della mafia e dell'abusivismo (la Sicilia è la quarta regione per reati legati al ciclo del cemento e, solo nel 2012, sono state denunciate 727 persone ed effettuati 275 sequestri), a causa delle amministrazioni e di tutti gli organi che dovrebbero vigilare e non lo fanno, a causa delle discutibili concessioni e delle licenze rilasciate indiscriminatamente negli anni da Demanio, Sovrintendenze, Capitanerie ecc; la fascia demaniale del golfo di Castellammare, vasta e profonda insenatura naturale che va da Cinisi in provincia di Palermo a San Vito lo Capo in provincia di Trapani, comprende alcuni tra
